Do you remember a BBC produced radio show from the 1970s called folk weave.?can you tell me something about it?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it went around the country recording folk clubs. It sounds as if this is doing it on the cheap, but it would have cost a lot more than a studio-based show, especially as they paid the performers. In those days there were lots of thriving folk clubs and performance standards at many of them were very high.

It came to my club (Blackmore Folk Club in Essex) - the club room was quite small at the best of times and the space was reduced by the need to make room for the microphones. Somehow we managed to squeeze in more audience than usual and get through a long list of singers with more than usual efficiency. it was a great night which I still have on tape, unfortunately without a working cassette player to hear it on.

I was surprised a few weeks later to receive a lengthy BBC contract, full of clauses about repeat and overseas performance fees and lots of other totally irrelevant stuff, and a cheque for £5, from which I remember they'd deducted 5p for National Insurance. To my regret I seem to have mislaid the contract, which is certainly the most impressive one I've seen in my (strictly semi-pro) musical career.

Would anyone know if the people at the show were recording these shows, commiting them to vinyl, and sending them to radio stations for airplay?

Yes Tony Capstick was the presenter. I have a cassette tape from 1974, which includes myself, along with Derek & Hazel Serjeant, who ran the club, among others.
I know what you mean about the BBC contract, but I seem to remember the princely sum of £12, was what I was paid.
I sent my contract to Equity, so that I could get myself an Equity card, and once I got the card, I never did any more work that required it.
Don't think Equity ever returned the contract!

I don't know about vinyl, there was a big fat snake running out of the pub window to a big BBC outdside broadcast van. I don't know what the Beeb did with the recordings but I wouldn't count on them being in the archives.

I think Tony Capstick did present it, but that bit was in the studio.

I recorded my broadcast off-air.

As one of the many engineers who had the honour of sitting in a transit van, out by the bins, at the back of some nondescript pub in the middle of bloody nowhere. Tony Capstick, yes (before my time) but latterly Jim Lloyd were the presenters. Folkweave was a Birmingham production, out of Pebble Mill. (Long demolished). And, sadly, nearly all of the tapes have gone as well.
It's a real shame that the Beeb threw them astray. Hey Ho!
All those Outside Broadcasts were done on a shoe string anyway.

When did it come from Pebble Mill in Birmingham? I made a lot of studio items for Folkweave(when Peter Pilbeam was producer and Tony Capstick the presenter) and it was always in the Manchester studios then. That would be late 70's, early 80's I would guess. I have a few tapes from that era that Peter P passed me, but I imagine most got wiped unless people had a particular reason to sneak them out.

Yeah, my brother had me listen to it as I was getting into folk music at the time. Little did I realise Tony would become such a good mate, helping me get into radio (for what good it did but I digress...)

You always knew who was appearing at The Boundary Inn in Worksop because Tony's in laws lived near and he could enjoy a good night, have a few and not have to drive home. A bit of a bugger but still miss the old sod.

Later, Folk on 2 became the BBC national dish for folk with Jim lloyd, transmogrifying (there's a word) into Mike Harding's weekly show now.

I have some 100 cassette tapes of Folkweave with Tony Capstick from the 1970s, including one memorable one when he was pi$$ed to the eyeballs and sounded like it. Also I have a special one featuring the Abingdon Traditional Morris and the Ock Street Mayor event, which was so special that I have now mislaid it.

Also I was in communication with a guy (apparently a banjo player on the folk scene) who emailed me that he had rescued a quantity of Folkweave master tapes from a skip behind the studios in Manchester. He said that he'd digitised them, but when I asked for CD copies he clammed up and I never heard from him again. These recordings are now deemed to be lost.

I have been trying to track down other copies of Folkweave, and got some from in Abu Dubai.

Meanwhile some Folkweave transcription discs have appeared at various times. I have just bought one at £50 from Australia which features Vin Garbutt and the Chieftains live at Golders Green. Apparently the compere on this is one Toni Arthur. This is interesting because we were not aware that the programme went out overseas.

