Moonchild,

Since you asked---Alas, my heart, like my Bonny, lies over the ocean -- with all in the path of this thing.

Bill D, I can't remember - are you going to be at the Getaway? I'd love to learn that Rod MacDonald song.

Thursday morning here. South Carolina was spared the worst of the storm, due to an unexpected weakening of the winds and a slight eastern turn at the last minute. As far as I've been able to find out, no one was killed here, except for one or two traffic fatalities. The storm landed near Wilmington, North Carolina, and there was considerable damage to property, trees, and streets, but none to people as far as I know. Right now it's passed Norfolk and is continuing up the coast, but getting weaker. Think of our Northern friends now, as we here calm down and are grateful. Thanks again for all the kind words.

Chet

Chet -- Glad you're safe and well. As of 12:30 p.m. the 16th, we here in the D.C. area are getting torrents of rain, but it's just a nuisance, not a danger. Thanks, Bill, for posting "Sailor's Prayer." A great song! (Yes, Dani, Bill is always at the Getaway. We'll gang up on him and make him sing it!) Kath

I've had the weather channel running non-stop and I was glad to see the storm weakening. I'm very happy to hear from you Chet and we are all happy at the outcome, but like yourself, we now turn our attention northward. Looks like our DC group is in for some major rains at least. Take care guys....

Two of my office "mates" are in Boston for some training, with the thought that they would miss any bad weather here in Tallahassee. When I talked to them this am, the plea was "SEND GALOSHES AND UMBRELLAS!" We haven't heard anything from the Boston 'cats ... Barry Finn ... where are you?

I'm sooo excited about winning the bid on katlaughing's jewelry! It was touch and go between me and folk 1234, but worth it. Also, the bidding lingo back and forth was great fun ... thanks, folk 1234, for picking up the banter and running with it. kat sent me photos of the necklace she has made for me and it is absolutely stunning. If you like unusual handcrafted jewelry, contact her, she has the gift.

Keep safe, all ... moonchild

Bill D.,

Rod Mc Donald used to be a New York songwriter. I believe he calls Delta, Fla. home now.

Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain. I can hear it on the roof here at work. They will let us go home in a few hours so we only have daylight to deal with the winds and rain. We have flooding already in places that don't flood. I've called my 18 year old son at home. He's holed up with food and water. He should be safe. I'm not going to risk driving to him this evening. I'll stay with Marge who lives much closer. She won't mind ***BG***.

I remember that only a dozen years ago, I would have struck out for home 40 miles away with an "I can do it" attitude. Two hours later, I would make it home and collapse from fatigue. Maybe I'm just growing up.

North of Boston in New Hampshire, it's been raining all day. The wind has been steadily increasing, but isn't that bad. It's going to be raining for a long time, though.

It's pouring down from the heavens in Upstate NY as well; though after the summer we've had I really can't say I mind. I just hope it stops before the outdoor events I have to do this weekend.....

But it wouldn't be the first time I spent a day strolling and singing in the rain....

Just talked to my daughter in CT. She said it had stopped raining for a bit, but while we talked, it started back up. word is it will get heavier through midnight wiht lots of wind. Doesn't sound too bad.

Moonchild...you are a dear. The bidding postings you and Folk1234 wrote are worthy of a thread all of their own! I wasn't sure how that was going to work, since there was no product except what was in my head. Thanks for showing how it could work. I appreciate it and your necklace went out today.

Glad everyone is safe. Big RiB, older AND wiser.:-) Rog & I sometimes drive out past the litle ranch we used to have, had to hike in on snowshoes a few times, etc. It was primitive, hauled our own water, etc. Now, we look at each other and say, "What were we thinking?! Never, again!"

Just before school got out, it started raining buckets today. Took about 15 minutes longer than usual to drive home (plus avoiding pools on the roadway & branches), but I am safely home. We are due to get 40 mph winds & 6 or more inches of rain overnight. The good news is that we needed the rain. The bad news has to do w/ my basement & potential loss of electricity. No particular worries.

Amazin' isn't it, what we used to be able to do! (and voluntarily!) Now we sing "hey, hey, hey, hey, who woulda thunk it?", to quote one of my favorite songs.

