looks like it will be another great weekend in June - Barrels of free beer in the middle of a field with some of the best musicians in Kent and plenty of free food (thursday)look forward to seeing all my mudcat mates again.

Unlikely to be any free beer this year as we will have drunk it all by then, and the food is not strictly free, it is provided by the campers on a 'bring a dish to share' basis. It's still a great weekend though and all are welcome.There is a small fee for camping and a collection towards running expenses (Portaloos, wood, marquee etc.) on the Saturday night.

15th - 19th June this year, who's going?

I first went to Folkmob's Knockholt campout about 12 years ago. It is a superb field - with excellent facilities. Folkmob provide real decent toilets and a fire to keep everyone warm throughout the whole of the evening. You can watch the sun go down - the stars at night - and the returning early morning sun. Guess how many songs and tunes you can get through during that.

Also, if you get fed up with canned beer and burnt food you can take the short walk down to the Tally Ho Pub for midday meals, early supper or just a real decent pint.

Looking forward to seeing old chums!.

Flipping heck - yes, I spent some years faddling about while doctors investigated a disc problem - in the end a sports physio said "lose weight and get fit - which at that stage I did, clanking iron about and stuff, little though you would so think today, and it's been more or less OK ever since. As you say, muscle spasm yields to relaxants and painkillers - and anti-inflammatories help both types.


Moral - don't have babies (it's what kills most womens' backs, that and carying them around on one hip and large handbags) and don't do ironing!


One of my usual sources for chillies failed me for Scotch Bonnets today so even harissa paste is doubtful and I won't be there Thurs for the feast unless I prep something here and drive up specially - and logcutting will be Friday PM at the earliest.

I haven't ironed for years. I mostly dress in t shirts... Any creases fall out with wear. Bad news about Rachel's back. If it's disc trouble - been there, and had to retire early from work at 37! I know she is slightly older than that, so, it could be a disc. With luck it heals, (mine was not completely done in),merely prolapsed, but I occasionally get arthritis. It's hurting now, just in sympathy. Also, gone down with sore throat, just as himself is recovering....if better, and weather good, will be there on Thursday.

Us cats are very sensitive... especially the small domesticated moggies.
The two next door sit and wait for someone to come home. If I am out, they sit outside my front door.

I am back in trouble with my kidney stone again - I know now that I only have to wait for the pain to stop so I can do that, but I was going to make an interim trip to Knockers to cut the wood with my chainsaw and I probably won't be able to get up there with the vardo until Friday.

Unless the pain goes off.

Is there anyone personally known to me and safe with a chainsaw who could borrow mine and make the trip to do that, or is this year's wood small enough that it can wait?

Actually, the pain may be going off a bit now, but better to have a plan B just in case... - so contact me first before just rolling up.

As for me, I've been hallucinating on Diazepan and Tramadol, not to mention the morphine which is still in my system. Apparently, according to my children, I've been ranting about multiplying spiders and killer trees. Who needs magic mushrooms!!! Well done Rachel.

If it's muscle spasm and there is no current disc damage (check with Dr and physio first), try what saved me back in the late 80s - strenuous loss of weight (I lost about 4 stone on allegedly dangerous "micro-diets") and at the same time was clunking metal about in a gym - being careful however with situps which are hell on backs.

I even got quite pleased with my body shape back then!

It's not a cosmetic thing, although I'd love to be a size 12 (i.e. pre-children!), but at my age..the grand old age of 46, it's time i took care of myself for my health's sake. So it's joining David Llyod gym and taking up cycling again.

Not being funny (I mean look at me) but don't go to a poncy gym. Go to the local place where the freaks go. They are serious. And they will just love to help an innocent female!

Cycling is hell on back (think of posture). I suggest a different sustainable exercise - I (then) did walking and jogging and got into exploring rights of way (hard for you Londoners).

