Subject: Allan Taylor Song Lyrics & Chords
From: GUEST,Guest Bagger

Dropped a line last week about the lyrics and chords of two Allan Taylor Songs but only got one reply from Jim Dixon - thanks Jim - which didn't come up with the answers I was looking for.

The songs titles I only know from listening to someone singing the song in a pub at a recent festival and so may go by another name, but the following line was certainly prevelent in the chorus of each song:-

Come Home Safely To Me
&
I'm Going Home Again

Any help would be much appreciated

Come home safely to me is on his faded light CD

If you want any help, I am sure Jimmy and Val AKA JIVA could help you as they do Allan's myspace account and they know all his songs and sing them http://www.myspace.com/allantaylorsongwriter

Thanks for the replies on this one but aback Home To You isn't one of the songs that I'm looking for.

I've checked through Allan Taylor's Discography, I've already got a couple of his CD's, but there are no song titles as I have laid out in my original E mail, I can only assume that either they go by a different title to the main line in the chorus or they are not his songs after all.

Thanks for the tip about Bothy Folk Club, LesB, but that's some distance from me to travel over on the off chance that he might be there that night.

I might ask my daughter to see what she can do on Myspace, thanks for the tip there Villan.

I'll buy the CD with Back Home To You as I think that's a good song, regardless. Sometimes the simplest of songs are the best.

Thanks, but, any more suggestions?

You will get "Come Home Safely to Me from Allans 1995 'Faded Light' CD... but not sure where it is available from. Beautiful song... cover done by 'Scolds Bridle' which is also good.
Best wishes, Mike.

Almost sent a message saying, nope, can't find Allan Taylor's "Faded Light" CD on his web site, when I suuddenly realised that I had not scrolled over far enough to see three different page buttons to view all of his CD's. Hasn't he been busy!

Orders will be placed for Faded Light and Leaving At Dawn, but first, one more try for "I'm going Home Again". Anyone out there heard of it? Come on Catters, down let me down.

Oh, and, does anyone know the chords for any of the above? Allan Taylor's web site says that his book is out of print.

Cheers me dears

If you give it half an hour or so, somebody will come on and help you and I would be very surprised if your questions can't be answered.

Hi

The song 'Come Home Safely To Me' is indeed on the Faded Light album, released 1995. Unfortunately this album isn't currently available, but you may get lucky on eBay or Amazon.

The words and chords are in Allan's songbook volume 1 which is available to buy from his website Orders page at
www.allantaylor.com/orders

We look after that page for Allan and handle all online orders on his behalf. Albums, songbook volume 1 and a Blu-Raydisc/DVD shown on this page can be purchased - we're working on songbook volume 2 (which should be out by mid/end October) and there's a second Blu-Ray disc/DVD due out by the end of the year.

'I'm Going Home' is a new song, not yet recorded on an album.

Hope this helps - any further queries, just shout.

Many thanks Jimmy & Val.

I'll swear the last time I looked on his site it said the book was out of print, but I stand corrected.

How the hell did I hear "I'm Going Home Again" if it's not even recorded yet?

I've checked on Amazon and Faded Light is not shown. I'll have to keep on checking.

Cheers Me Dears!

GS - don't you also have 'Come Home Safely To Me' (with Allan's permission) on a CD by someone local whom you know very well, a fellow-member GFC and of Mudcat? If you don't have the CD, I know someone who would be very happy to sell you one! :-) :-)

And I think the second song Guest-Baggers looking for is one I used to do and which Travelling Audiences' mate Ian also does, the title of which completely eludes me now, but it starts:-

I came in from Germany, drove all through the night
I had to get to Amsterdam to make the early flight
Just an hour from England, de dah de dah de dah.....etc.

Guest-Bagger, did you by any chance hear these two songs at the Gainsborough Folk Festival a couple of weeks ago?

Eureka! It's called 'Standing At The Door', and it's on the 'Out of Time' CD. Lovely low 'C' tuning - CGCGCE.

Can anyone give me the chords to 'Roll On The Day'? The basic chords I'm using are inadequate & I don't have enough music knowledge to sort them out. It's driving me potty at the moment, so believe me I would be very grateful.

1,4 and 5 of whatever key you do it in.
So....if you're in G, it would be

G                C/G G          D      G    D
As the dawn comes creeping, roll on the day.

G                C/G G          D      G
Another night not sleeping, roll on the day.

D          G C/G       G      D
Roll on the morning, roll on the day,

G                  C/G    G
I hear the old man softly praying,

G    D      G
Roll on the day.

Buggerbuggerbugger. Damn and blast HTML!

Couldn't make the chords line up with the words....they're in the right order, just move them backwards or forwards a bit till they fit the tune.

The alternative would be to by Allan's songbook if it's still in print. I'm sure the artiste would be grateful.

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 20 Mar 15 - 05:10 PM

I assume this is what you wanted, Guest?

There is a video of a live performance by Allan Taylor at YouTube, but I made my transcription from Spotify.

CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT
As performed by Allan Taylor & Phil Cunningham on "Aly Bain & Friends" (1989)

Looking out at the city through my window pane,
Streets are shining in the falling rain.
Taxis cruise the late-night bars,
Watching the taillights of going-home cars,
Watching the taillights of going-home cars.

TV's shut down and the radio plays
Old time music from younger days.
Phone up a DJ, ask him to play a tune
For one of a thousand in love with the moon,
For one of a thousand in love with the moon.

CHORUS: Count down the miles and you run out of time.
The chimes at midnight that blurred in the wine,
The melody rolls into one long song,
Round and around, on and on,
Round and around, on and on
Again.

But wasn't it good when the music played,
When the people sang to the songs you made?
Wasn't it good? Didn't it make you grin
When Dougie came in on the violin,
When Dougie came in on the violin?

So you're thinking it over through the night,
Watching the morning coming on light,
No regrets, no cause to complain.
You know you'd do it all over again.
You know you'd do it all over again.

CHORUS
