Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 24 Sep 10 - 12:10 PM First of all the gun nut neighbor is gone, gone, gone... Yup, seems that the house below us was owned by his ma-in-law and he done scred his wife so bad with all that shootin' that she left and mama come down an threw his butt outta her house and he ain't been back... Secondly, which LP is that Ol'ster??? Well, my tree guy just left... Heck, he rigged this up and that up and the danged tree still went where it wanted to go and destroyed 40 feet of my deer fence so while he was cuttin' it up I was replacin' that section of fence... I mean, I could have done exactly what he ended up doin'... I got experience in fellin' trees the wrong way... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 24 Sep 10 - 04:20 PM Well, Capt'n... GfinS is a tad on the peeved side these days with me but she'll get over it... Or won't... Nothin' I can do about it... Last week she said 'cuase I don't read music that the blues I play is "stupid noise"??? Yeah, Eb... Never a dull moment... If I had one I'd find somethin' to un-dull it... Purdy uneventfull here... We've spent the last 3 weeks de-Bob 'n de-P-Vinin' it... Speakin' of dull... . No toys...No magazines... No junk... No clutter... In other words it's like house-lite... Even the gardens are borin'... No hoses to trip over... No tools in then yard to find with the mower... No bags of mulch here and there or pots of this or that waiting to get planted... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 Sep 10 - 04:42 PM "Even the gardens are borin" You know, Bobert, that's an insightful thing to say. This time of year, the garden seems to pause and catch a breath. No more tomatoes or roses, trees look tired. The weather is pleasant, but it seems like everything wants to slow down and rest a bit before winter comes. Unless, of course, one is a migrating bird. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 24 Sep 10 - 05:01 PM Well, we're usually into our fall veggie garden but with all the work we've been doin' trying to get the farm showable the fall garden hasn't happened... We are getting 5 pounds ot tomatoes everyday and another pound or so or okra... But, yeah, all in all, things are a little tired... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: PoppaGator Date: 24 Sep 10 - 05:16 PM Bobert, I wasn't scared during my little pilgrimage to your mountain there ~ I was just nervous about getting back on the road, jiggling my leg and glancing back and forth at my wristwatch, er, I mean cellphone. I really regret that we didn't have more time, or at least that I couldn't have spent my little time with you two in a more relaxed manner. By the way ~ are we all familiar with the phrase "buying the farm" as an expression meaning to be killed? Get shot while serving the Army (US Army, anyway) and your GI insurance will allow your folks to pay off the mortgage on the family homestead. I've been wondering if the expression were commonly known throughout the English-speaking world, or just to us 'Murcans ~ when I saw the thread title the other day, that's the first thing I thought... |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 24 Sep 10 - 06:12 PM LOL, Jen... Actually, me and the tree guy get along fine... We both looked it over when he got here and kinda agreed on what we goin' to try to do... The only reason I ever call him is 'cause he's young and strong and straps on that belt and cleats and climbs trees like it was nuthin'... All with a chainsaw tied to his belt... But glad you liked the pics... Hoefully we'll get the agent to pur some garden pics up??? B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: frogprince Date: 24 Sep 10 - 09:38 PM I've been accustomed to the expression "buying the farm" for dying all my life. As it happened, I think that early in life I heard a semi-literal usage for it a number of times, referring to some small plane pilot killed in a rural crash - sort of "claiming" a patch of farm land by staking it out with his cadaver. Poppagator's explanation of the origin of the expression rings truer for me, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 24 Sep 10 - 09:52 PM Well, Dougie... Here's the deal... If I "convey" with the farm then I get to stay where I am very content: a Virginny mountain holler... But the downside??? Ahhhh, no P-Vine 'cause this ol' gal is like, ahhhh, out-a-here!!! Yesterday!!! So what's a wuss to do??? I mean, this ain't rocket surgery... So it's off to Carolina witha banjo on my knee... But I swear on my grandmother's Bible that I will never, ever root for no Carolina team!!! I don't care if it's, ahhhhh, the North Carolina Olympic Tiddley Winks Team... No rootin'... Period!!! Purdy interestin' showin' tomorrow... Very convoluted also... Nevermind... Kinda hard thig to explain... One of the backardz kinda country things... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Rapparee Date: 24 Sep 10 - 10:39 PM Actually, to "buy the farm" meant a "farm" about 6 feet long and 3 feet wide and 6 feet (or so) deep. Even the current USD 100,000 serviceman's life insurance wouldn't pay off the mortgage on a farm. Naturally when I want it I can't find my copy of the "1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" but Snopes puts the use of "buy" or "bought" meaning killed back to 1825. "Become a landowner" was, according to the same source, a slang term for being killed in WW1. |

People had "children"... Prolly not enoufgh house for "children"... One child??? Different story... But, the farm/house is in "showable" shape so now it's just a matter of discipline keepin' it this way so if we get a call that someone wants to see it that we won't have to panic... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: gnu Date: 25 Sep 10 - 06:35 PM It's all about finding the right buyer. When I sold my camp (sniff) I couldn't get anyone to buy it for nearly two years... a $35,000 camp, but it was on a one acre government lease. NOBODY wants to have anything to do with the government. I found a buyer. Had I still been asking $25k, I would have got close to that, but I was happy to get $18k (a profit for me in the long run). Sometimes, ya gotta sit on sommat for a while. But, I don't think Bobert will have to sit too long... it's beautiful. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 26 Sep 10 - 08:44 AM Well, maeve... We went out yesterday and put surveyer's tape on the plants that do not convey... Ain't gonna be as bad as when we moved here from Wes Ginny... That was right at 550 plants... I think this time it may be closer to 50 that will be moved... Okay, we have a couple three hundred more that are growing in pots or growing in the heeling bed that we're growing on from cuttings... And if we get some rain then we'll take some more cuttings and start them but at least these plants are very manageable and can live in pots quite nicely... As fir this farm being a retirement home??? Maybe??? Ya'll take up a collection and buy it... That fine with me... We'll send ya'll pics of the new joint ion Charlotte... B~ |