There were two other BBC discs on offer but I got beaten to it!! They too went for about £50 each. One featured June Tabor, the other Martin Carthy - live.

Then also after an appeal some other cassettes of Folkweave turned up. These are now in the public domain.

The big problem for me is what to do with my cassettes. I have offered them to the N.W. Music Archive but they said simply hold on to them ...

How sad is this? Folkweave came to the Sing Out Folk Club in Crewe in 1977 (Peter Pilbeam was the producer, but I can't remember a presenter coming to the club). Anyway, I was one of the resident singers recorded and broadcast ... and I still have the BBC payment slip!! I just shoved in a box and... well ... it's still there! Performance date was 3 Feb 1977 (it says) and I was paid £20, less £1.16 NI!!
I remember that on the day of broadcast, I was at a parents' evening at the school I worked in, but I must have got someone to record the programme.... no idea where that is - certainly not with the payment slip!
Peter Pilbeam is still going strong - I had an exchange of letters with him last year!

Sorry CJB, but I fear I was the one who beat you to the Carthy disc. I'm planning to digitise the contents shortly - although I don't currently have the right set up - so please contact me via my Carthy site and I'll happily forward you a copy once I get round to it. Can't help you with the June Taber I'm afraid.

There are also a number of other "Folkweave" programmes from 1977 and '78 available to download here

I've only listened to a couple of them so far so I can't give a detailed breakdown of the contents but the 12/1/78 programme has a nice Roy Bailey set.

CJB also wrote:

I have a theory about this - well, more of a hunch really! The Capstick-presented programmes were presented as "coming to you from Manchester" but the BBC Transcription discs say "Hello from the BBC in London..." (according to the transcript sheet that is included with the album). In suspect these discs were effectively "edited highlights" of the full programmes put together specifically for an overseas audience. And maybe Toni Arthur's dulcet tones were considered more appropriate for that audience that Capstick's South Yorkshire drawl.

I suspect Ralphie will be able to shed more light on this.

Aha - yes I guess Toni Arthur was more dulcet than Tony Capstick!!!

I think that the programmes were highly edited in content, certainly that happened in NZ with the London Folk Song Cellar recordings. The NZBC cut the recordings according to the length of time available for transmission. This wasn't funny when we'd waited up until 2.00 am for the LFSC programme to air on the NZBC National Programme on a working week (for me teaching kids) only to find it was cut to 30 mins &/or they'd repeated the previous week's programme.

At that time (mid-1970s) quite a few NZ folkies would wait up to record the programmes onto reel-2-reel tapes. It is these that we are now gradually digitising.

Also at that time it was illegal to import a reel-2-reel tape recorder with a sound amplifier built-in. I had to import a plain deck and use a radio re-jigged to play the sound. But such was the dearth of Brit. folk (or any folk for that matter) on the radio that all of this was worth the effort (and tiredness!!).

I digress. Actually I got the Folkweave disc of the Chieftains (at Golders Green Hippodrome) & Vin Garbutt. This is good 'cos I can send it to Michael Tubridy (ex-flautist of the group) - whom I know from when we were filming traditional step dancing in Ireland.

As for a copy of the disc you won that would be very welcome indeed - please. But make sure you use good equipment, the BBC discs can have some very hi-fi surface noise!! And the more you play it the less valuable it will become.

I can certainly do you a copy of the disc I won.

I'm not sure who got the June Tabor disc - but we have that recorded off-air anyway - by a guy in Abu Dabai!! It has yet to be uploaded to the web.

Apparently there were 7 discs on offer though!!!

Your links to the Folkweave uploads on MediaFire are interesting. I wonder where they came from - as if I didn't know!! I hear that there are loads more to be done. Keep linked. BTW make sure that the linking actually makes copies - 'cos if the source files get deleted those accessible by the link you gave might also disappear.

One thing that does need doing is for the running order of artists and music/songs to be listed for each Folkweave uploaded there.

And what we REALY need is access to the master tapes. Is anyone out there in Manchester-land who would like to PM me and see if he/she can get in touch with the 'banjo player' guy who rescued them from a skip? I don't really want to name the guy in public. But he has digitised them. I think the master tapes should go to the British Library Sound Archives, whatever happens to his digital copies.

