Men don't have them. Well...most men don't, I mean. Accordingly, they are obsessed with them. This has always been the case, but it is much more noticeable in cultures that feel women should have their breasts hidden from view when in public. In that case men's obsession with women's breasts becomes really extreme, and it can fund entire industries based upon photographing women's breasts from various angles.

Chongo thinks it's all quite hilarious. ;-) But then, he has his weak points too. He's obsessed with long legs on (human) women. That's because female chimps have quite short legs. Vive la difference!

I always understood that 'tit' is simply a different pronunciation of 'teat', and therefore quite a different thing to an entire breast. Of course, since that's the understanding of almost nobody else, I have to go along with majority opinion...

You are so right, Skarpi. "Breasts" is the one word that gives these bodily features the respect their owners deserve. The other words are either somewhat crude or just plain silly-sounding.   "Boob", for instance, used to be a common English term meaning "stupid person", "dummy" or "fool". Then a lot of people started using it for breasts instead...I have no idea why they did that. It sounds completely idiotic to me to say "boobs" when one means "breasts". It is, however, a symmetrical word which geometrically suggests a similar structure...

Maybe that has something to do with it in a subliminal way? Even the capital letter "B" by itself looks like a sort of visual representation of a pair of breasts, after all.

"Mammaries" is a sort of technical or scientific term, suggesting "the mother". Breasts are referred to in English language biology as "mammary glands", meaning that they serve the purpose of providing a mother's milk to infants.

All of this may have been lost on Hugh Hefner, I suppose... ;-)

Skarpi, just in case your English isn't up to it, 'tits' is one pronounciation of 'teats' which is another word for mammary glands.

When used properly, teats is a perfectly good word but it has been corrupted into 'tits' which is a rather derogatory word for (mostly) human, female breasts.

It's a rather coarse form of humour.

I have always been puzzled by the universal tendency to attach a pejorative connotation to the most intimate and valued parts of our anatomy, eg somebody might be referred to as a "total cunt", or a "absolute prick" or a "right tit" . The curse words in a culture indicate whatever people are most insecure about, to put it very succinctly.

"Tabernac", for instance is a curse word in Quebec, and it refers to the tabernacle, a religious term. That was a society where people were particularly insecure, I would assume, about doing something that offends the church! Just about ALL societies are really insecure about sex and about bodily wastes...hence the common swearwords based on those.

I'm not offended if some foolish person, for instance, calls me a "twat" or a "cunt" or a "cocksucker" though I imagine he expects I will be offended! (grin) It just strikes me as kind of funny, sort of ridiculous, because there is absolutely nothing offensive about those references, and they have no relevance to me.

Now if he were to call me a fool, a jerk, a dimwit, an idiot, a phony, a liar...that would maybe offend me. It has to do with something that actually matters, and it is a real criticism of my character rather than the other person merely expressing their own insecurities about sex in an unconscious way while trying to insult someone else.

OK you are grown up guys and can cope with personal abuse, to some extent, I can shrug that sort of abuse off too.

The use of expressions like "tits", "totty" etc however reduce women as a whole to mere sex objects.

Now I actually believe emotionally, intellectually and physically that sexual relationships between consenting adults are a "good thing" but although I enjoy cooking I might well object to being treated ONLY as a cook!

To treat a woman as a sex object is to treat her as less than human, certainly not a "partner" sexually or otherwise.