It's 5:20 p.m., and the rain has now stopped in D.C., although lamarca (my neighbor as well as my friend) tells me our homes have been without power most of the day. The forecast for the next three days is bright sunshine and cool fall temperatures. Good thoughts to all of you farther north where it's still storming, and to you southern 'catters cleaning up after one ferocious storm. Hope people, pets, and property are intact. Kath

Of course, Kath's and my neighborhood tends to lose power when a squirrel sneezes on a transformer...One of the few drawbacks of living in a great old neighborhood with lots of nice mature trees is that said trees tend to fall on power lines during any kind of storm...

Song Kath quotes is one of Greg Brown's finest - I'll post the lyrics if anyone's interested.

We're supposed to get hit the worst tomorrow. I live inland, so it won't get bad, but the wind is pretty fierce now and I've lost power a few times.

It looks like the center of the storm is going to pass directly over annap's house, and she's practically at sea level, perhaps less than 50 feet from a tidal river. I'm aiming all my good thoughts in her direction.

Hi Jeri, not widy west of you, Got a good bit of rain though.
Hi Moonchild, I'm taking a break right now from pumping out the cellar, the rains let up a bit. I started the foundation were we once had a porch & the cellar bulkard turned into a catch basin & guess where it drains. Any way they saying now it's going to lighten up a tap. That's like the tide's going out for a couple minutes & then it's gonna come roaring back in again. Well maybe I'll tune back in after I get another break during my watch. Goodnight for the moment. It seems our neighbors in northern Vermont & New York are getting slammed but up here it's gotta be minimal compared to what our friends to the far south got dealt. Hope those that have already been pasted by are ok. Good luck all. Barry

Well, the worst we got was leaves & small branches down & an inch of water downstairs. There is a lot of local flooding & road erosion, though, & all the schools in the area are closed today. My town & the next one over declared a state of emergency & smart folks are staying off the roads. Many people are without electricity. We were among the lucky. Duane had a terrible time getting home last night. Many roadways were covered in deep water & were impassable. He had to try several routes before he found a passable way home. Now, I need to check w/ my sister in Maine.

best,

Anna, how are you doing down there in Jersey? From accounts on the weather channel, it looks like you may have gotten the worst of the storm? Hope all is ok.

Here in RI we had a dinky little windstorm. Didn't even lose power, and the trees all seem to be in place. Beautiful angry seas here at our house today.

We rarely get such weather here, but my folks remembered Hurricane Hazel many years ago, and it was a frightening time. Be safe my friends.

Hi Guys!! I'm fine, Jeri. Thank you and everyone else for your concern. Here you were all worried and I was having a ball. Yes, it passed right over our little peninsula but thank goodness we were at low tide. We went out on the gazebo many times and just enjoyed the elements in all their glory. They have such glory!!

About 3pm, when the trees were all bent at a 45 degree angle, we received a phone call telling us about a hurricane party at the local beach pub. Off we went to Donovans. They had a live band (sorry, not folk and very loud and electric). Perfect for the day. Honey got to play loud and powerful drums, and I got to dance to my hearts content. ...after about three Tanqueray and tonics.

Donovans has a large deck that overlooks the ocean and we spent lots of time out there when we weren't inside making music and dancin'. Glenn has been a surfer for about 28 years and he was beside himself with the beauty of the waves. He's probably out there today.

What a surprise this morning. I thought I might have another day out of work, but there was the sun and very few clouds. So, here I am, still filled with awe at the storm and the music and the fellowship and the fun.

When's the next one!!

LOVE, annap

We got slammed pretty badly in Northern Delaware. Two children drowned in a storm drain. Lots of property damage. Around 3:00 a.m., a huge ash tree came down on my roof and through the ceiling (of the cottage I've been renovating for the last year!) and caused a lot of structural damage. But, my dog and I weren't hurt and it should be covered by insurance. I live in a small, closely knit village and the neighbors were wonderful. Everybody rallied around and helped each other bail out basements and dig trenches and, generally, checked on each other throughout the storm.

Oh, I'm so sorry. How insensitive I am. I didn't mean to make the horrors of what Floyd did insignificant. My heart goes to to the people who sustained losses and to the people who died. Again I'm sorry.

We were so glad that our losses were so insignificant that we were elated and celebrated. We had been a little frightened of what was coming and were so glad when nothing did.

Here in Connecticut, our power went out the day BEFORE the storm, for no reason that we ever found out. The worst part was that our cars were prisoners in the garage, because we couldn't get the garage door up. Yeah, I know about the manual release. But that's when we found out that the spring on the heavy double garage door was broken and we couldn't lift the door up!

