Subject: Lyr Add: COCAINE JANE (Sam Gill, Edward Riley)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 07 Feb 22 - 11:42 AM

From the sheet music at Baylor University:

COCAINE JANE [1] or CO-CAINE JANE [2]
Words by Sam Gill, music by Edward Riley, ©1925.

1. She landed in the city one ev’ning on a train,
Just a simple country lass; her name was Mary Jane.
No loving friend to greet her; you’ve heard the tale before:
A stranger there to meet her, she fell to rise no more.
It’s the same old story over again; now ev’rybody calls her Cocaine Jane.

CHORUS: Cocaine Jane, Cocaine Jane,
She lives in Cocaine Lane.
In a cocaine flat, with a cocaine cat,
She chases the cocaine rat.
Smiling with a cocaine grin,
She’s full of cocaine sin.
Snow has drifted on her brain.
Now ev’rybody calls her Cocaine Jane.

2. Now isn’t it a pity? In Cocaine Lane, they say
That she chases cocaine rats around the flat all day.
Her cocaine cat he helps her, for she has rats galore,
And stranger things torment her, so let us tell no more.
It’s the same old story over again; now ev’rybody calls her Cocaine Jane.

- - -
1 Title as given on the sheet music cover.
2 Title as given on the first page of the sheet music. Baylor University has it cataloged as CO-CAINE JANE, but a search for COCAINE JANE will find it.

Reviving this thread just to check a point in the DigiTrad:

Based on the discussion above it looks like what is in the DigiTrad as Cocaine Blues and Cocaine Blues 3 are (or at least are based on or related to) the Gary Davis version, although Cocaine Blues 3 is attributed to Luke Jordan at the top and bottom. What is in DigiTrad as Cocaine Blues (4) appears to be the real Luke Jordan version including the "furniture man", and is attributed to him at the bottom.   What is listed as Cocaine Blues 2 is pretty clearly the Little Sadie variant version (Red Arnall?).   Since, unless I am misreading the comments, it appears that the Cocaine 3 is NOT the Luke Jordan version - is there a way to delete the attribution to him on that listing in Digitrad?

Subject: Lyr Add: HENRY (John Dawson)
From: Lonesome EJ
Date: 11 Nov 08 - 01:02 AM

One of my favorite bluegrass stompers by John Marmaduke Dawson...

HENRY
As recorded by New Riders of the Purple Sage (1971)

Every year along about this time it all goes dry
Nothin' round for love or money that'll get you high
Henry got pissed off and said he'd run to Mexico
To see if he could come back holding twenty keys of gold

Now the road to Acapulco is very hard indeed
and it isn't any better if you haven't any weed
Henry's drivin' hard and straight on twisting mountain roads
fifty people waitin' back at home for Henry's load

CHO
And now he's rollin' down the mountain going fast, fast, fast
And if he blows it this one's gonna be his last
Down to Acapulco to turn the golden keys
Henry keep your brakes on for this corner if you please!

Henry got to Mexico and turned his truck around
He's talkin' with the man who has it growing from the ground
Henry tasted, he got wasted, couldn't even see
How he's gonna drive like that is not too clear to me

CHO

Sunday afternoon Tijuana is a lovely town
The bullfight bring the tourists and their money flowing down
Border guards are much too busy there at 5 o'clock
Henry's truckin' right on through, he hardly even stopped

CHO

The Wikipedia list has been deleted.

An oddity that I have occasionally wondered about is that tho there are many, many songs in praise (& dispraise) of alcohol, and a fair number in praise of nicotine, none of the other drugs seem to have attracted songwriters. In particular, all of the cocaine songs I have heard are against it, and what is more, against it from the point of view of a wretched user, rather than from that of a temperance crusader. Why do kaffeeklatschen never burst into song in praise of caffeine? Are there no pot-smokers' songs?

Caitrin-- I remember my friends being shocked and utterly disbelieving to hear that the Beatles' "Til There Was You" was actually an older song. Many of us didn't believe there was any real music written before 1960 either. It's one of the characteristics of youth.

Although actually I think it's one of the characteristics of people. We all get awfully provincial awfully fast and think that our decade/village/tribe/generation/country is really the *only* of those that exists, or at least matters.

