Subject: BS: Advice on staying in London From: Herge Date: 13 Apr 08 - 08:26 AM Hi Will be in London on 22nd May to see Alison Krauss and Robert Plant and have a choice of hotels - can stay at a hotel beside Wembley (£80 really handy when leaving concert as dont have to travel) or I can stay at a much nicer hotel (The Hoxton Hotel 81 Great Eastern Street London EC2A 3HU) got a room for £30 in its room sale. My question really is about ther logistics of getting to the Hoxton from Wembley after the concert - is it convienient by Tube / bus or is a cab viable - and if so likley cost and do I have to pre-book? Any advice welcome. Herge |

Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: GUEST,patty o'dawes Date: 13 Apr 08 - 09:44 AM The Hoxton Hotel is about a 20 minute tube journey from Wembley and very straightforward. Go to Wembley Park tube and get the Metropolitan line southbound to Moorgate ( it'll take about 15 minutes and tubes every ten minutes or so later at night.) Then change to Northern line and go Nortbound for one stop to Old St, and there's your hotel. There'll be throngs of concert leavers going to Wembley Park tube after the gig, you won't get lost. Don't bother with a cab, they'll never find you amongst the thousands, they'll charge you an arm and a leg and the tube journey is good craic after a gig. Earwig your fellow travellers reviews of the night! Wembley is souless to stay, Hoxton is buzzing in a good way. |

Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: Manitas_at_home Date: 13 Apr 08 - 09:48 AM Liverpool St station may be closer to the hotel than Old St. It's also on the Metropolitan line so will save changing trains. |

Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: GUEST,patty o'dawes Date: 13 Apr 08 - 09:55 AM No, Old St is definitely nearer, about a five minute walk. I'd say Liverpool St is about a 20 minute walk, but definitely worth considering if you don't fancy changing tube - but you can't get lost down there, all colour coded and well signed. Although so long as it isn't pouring with the wet stuff and you avoide the City Rd it's quite an interesting walk along the back streets. |

Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: Phot Date: 13 Apr 08 - 01:22 PM Use the tube, its so easy, and to save money, get a travelcard. One to cover zones 1,2, and 3 would cost about £6.00, and you can use it on the bus, and the Docklands railway(DLR). Taxis cost a fortune, don't bother! Wassail! Chris |

Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: Liz the Squeak Date: 13 Apr 08 - 01:31 PM The thing most non-Londoners don't get about the Underground is that the map of the Tube bears no resemblance at all to the actual geography of the streets. What looks like the closest station may actually be further from your destination by foot than one not so obviously near. As it happens, Patty is correct in that Old St is the closer to Gt Eastern Street, but if the hotel is at the eastern end of the road, then Liverpool Street may be the nearer. Selby - if you ask three people the way to Aldgate station from Aldgate east station, you'll get five different answers, and I bet none of them will be go out of the station, turn left, cross the road and there you are. Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: Herga Kitty Date: 13 Apr 08 - 04:30 PM Some southbound Metropolitan line trains terminate at Baker Street, rather than going through to the city - but Wembley Park station has signs on the platform indicating the destinations of the next 4 trains and how many minutes away they are. Oh and for going to Wembley - normally there are some fast trains that don't stop between Finchley Road and Harrow, but I think on a concert night they'll all stop. Kitty |

Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: GUEST, Richard Bridge Date: 13 Apr 08 - 06:18 PM What time does the gig end? Allow half an hour for general milling about. Check the tubes are still running. Buy a tube mape, and A to Z and a bus map, on arrival in London. |

Subject: RE: BS: Advice on staying in London From: manitas_at_work Date: 14 Apr 08 - 05:28 AM Actually, having seen the map Patty is correct. During the day I'd probably walk from Moorgate (by the time you've transferred from the Met to the Northern line you could be halfway there) but you're probably better off going by train or changing to a bus late at night. |