Ah. My lost youth.
In 1975, I was given a cassette machine for Christmas. I made loads of tapes from Folk-on-whatever-day-of-the-week it was, and then Folkweave. I also taped off Radio Scotland too. I taped particular performers, not the whole programmes.
Yes, Peter Pilbeam produced and Tony Capstick presented.
I have a feeling that I taped the whole of the final broadcast.
Still have all the cassettes.

It's actually 'Bone-Lace Weaver' Years ago (I forget exactly when, and I'm not near enough to my scrapbook to check, but 60's or early 70's) I was researching East Midlands material for a show called 'Voice of the Loom.'I found a poem called 'Bone Lace Weaver' written by a Derbyshire man, Mr Wheatcroft, at the time of the Civil War. It praised the independent spirit of the girls who did the Bone -Lace weaving and seemed just right for the show, but it had no tune. So I made one up, gave it to Muckram Wakes who were my musicians for 'Voice...' It went into the show and also into the gig repertoire of Muckram Wakes, sung by Helen Watson & Suzie Adams. The girls later put it on to their own album, where it was heard by a band who speeded it up a little and used it when playing for dances. Peter Pilbeam heard this and asked me if i'd mind him using it for Folkweave, to which I agreed. There was no copyright on it, but it was typical of the gentlemanly behaviour of Peter that he asked my permission before using it. So, it went out week to week throughout the whole run of Folkweave. I was pleased that the tune was being heard and the song was being sung, even when I heard two women sing it at a South London club I was guest at, who, when I mentioned that I had written the tune told me quite indignantly that 'It was a Helen & Suzie song, everybody knows that.'

I think Peter Pilbeam was removed as producer the same time as Tony Capstick was replaced by Jim Lloyd. So who was the producer who took over from Peter P? My memory is hazy, but I think this transfer possibly occurred in 1980?

I don't think Frances actually produced the Jim Lloyd prog, although she certainly did produce some of the 60s/70s shows like Folk on Friday.
By the time Jim was doing Folk on 2, Frances was Controller of BBC Radio 2, and not producing programmes.

I know that Geoffrey Hewitt was producer from early 80s, as I had a lot of dealings with him during that time. There was an EBU (European Broadcasting Union) committee for folk music on the radio in Europe. Geoff was the BBC rep and I was rep for the IBA (Independent Broadcasting Authority) representing the various commercial stations which at that time had folk programmes. We actually produced several programmes under the auspices of the EBU, which were made available to all the member stations for broadcast. One of these was an In Concert of Relativity (John & Phil Cunningham plus Micheal & Triona O'Dhomnaill).Still have the tape somewhere I think.

Geoffrey remained as producer until the prog was privatised and farmed out to Smooth Operations, which I think may have been late 90s (anybody remember?). As I remember, he took retirement from the Beeb soon after, as did Jim Lloyd.

You could be right Graham. I'd forgotten about Folk on Friday. But I do seem to remember the two of them being connected with some folk show that I appeared on a number of times. She did become Controller R2, but I think that was after the folk shows. It's all history now of course, and my memory is fading, but I do remember that they were married. Folkweave and Folk on Fridays were good shows, with a strong grasp on the grassroots of the scene, and all the better for it.

"Have any of these Folkweave shows ever been committed to cd?" Yes but only by committed home-tapers. The BBC (actually BBC Radio Manchester) dumped the masters into a skip year's ago. None have ever been formally re-issued. And optical media is useless for archiving to anyway v.v. magnetic media (e.g. original tapes / hard drives / Internet). This latter project is expensive and time consuming - but is gradually being done with the help and generosity of loads of folk around the world especially in New Zealand (thanks Robyn and Mitch!!).