By the way, spaw, I am a teenager, and I know considerably more about sixties music than drug culture, because the drug culture doesn't really interest me in the least. Which is why I know that you lifted "We were right about...We were wrong about drugs." from Steven Stills. Unless, of course, he lifted it from someone else, which is entirely possible. I think what's more of an issue than people only remembering drugs is people not remembering *anything*. Most of the teenagers I know don't think anyone wrote any music before 1980.

Ray,

The song you are looking for is almost certainly Luke Jordan's 'Cocaine Blues' recorded in 1927 which included within it a version of 'Furniture Man'. The white bluesman from West Virginia, Dick Justice, recorded his version, based fairly closely on Jordan's, in 1929. I don't know what Bromberg did with it, but it sounds like he rearranged verses if the 'furniture' bit comes first. Dixon & Godrich give no indication that Blind Blake ever recorded a song by that title. Jordan's version may be found on Various Artists 'The Roots of Rap' Yazoo CD 2018 and the Dick Justice version is on Williamson Brothers and Curry, Frank Hutchison and Dick Justice 'Old-time Music from West Virginia' Document DOCD 8004. It's fine song. I will try to transcribe it later - it is something I have been meaning to do in any case.

Cheers, Stewie.

With all the drug talk lately has anyone counted the number of messages on the "Favorite Beer" thread ? I'm tempted to start another thread with an on line meeting for those of us in recovery. This is an observation NOT a criticism. I enjoy the Mudcat one day at a time. And the last thing I would want to do is offend anyone by asking about recovery. But I enjoyed some of the drug observations in the previous messages especially WyoWomans . Live and let live as Bill W. would say. { Bill W is not a Mudcatter }

And Hoyt Axton died last week. I remember "The Pusher", it was the flip side of "Born To Be Wild" and I knew it was anti-drug the first time I listened to it. Of course there was another reason to be cautious about playing it, for those of us who take the third commandment (of the 10) seriously.

Wyo Woman, "The Pusher" was written by Hoyt Axton. He had a couple of older country chart hits ("When the Morning Comes" & "Bony Fingers"), but probably made more of a mark with his behind-the-scenes input, including songwriting, for other better-known artists (sorry, I forget who else right now). His mom co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel".

Subject: RE: Cocaine....

This reminds me of the brouhaha about Steppenwolf's "Goddamn the Pusher..." that got banned all over the country and got him attacked for "promoting" drug use, when any nincompoop could listen to the lyrics (which were written earlier by someone whose name I can't remember right now) would know that they were the strongest possible condemnation of the drug pusher.

And all these songs that allegedly "glorify" cocaine invariably refer to what a monster it is. It's a seductive drug, and I think that's the point.

BTW, I dont' associate cocaine with the Sixties at all. None of us had that kind of money back then. Nor even the Seventies. (Of course, I was busy reproducing during that time so mostly dealt with baby drool and Crayolas during that decade.) It was in the go-go Eighties that cocaine became such a part of the culture. (Yes, I tried it a couple of times and concluded that it wasn't worth risking one second of my life for nor one cent of my hard-earned shekels. However a friend who tried his first cocaine at the very same party and in the very same amount that I did, ended up utterly addicted and lost absolutely everything, including very nearly his life, to the damnable drug. So, a person's brain chemistry matters a great deal in this scenario, and is utterly unpredictable. You just don't know 'til you try it and then it's too late. -- this is, yes, the talk I gave my kids. Mommy not only inhaled, she snorted and she doesn't think it's a smart thing to do...)

But Spaw I completely agree with you that it's sad and inaccurate that the thing that is remembered about the Sixties -- which actually took place more in the Seventies -- is the drug use. For me, that's when the most fun stuff started to end. The first part of the Sixties were very playful, skippety doo-dah, let's let love transform the world, let's create art and music and have fun, let's make up a different way for human beans to be together. Then drugs started being a bigger and bigger part of it and the coolest stuff got squeezed out. BUT for those of us lucky enough to have experienced the playful part, what a fantastic, sweet time.

