Subject: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: George Papavgeris Date: 08 Sep 07 - 03:08 PM What a lineup, eh? Well, except for myself, I form more of a blob than a line. But I will be thrice honoured to be sharing the stage with the effervescent John Spiers & Jon Boden, the legendary Sean Cannon of the Dubliners and the powerhouse of the Ian Giles/Graham Metcalfe/Ian Woods trio. Did I say thrice? No, more than that (four-ice? four eyes?), because the venue will be none other than the Holywell Music Room, the oldest concert hall in Europe (1742), where Haydn once used to try out his new material. And the whole thing is in support of the Chemotherapy & Radiotherapy Units of the Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals, so your £10 will go to a good cause. To recap: Wednesday 12th September at 7:30pm at the Holywell Music Room, Holywell Street Oxford, Oxon OX1 3SB UK a charity concert in support of the Chemotherapy & Radiotherapy Units of the Churchill and Radcliffe Hospitals with Sean Cannon John Spiers & Jon Boden Giles-Metcalfe-Woods George Papavgeris tickets £10 to book call 01865 743444 or Ian Woods on 07743 388047 |

Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: Leadfingers Date: 09 Sep 07 - 08:16 AM Thats a pretty good line up ! ANY of them would be Top of the Bill at most places !! |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: The Borchester Echo Date: 09 Sep 07 - 08:21 AM I'm not sure that Haydn ever left Austria, let alone ventured into Oxford but Halle-born Georg Friedrich Händel who lived most of his life in England certainly performed at the Holywell. This is the loveliest small venue I have ever visited (with the exception of a town square poised high above the northern Adriatic at Piran which doesn't really count) and is, as George says, the oldest concert hall in Europe. The acoustics are amazing and when the Witches did a voice workshop there, they wanted to take it home with them. And The Turf is just over the road and down an alley . |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: Pete_Standing Date: 09 Sep 07 - 06:10 PM This might be the last chance to ever see GMW too. The M is getting married and moving to the banks of Newfoundland. What a sad loss to Oxford and the UK, he is an inspirational singer and we shall miss the sessions with him, his wit and the barracking from the back of OFC. Good luck and best wishes to you Graham me boy! |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: George Papavgeris Date: 10 Sep 07 - 02:37 AM Thanks Diane, I never got a handle on those two names... I remember the Turf from my student days - a great pub with the best salad bar. The lettuce may have gone a bit limp by now. And not only. But I'll pop in for a swift half. |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: folk_radio_uk Date: 10 Sep 07 - 03:27 AM Thanks George. That really does look like a very worthwhile concert. I've added details to my site for any keen listeners in the Oxford area. |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: George Papavgeris Date: 11 Sep 07 - 02:43 AM I heard that someone from Caerphilly has booked tickets for the concert... Is anyone coming from the Watford area? Mary O'Connor, Herga's source singer, would appreciate a lift. |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: George Papavgeris Date: 11 Sep 07 - 08:08 AM Just spoke with Woodsie, and tickets are selling very well indeed, they may well sell out before tomorrow pm, so if you are hoping to turn up without booking in advance it might pay to reconsider... The order of appearance by the way is: GMW followed by Sean Cannon; break; then GP followed by Spiers/Boden; then Graham Metcalf to lead the assembled company in a couple of rousing chori to finish off. |

Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: George Papavgeris Date: 11 Sep 07 - 02:58 PM So I understand. To repeat my earlier query: Is anyone coming to the concert from Watford way? |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: Pete_Standing Date: 11 Sep 07 - 04:43 PM I'll tell you what, if it is a sell out, the chorus singing of about 200 people in that place at the end will be quite something! I've heard that the bearded one has had a serious hair cut too! Go go, go Graham go! |
Subject: RE: Spiers-Boden-Cannon-GMW-Papavgeris From: stallion Date: 11 Sep 07 - 07:24 PM Can't make it but tell Graham he was sorely missed at the York day of folk this year! |
