Subject: REQ: The Rose and the Briar From: Wolfgang Hell Date: 11 Oct 98 - 10:24 AM I'd like to find the lyrics to Allan Taylor's "The rose and the briar". Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: REQ: The Rose and the Briar From: skw@ Date: 11 Oct 98 - 10:51 AM Wolfgang, do you live anywhere near Hamburg? Allan Taylor is appearing there at the 'Onion' (lovely pub, lovely owner!), Eggerstedtstr. 39, this very night (Sunday, 11 Oct). However, I only remember a trad. song with a last line 'The red rose and the briar'. That's not what you're after? - Susanne |
Subject: RE: REQ: The Rose and the Briar From: Wolfgang Date: 11 Oct 98 - 11:02 AM Susanne, I'm not living near enough to Hamburg (Münster, actually) to be able to see him life tonight. If he has a songbook, I'd like to know whether this song's in there. I might buy it then. Yes, this line also can be found in traditional songs, but I'm after Allan's song with this title. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Teasle Date: 28 Mar 00 - 06:29 PM Tim! You're and Allan Taylor fan!! Great! Rose and the Briar - a beautiful song - a brilliant album. Have you ever seen him live? I wish... What is he doing these days, do you know? I sing a couple of his songs .. Good to See You and Lady Take Your Time. Interesting this Mudcat thing eh?? The more you know, the more you want to know. Time for sleep.. nite, nite, Teasle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Susanne (skw) Date: 28 Mar 00 - 06:45 PM Teasle, where do you live? Seems he's travelling Germany most of the time. I've seen him quite a few times in recent years, and he usually is at Tonder Folk Festival (last weeekend in August), although he isn't on this year's official list. - Susanne |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Teasle Date: 29 Mar 00 - 10:46 AM Hi Susanne, I live in the UK at present - although I am moving back to Australia at the end of the year. Pardon my ignorance, but where is Tonder? Teasle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Tim Salt Date: 29 Mar 00 - 04:27 PM Hi Teasle I used to see him pretty regularly when I lived near Hull, in Beverley. At that time he was based around Leeds and so was a frequent guest at a lot of the clubs. I'd not sung any of his songs for years and then recently found some of his tapes and remembered just how good some of his stuff was. I've started performing "Rose and the Briar" and "Roll on the Day" again - brilliant songs. You are clearly someone with very good taste! - Allan Taylor and Vin Garbutt - now theres a contrast - but both huge talents. Tim |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Teasle Date: 29 Mar 00 - 04:45 PM Tim! Methinks we might have a few songs in common! I used to sing Roll on The Day too! (A lovely tune - quite depressing lyrics eh). Vin Garbutt is SUCH l lovely bloke - and he just makes me laugh every time he opens his mouth - and when he sings, well, he just bowls me over with the power of his voice. Where are you? Teasle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: John Wood Date: 29 Mar 00 - 08:56 PM I know he's booked for the SKAGEN(DENMARK) FESTIVAL last weekend in june. Greetings John. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: GUEST,mandsd@yahoo.com Date: 30 Mar 00 - 02:35 AM Allan Taylor is on at the Trinity Arts Centre in Gainsborough on Wednesday 6th September. Sue Dewsbury ( Gainsborough Folk Club ) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Tim Salt Date: 30 Mar 00 - 12:24 PM Hi Teasle Me thinks you may be right!! Depressing lyrics for certain and yet audiences pick up the chorus quickly and give it plenty of welly. I'm in Sidmouth - and very pleased about that too! Tim |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Teasle Date: 30 Mar 00 - 01:18 PM Sidmouth eb? Brilliant! I am thinking of coming down for the festival this year ... I have heard that the down side of Sidmouth is that the Festival is spread out - very disparate. What do you think? Normally during that particular week I would head back to Alderney, where I was born - its the island's festival week that week too... Still undecided. Help! Cheers, Teasle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Tim Salt Date: 30 Mar 00 - 02:32 PM Go on - try something different. Lots of people say that Sidmouth is one of the best festivals, and I'd agree with them. It is a bit spread out, but then again Sidmouth's not such a big place so getting from place to place is easy. There must be a few Mudcatters coming down for the festival - it would be good if some sort of meeting could be arranged. There's another thread around on the subject here Tim |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Teasle Date: 30 Mar 00 - 02:44 PM I'll give it a bit more serious thought Tim. It would be good to meet up with a few Mudcatters .. perhaps, as you're a 'local' you could take the lead on that? Back to depressing lyrics - another song similar in 'feeling' to R and the B is Desparate Man by Dougie McClean .... good driving chorus - lyrics to die by!! Why are we attracted to songs like that?? Teasle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: GUEST,phil Date: 30 Mar 00 - 03:44 PM Al Taylor has his own home page at allantaylor.com |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose & The Briar From: Susanne (skw) Date: 30 Mar 00 - 04:48 PM Teasle, Tonder is in Denmark, and you can learn more about the Tonder Festival, now into its 26th year, at http://www.tf.dk/ (cut & paste, please). Probably out of your way, but well worth a visit if you get the chance. - Susanne |