These are the same people who apparently think we would be better off A) if black people still knew their places B)if Women were still treated as chattle C)if Young people were sent blindly off to die in wars that preserve a power-structure and not an ideal D)if our world was turned into a polluted sewer in the name of profit E)if gay people were still stigmatized and bullied F) if God were in the classroom, but not Hemmingway or Dreiser.

Sure, we made some mistakes, but I think we live in a better, more free world because a lot of people went to the wall in those days to fight for it.

EZR...I don't think any of us are pushing for drugs but I was just remarking that at this point in time the primary memory is of the drug culture of the 60's and damn little else. This makes me think about the odd paradox where what was right is easily forgotten while what is wrong lasts and lasts. Kinda' reminds me of when the Hell's Angels were going around helping stranded motorists on California highways. They carried "business" cards which read:

"When we do right, no one remembers. When we do wrong, no one forgets."

Ah fuggitt anyhow......I'm just an aging radical who finally had to come to grips with only having influence over a wee tiny part of the world and can't change the whole thing.......the grand naivete of youth! Damn it was great!

I saw Dave Van Ronk, at the Bottom Line, May 29, and he sang "Cocaine". He sang the words posted here.

I play my version of his version of the song, in fingerstyle, that I learned back in the middle 60s. He says he learned it from Rev. Gary Davis.

Back in the 60s drugs were a more innocent thing, and there were fewer consequences, or so we thought. Nobody who sings this song today is advocating drug use, but the song is a lot of fun to sing and play, especially when I ham it up, ala Dave Van Ronk!

Thanx, EZR

Van Ronk's "Cocaine" - In the early sixties, Van Ronk did a pretty typical rendition of Cocaine with the verses we've all heard before. In 1983 or 1984, he released an album that had been recorded in a one night session in England. He had obviously come to see that cocaine was not something to be glamorized and included this version. The words are from my best recollection, but don't quote me.

Everytime me and my woman go uptown
Police come and they knock me down
(spoken) Yeah, I know it seems far-fetched

Yonder comes my baby, dressed in red
Says she's gonna get a shotgun and shoot me dead
(spoken)Ah, but it won't hurt a bit. My strength is the strength of 10, for I am pure

Yeah baby, come here quick
This old cocaine 'bout to make me sick
Cocaine, run all 'round my brain

I was walking down Beale Street, turning up Main
Lookin' for that gal that sells cocaine
(spoken)Kill 2 birds with one stone, as it were

Now if your woman says that you ain't treatin' her right
Just take a snort of coke and turn out the light
(spoken)Makes you feel like Superman - at least for the first five minutes - from there on in it's her problem

Come here baby, come here quick
This old cocaine 'bout to make me sick
Cocaine, run all 'round my brain

Went to bed last night singing a song
Woke up this morning and my nose was gone
(Spoken) Well I guess you can't have everything

There is no problem so great
That you can't run away from it,yeah

Cocaine is for horses, not for men
They tell me it will kill me but they won't say when
Cocaine, run all 'round my brain

Yeah pretty baby won't you come here quick
This old cocaine 'bout to make me sick
Cocaine, run all 'round my brain

kat...I'm not screwing myself up with this (BP average over the past week is 120 over 68) but it just kinda' disgusts me that every teen I talk to knows far more about the 60's drug culture than anything else. Once again the cure is within OUR children and grandchildren and what we teach THEM. Can't save all the world.........

And Leej, I too agree with the relative use of cocaine today...but I was thinking more of drugs in general I guess.

COCAINE by J. J. Cale

(The main riff is [E] [E] [D] [E], [E] [D] -- play that twice over each line of the verses)

If you wanna hang out you've got to take her out, cocaine.
If you wanna get down, down on the ground, cocaine.
CHO: She don't [E] lie, she don't [D] lie, she don't [C] lie [B] Cocaine!

If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues, cocaine.
When your day is done and you wanna run, cocaine. CHORUS

If your thing is gone and you wanna ride on, cocaine.
Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back, cocaine. CHORUS (long solo here?)
CHORUS

In fairness to the new guy, we don't know a lot about this song, I for one have never heard it. The reference to 'I want that cocaine' may in fact reflect an addicts need for it, it may go on to talk about the evils of cocaine and other drugs. Cocaine Blues certainly doesn't paint a pretty picture about the effects of cocaine. Unfortunately, I believe that J.J. Cale's 'Cocaine' which was covered by Eric Clapton was a knock against the drug, but many people thought it glorified it's use.

