Hey:

I've done this song for many, many years, but I'm afraid I can't help you with the chords. Like alot of songs I've learned over my lifetime, I heard the chords in my head and then it was simply a matter of figuring out where to put my fingers to get them to come out of my guitar. Some of them, I have no idea what they're called.

When I first started playing guitar, I wanted to be a jazz guitarist. I particularly loved Little Girl Blue and wanted to work it out on guitar. I came up with a decent version of the song, playing all the way up the neck, when I only knew five or six chords in the first position. All the rest of the chords, working my way up the neck were ones I figured out from my head. Later, Someone told me I was playing stuff like augmented seventh chords and many other names I'd never heard of and have since forgotten.

Some day I'll learn how to play guitar right.

Jerry

It's a great song, and Jimmy has a full orchestra backing him.

Thanks so much for that Gene. As I said earlier I thought I had it all worked out but realise now I left a couple of chords out and had one completely wrong! Sincere thanks mate as I know it must have taken you some time to do all that. Cheers, Paul.

From Jimmy Rodgers Song Folio #2

Note. Fortunately the arranger left off all the chords from H to Z!

Sweet Mama Hurry Home Or I'll Be Gone
Words & Music by Jack Neville

[F] I've been so [C7+] blue -- [F] And lonesome [C7+] too

[F] Ever since you went away [F7]

My [Bb] poor heart yearns for you both night and day [F] [Dm] [Gm] [C7]

[C7] Since you're gone -- the stars don't seem to shine

[G#] You [F] are [G#] al- [F] ways on my mind

[G7] I'm so unhappy - for I want just [C7] you

Chorus

[C+7] But [F] there'll come a time

[F] you'll miss me [G7] and you'll be blue

[C7] There'll come a time

You'll want me [F] no one [F#] else will [C7] do

[Sweet [G7] Ma - [C7] ma)

Your [F] heart will long -- for my lov-[D7]-ing [Gm]

Then you'll see that you were [Gm] wrong

And I [Bb] know you will sigh [Bbm]

And maybe some-[F] times cry [D7]

But [Gm] then I'll [C7] be long gone [F](Sweet [D7] Ma-ma)

[Gm] Hurry home or [C7] I'll be gone [F]

Hurry [F] home or [C7] I'll be [F] gone [Bb] [Bbm] [F]

Next Verse

You won my heart - right from the start

I gave all my love to you

I never dreamed that you could be untrue

You have ways of loving all your own

That's what made me leave my happy home

Bbut now your're gone and I'm left all alone

Chorus

Note. THIS WAS A BOOGER TO AFFIX THE CHORDS...

Hi again and thanks again Greycap... have it okay now and it sounds really good. Have also worked it out in E with capo on the first in the same key (F) as Jimmie Rodgers track. It's a smashing little song and I love it.

Hi Greycap ... confused a little. I can hold down the fourth string with the first finger but not the second finger(do you mean a G-shape chord)? It sounds really good. The Dm is one I missed too. Many thanks but can you clear up the fingering issue for me?
Cheers, Paul

Hi, Gang,
Woke up this morning with the learnin' Jimmie Rodgers song Blues....
Here we go, D-28 in hand:
JR plays it in the key of F so.....first:
Up I went to C shapes on the 5th. fret with the trusty Shubb capo.
The jazz intro is as follows: F/C/A/D/G/C/...then
" I've been so /blue, and lonesome /too...."
Chord of C and then the single note of D# for 'blue' & 'too'( 4th. string at first fret with the second finger, while still chording the C, this lets you back to the tonic good 'n' quick.)
There seems to be a swift Dm on the 'wrong'in the first chorus & 'Oh, Baby'in the second chorus.
Leastways, that's how I hear it and would play it.
Still want all the words and other chords? Just say.
I'm going for breakfast, best wishes to you both in Oz & Missouri!!

I think it might simply be an F7.. this has the Eb in it of course and it sounds better than the others. A G#7 is in the song but much later on and only once. I hope you track the song down Melissa as it is a little beauty!! Cheers for now, Paul

You've got me curious about this song now.
I'll be glad to see Greycap's chords too..and sniff around to see if I have a copy of the song so I can hear it.

Thanks Melissa.. have just about worked it out apart from the first line. The actual note is an Eb and I have tried that chord as well as B and G# as well as a couple of minors but none seem right. I tried to post my effort here but the chords and words didn't line up properly. I'll see what Greycap comes up with tomorrow. What part of the world are you in by the way??

did you try a Dm, Paul?
(when you're in C)

I don't seem to be familiar with the song we're talking about, but Jimmie Rodgers does have 2m for the next chord sometimes.

Thanks for your help Greycap.. I have now worked most of it out with C shapes and it is a delightful song to sing and pick in ragtime style adding all the ninths, sixes and sevenths etc to the many chord changes as you go along. It is just the first line that worries me .. I go from C to G# and it does not sound right .. the rest is okay. Interested in seeing what you come up with!!
Cheers, Paul

Hi, Nager, G'Day,
I just created a 'single' to get the lyrics so that's all done.
I just daren't start on the guitar chords in 'E' right now, at this time of night, otherwise another Sweet Mama will get upset 'cos she's getting her beauty sleep.....
So, I'll do it first thing in the morning, here in UK, OK? I won't be going out 'cos it's raining really heavy.
I'll be playing four frets up, in 'C' shapes to get the E stuff, unless you say otherwise.
I'm off to my rack now and pile up the ZZZZ's.
Good night

Hi Greycap, I have the audio track via a CD and the words etc and have worked out most of the chords (in E) but there's a couple of odd things that I just can't get right... so infuriating, must be old age or something as I usually work things out by ear quite well!! I am in Australia so just a simple listing of chords here on Mudcat might be easier and also that way others can use it too if they wish. I have found the Jimmie Rodgers songbook via Amazon but this song is not in it... Sincere thanks for your help.

I'm listening to it now - give me about 24 hours, 'cos it's about one in the morning with me. What's your location? I can send you the track, chords etc by snailmail, if you want.

Wow that was quick response Melissa!
No, the song I want is by Jimmie Rodgers and also covered by Rex Griffin and Leon Redbone to name just two.
It starts off "I've been so blue, and lonesome too, ever since you went away..."