The mighty Folkweave truck parked up at the Blundell Arms courtyard in Birkdale, Southport - home of the Bothy FSC on 24th Sept, 1973 - a Monday bolt-on as the usual night then, as now was Sunday. Cables were run through the upstairs window and the engineer sat in the function room kitchen.
It was a full house as this was considered a big deal. I also think there was free admission! There was a real buzz - the BBC actually acknowledging us!
Anyway 2 programmes were done that night. Tony Wilson, the Club's MC introduced the Resident singers, who were in effect the support to Roy Bailey - the main guest and linkman Tony Capstick did the guest spot on the second programme himself.
I was just a floor singer then, but by backing Resident Dave Whitehead's guitar and vocal with a simple tambour beat on 'Lancashire Lads' I received the princely sum of £12.50 (I still have the covering letter) and I eagerly looked forward to regular cheques for repeat broadcasts. Alas, none ever came.
The programmes were broadcast on 18th October and 29th November 1973.
I have a CD of both, done from air on cassette tapes. Average quality but a moment in time. 'It all comes back like yesterday, it almost seems like yesterday' as Al Stewart might've said!

There's not many Folk on 2 recordings around. Certainly there's been no reports of any master-tapes around. They might all have been junked without anyone finding out - as was the BBC's want in the 1970s et al. And I don't think the prog. ever made it overseas via the Transcription Service of the BBC / World Service. And so it would not have been recorded by ex-pat. home-tapers. This is unlike the (London) Folk Song Cellar of which a number of recordings still exist. If anyone has any cassettes of any folk progs. we could borrow to digitise of course that would be great.

I have just dug out the Last Folkweave tape. It was broadcast 17.1.80 and was programme number 341. The names I have noted are Ar Log, Na Fili, Dick Gaughan and Roy Harris.
I have all sorts of stuff on tape, but although I generally noted the programme title, I seldom noted the date.
There I was in my teens, when the other girls were going gaga over Donnie Osmond or David Cassidy, taping the Yetties etc and telling myself that ONE DAY I would have the time to listen to all these tapes!

I was the leader of the Ranchers Band, who played Bone Lace Weaver as the signature tune for Folkweave. David Fleming-Williams, a member of the band, wrote the arrangement. We included it in the first of our LPs, 'Ranchers Regale'. I found some recently on eBay! Best wishes to all our old friends and acquaintances.

Forgot to mention, I have the two Folkweave Blackmore sessions mentioned in the second post, recorded off-air in Dubai, I think.

I met Peter Pilbeam recording items for Folk On 2 at the 1978 Edinburgh Folk Festival which I was there to review for The Guardian. My into-folk-from-my-early-influence nephew had recently been married to a fellow-kibbutznik from NY at their Golan Heights kibbutz, Machanayim, where he ran a folk club called Jacob's Ladder; and my wife Valerie, a photographer, had published a set of pix in Folk Review of the wedding-night concert, with such as Bobby Yelin from Chicago who was a visitor &c, under title of Israeli Kibbutz Folk Wedding. Peter Pilbeam had been struck by this feature, and invited me into his hotel room to record a piece about the occasion. The best place he found acoustically to use as the makeshift studio was the en-suite ~~ I wonder how many others reading this have been recorded for the BBC in a loo! I have, bugger·it!, lost my tape of the broadcast which went out some time in Autumn/Winter 1978. Don't suppose anyone has a recording of it anywhere? The Beeb, I gather, have wiped all the R2 tapes from that era.

Huh - the web site was taken over by some Chinese cyber-squatter. And all the 'Lost Tapes' are really lost - they were never archived to Archive.org

I just discovered this thread and it looks like I'm about five years out of sync but ... I have a whole raft of reel to reel tapes I recorded back in the mid-70's when I was in the US Air Force stationed at RAF Mildenhall. I know some of them were of Folk Weave and I went looking for one specific tune that I recalled recording. That tape was done on 1 Jan 1976 on Radio 2 ... my tape is a 4-track tape and I saved space by recording in mono so there's different content on the L and R stereo channels. Anyway, this particular broadcast featured material from the Deanwater Pub in Woodford and the Centre Folk Club in Portsmouth. I'm pretty sure I have other similar recordings dating from that time ... it's certainly interesting to read the comments in the thread ...