So the actual storm, with newly restored power and just major wind and torrential rain was easily weathered. We do now have a tropical lagoon in our backyard pool which we decided not to close last weekend. Every leaf from the neighborhood is decorating the bottom and sides of our pool. (What am I doing surfing when I should be skimming??)

A heart felt "Thank Goodness" to all of you right-coaster mudcatters. I've been out of touch for two days, after glorious battle with Kin of the Moon for the mysterious humorous feline bauble. Upon my return I find that the wrath of nature has dampened, but not destroyed the special kinship of the Clan of the Catters'. To Annap: I thought of you frequently & I'm so happy you all are OK. I should'a known you'd be partying! To Moonchild: My most worthy adversary, you done good and you earnt'd your bauble. To Kat: I'll be in touch to see if I can get some baubles in the old fashoined way. To all: In thankful celebration, let's sing the words of Bob Franke, "The Great Storm is Over".

Here in Jacksonville Florida, we made it out of the storm very well...My bass player, who lives in Flagler Beach Florida and is a horse owner who braved last year's fire storm to save them was missing in action with her horses until 1:00 this morning, when she sent the email below...I think its worth sharing (especially since she's making it to our gig 150 miles across the state tomorrow)...

It is 1:15 AM (friday I think) and we just arrived home from the Second Annual Horse Evacuation. I have to go to work in about five hours. My house is a total mess, but intact, just a few shingles missing and a few small leaks. I CANT BELIEVE WE HAD TO DO THIS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We got the first horses moved out Monday night and trailered all night long and most of the next day. We had to make three trips with every trailer we had to get them all. At least we had more time than during the fires. I can hardly type because my hands hurt so bad from cleaning stalls. With 26+ horses (about 29 I think), stall cleaning took most of the day. We did have time to enjoy ourselves a little bit though, not all work. Everybody is calling me a hero, but I don't feel much like one, just really tired. How did you all make out? It seemed like every time I saw the news, the hurricane was either aimed at Sebastian, Flagler Beach, or Jacksonville. I really thought the entire east coast of Florida was going to be destroyed. It was too close for me!!!! Yes, I am still on for Crystal River, as long as everyone else is. Of course I will probably be doing a lot of sleeping while we are there. Just wake me up in time to play. I promise I will take a shower first. Right now my perfume is eau d'manure. Flagler Beach lost most of the sand dunes, at least as far as I could tell in the dark. We almost lost A1A in a couple of places, and lost the end of our pier (again). I guess I'd better try to get some sleep. See ya soon, MMMmmmmmmmmm

I wasn't paying much attention to this one, thinking of all hurricanes as southern animals, and today I found that a fair amount of central Vermont was without electricity, and it was mighty wet. It has helped out our low water table, and folks seem to be doing ok, and in good spirits. One customer came in today and described cutting a tree out of her driveway in order to get to work. She used her son's camp saw, some 18 inch hand thing. She's gonna get a chainsaw b'gawd!!

It was still quite windy and wet as I walked home from work, but we are supposed to have a lovely fall weekend to follow it up.

The Great Storm is Over (Well, Kendall, how are you to the east???:)

Good to know everyone is safe. Heroic woman with those horses; thanks for sharing that with us. My daughter used to be in charge a couple of days of the week at a stable in CT, of taking care of about 30 horses, making sure all the mucking out, feeding & watering, leg-wrapping etc. got done. It's a lot of hard, but rewarding work.

I wonder if the 1900 Galveston Hurricane was called "Bubba." It was fully worthy of that state and its excesses: it killed several hundred people--and inspired a fine song: "Wasn't That a Mighty Day!" Bob Gibson recorded it.

I spoke to my ex-niece-in-law (the one whose husband, my nephew, left for someone he'd met on line) this evening and asked her how bad Atlanta took it: She said the weather stayed nice and sunny, but there was a hell of a traffic jam because of people from first Florida and then the Carolinas fleeing the storm.

I hope all our friends made it through, along with their friends and families and pets and guitars--and computers, so they can check in and assure us they're fine. --seed

No problem in this part of FL(Lakeland). Got less than an inch of rain and only a few twigs down from our fruit trees. Really could have used a little of the rain others had dumped on them.
No sustained winds of any great strengh; a few gusts to 50-60 mph. Stil we think about what might have been if old Floyd had kept on coming across with 155 mph winds. Not fun. Glad to be out of it.