On a personal note, I have never tried the stuff only because everything that I've heard about it tells me that I would love it, and what do you do then?

Good point, LEJ.

I lived through the sixties, bummed around and had a blast, with all the standard acoutrements: outdoor concerts, be-ins, protests, etc. It was GREAT. And with the exception of two instances when somebody slipped LSD into my beverages, the strongest drug I ever used was pot -- and that was about 100 times weaker than the stuff out on the market today. I've never tried cocaine, or wanted to.

The sixties (and early 70's) were such a high in their own right (by virtue of all the exciting things we did back then, and the now-lost magic), that some of us considered chemical "suplements" unnecessary for sustaining that high.

If you want to look at the way drugs are used "badly," just look at these two categories: poverty and greed. Drug dealers do their best business in the poorest neighborhoods, and the priveleged rich think they're aboove the law and can use whatever gives them that extra rush they need for pushing themselves further ahead of everybody else.

And there's nothing "sixties" about any of that in my book.

Catspaw... maybe I'm wrong, but I associate cocaine with the upwardly-mobile Reagan disciples of the eighties far more than the counter-culture. It is certainly an addictive and destructive drug, much more so than the psychedelic concoctions that gave the 60's their atmosphere.

Hello,

Didn't Eric Clapton do a song called Cocaine? I don't think this is the hard rock song though. As you may have guessed, Steve, this may not be the place to ask about screaming rock. Sorry.

Oh 'Spaw, you watch that watching the news too much thing! The news, as I know you know, is meant to shock and focuses on the negative on purpose. In our perverse way, that is what the public gives the highest ratings to.

When those of us who grew up in the sixties remember to be positive I think we find many things continue of the good we knew was right. This is reflected in our children, who don't see colour when they look at a friend or other human being; it is reflected in the growth of enviromentally positive companies and products, along with education which tries to keep our species from annihilating our planet and ourselves; it is reflected in the good people all around the world who are closing the gaps through sharing of music, stories, and other ethnicities on the 'Net and otherwise.

It is never the leaders of the world who really change it. It is the people, one by one. The grassroots organisations which put on culture fests to open people's minds to diversity; to educate; the teacher who encourages her students to explore beyond their own backyard; the teenager who DOES go volunteer in a nursing home, and as they did here, videotape oral histories of the African-American community of Casper.

I make it a habit to never watch television news, unless it is on PBS or BBC, where it is less biased and less sensational. I usually listen to news on NPR. I read about it in the paper. BUT, I never, ever, have any news on when I am eating a meal and I never, ever spend more than one hour on any news, unless, of course, it directly effects me or my loved ones.

I don't think this is a pollyanna attitude. I just think we can fill our hearts ('Spaw, are you listening?) and minds with too much of the negative crap and that that is very detrimental not only to us and our physical and mental health, but also it helps to perpetuate the race or common consciousness of negativity and apathy. (I am NOT calling anyone on here apathetic!)

So, 'Spaw, preserve the hope and joy your music brings you by turning off the damn news once in awhile and think on the beauty that surrounds you. The sixties never left the world; they are just maturing and becoming more of the ordinary.

I don't think I've ever seen a thread that had so many good answers........Ronn's is the most succinct and Barry, knowing your history, NO ONE could have stated it better. Many thanks to you my friend.

Cocaine and many others have been around a long time, but now they seem more and more attached to the sixties. It depresses me to realize that all the other things related to that time period are in many ways lost, but drugs are the "memory of choice" for many today...one helluva' legacy ain't it? We were right about poverty, about racism, about other civil rights, about the war (and other wars too), but we were wrong about drugs. Most of us admit that freely and openly, but more and more as I watch Kosovo, race and hate crimes, the expanding social gap, Littleton and the rest of the news, I realize that we leave very little and what is left is the worst. Can't give up though...but it is disheartening.

Then there's always "Cocaine", by among others, Gary Davis. "...Cocaine, all around my brain...."
