To celebrate Rick's life and songs we'll have a gala evening of music with musicians who were his peers and friends and who each contributed to the enrichment of Rick's life. They will sing Rick's beautiful songs, sing songs for him and share treasured memories. Heather Fielding, Rick's wife, has carried on hosting his weekly "Acoustic Workshop" radio show and will be hosting the evening along with "Back To The Sugar Camp" radio host Steve Fruitman. A little bio info on Rick: Originally a native of Montréal, Quebec, Rick was smitten by folk and blues music as a teenager.. He later moved to Toronto and in a career that spanned over thirty years toured extensively throughout Canada, Great Britain and the United States. He recorded albums for Folk Legacy and Borealis. and happily managed to finish his latest album "Acoustic Workshop" while struggling with his illness. Apart from touring and playing his own music Rick taught acoustic techniques on guitar, banjo, mandolin and dulcimer, ran workshops on songwriting and professional development for musicians, did custom leather work, and hosted the radio show Acoustic Workshop on CIUT-FM 89.5. Above all Rick was a giving person as a performer, teacher and friend. He is missed deeply by all who knew him. "I'm gonna sing with the angels When my time comes around This earth is just rehearsal For when I'm heaven bound I'll be well prepared to take my place With harmony and rhyme And sing with the angels when it's time" Rick Fielding 1944 - 2004 For more info, visit: www.borealisrecords.com http://www.thebanjomute.com/rickfielding/index.html |
Subject: RE: Rick Fielding tribute, March 21, Toronto From: Big Mick Date: 11 Feb 09 - 12:58 PM Having performed on the same stage with a number of these performers, I can tell you it will be an evening to remember. I am very much looking forward to performing the first song of Rick's that I ever learned, and one which inspires me to this day, "Voices of Struggle". It has become a requested one in my repertoire, and I sang it at both of the benefits for Utah Phillips. I am looking so forward to being with my friends in Toronto, once again. It has been far too long. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding tribute, March 21, Toronto From: Jeri Date: 26 Feb 09 - 08:51 AM This one faded fast. I hope folks can get to this. I really wish I could, but I have a job I've committed to which starts the week before, and I really need the work. I hope to at least hear about this. It would be really great if CIUT could broadcast all or part of this, either live or recorded, but I know it would be difficult. Just go and enjoy remembering a guy who changed more than a few lives. |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding tribute, March 21, Toronto From: Dave Swan Date: 02 Mar 09 - 11:59 PM It'll be a hell of a night and I'd love to be there. Dammit, if I could find a way to be there, I would. I remember with great affection the day that we traveled from the Wayland, Michigan offices of Lane, Fielding, Patterson and Swan, Layabouts for Hire to the Toronto office, then made music for about 2 1/2 hours and returned to the shores of Gun Lake. Good times. All best to everyone going there to remember Rick, and to everyone here who remembers a generous, funny, talented man. We're the better for having known him. D |

It's going to be quite a special event, the musicians have all been talking to each other and I think we may be in for some surprises. We haven't worked out the details yet but we do want to record the evening and send it out into the wider world. I'll let you know more as I know more. One thing I am happy to announce is that the money raised from this concert will be going to help other artists. The proceeds will be donated to the Artists Health Centre which helps artists in all fields deal with the special problems caused by practising their art. Heather |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding tribute, March 21, Toronto From: balladeer Date: 18 Mar 09 - 12:28 PM Apologies for the duplication! (That's what can happen when you post whilst half asleep.) Please note there were some changes in personnel after the first press release. 1) Matt Watroba will be joining the company. 2)Instead of Bill and Sue's duo, you will be entertained by the equally fabulous long-time duo of Bill Garrett and Curly Boy Stubbs, after which, Curly Boy will quickly morph into his alter ego of Paul Mills and do a turn with Crabtree&Mills. I'm looking forward so much to Saturday night. Preparing for it has meant spending time with Rick's spirit in Memory Lane, and that has made the past little while quite emotional. When he was still with us in the flesh, Rick and I used to spend lots of time in Memory Lane together, swapping sordid tales of our shared past in the Toronto version of the sixties folk revival. Being in the room and on the stage with Heather and so many who were Rick's friends, students, jamming buddies, colleagues (and for me, especially the guys who were in his wonderful Hugh's Room band during that fabulous weekly concert series) - let's just say I'm going to be struggling to maintain my composure. See you there. Joanne Crabtree |

Subject: RE: Rick Fielding tribute, March 21, Toronto From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 21 Mar 09 - 08:28 AM Heather, I still treasure the memory of being on stage with Rick at Mystic Seaport festival, and still regret that his tour of the UK never came off. Subject: RE: Rick Fielding tribute, March 21, Toronto From: GUEST,Eve G Date: 22 Mar 09 - 02:55 PM Hi all, (It's been so long since I checked into Mudcat that I've forgotten my Mudcat name and password! Bad, bad, bad! Does anyone know how I retrieve them?) I wanted to just say hi to you all and tell you that last night's concert was amazing. It was so packed they had to turn a bunch of people away (people started lining up at 6:30 pm!). The music was fantastic, the stories were funny and touching, and looking around the room you could see what a tremendous impact Rick had on the folk scene in Toronto and far beyond. The concert went well past midnight, but most of the crowd stuck around until the very end. I think Rick would have enjoyed it! |