Ok, walking it is then. Got a trip planned in the Yorkshire Dales (Pennine Way) in August. Think I'd get bored in the gym anyway.
As....for me being 46, working in a women's refuge with a load of hypervigilent, and unregulated children; where everyone looks haggard and stressed,I have the privilege of leaving that place every evening, putting my feet up in the bath and having a large glass of wine and some visualisation techniques. Works wonders. The elixir of youth.

Gym actually makes you feel good - the whatever it is chemicals the body produces when working really intensely leave you feeling quite "pumped up" for a few hours. It was a good feeling. It will also strengthen the relevant muscles in the back and that may well be important for you.

As well as prowling around with the dogs for about half an hour a day (back then) on weekdays and for about an hour a time at weekends with an ordnance survey map, every weekday I used to walk briskly for half an hour each way from the bus-stop or train stop in London to the office. I stayed ten stone for several years that way, between about 1988 and 1992/3 (ie age of 40 to 45). The working lunches at Tarlo Lyons with sandwiches with fattening fillings and my hatred of wasted food were my undoing! Downhill all the way after that.

I have no idea what a "visualisation technique" is.

By the way do set a cookie on your computer or remember to sign in by name every time or the mods will get grumpy!

Had a lovely time despite the van springing a leak and having the headache from hell most of Friday.

Feast was well attended. Pierre le Chappeau's chicken was melt in the mouth good.

Field did not stay soggy, but the clear nights Thursday and Saturday meant it was cold cold at night.

Really love the intimacy and long time stories from Knockholt veterans, though some were very much missed. You know who you are.

Getting the van out this morning was a dawdle. Sorry I couldn't stay to help with clearing the field this morning, 2 of our party of 3 were not feeling very well. I can't speak for Crowsister but I am still feeling quite rough.

Looking forward to Autumn Gold and happy to hear it is back on. Hopefully it won't take us 4 hours to get from mid Essex to campsite on Friday evening.

I'm trying to work out roughly how many people were there (and how many camping units) each night.

Weds, I was in and out with the chainsaw and did not stop but I think it was 4 units and 10 people.

Thurs I was not there but am guesstimating 6 units and 15 people.

Fri - I was physically present but a little unaware(!) but I think 10 or 11 units and maybe 24 people

Sat - definitely 15 units and I think I counted 42 round the campfire but maybe not all stopped to camp.

So in total roughly 35 unit/nights and 90 people/nights.

Given the weather predictions we had been facing I can't imagine it ever being fewer.

Assuming all goes well with the new committee and the plans for Equinox - and the new "self-financing" basis - it still looks like its going to be a great cheap DIY weekend.

Thanks Tam and Richard for the reports. The turnout was excellent, given the weather conditions. Did Pierre do his lime chicken? That was gorgeous, and that comes from someone who doesn't go a bundle on chook.
Generally, it's tasteless, and dry, but when cooked with herbs, and spices, it can be nice. Glad that the Autumn Camp is back on again.
Hope to see some of you at Crayside on Saturday.

It was a superb knockholt ,the fire stayed alight through out each down pour. Those Logs were huge so thanks to Richard for cutting them down to size in what was on occasions in pouring rain and on 2 accessions a right down pour whereby he had to seek shelter and eat a welcomed Sausage and Rocket sandwich and halt cutting temporarily for safety
reasons ?
The feast was great and all the food tasted lovely well done.
The field posed no problem in regards to getting on and off despite the weather.
People moaned the fire was not hot, remember folks we are arguable camped on the highest point in all Kent so the heat from the fire does not come out it goes straight up into a cold sky? You wont benefit from the knockholt fire at all wear good warm clothes and a layer of thermals ? only on a windless warm night will you warm from the fire. Fact. We had Elm this year which burns lovely and hot but not on a barren summit on a clear windy nigh?

Look forward to all this again in September.

Oh I think that fire was HOT. There was a period when many new logs were added and they were shading people from the heat, but the flames were licking up about 12 feet high - I have photo on phone to prove it. I'm sure that Ken has many pix too - he seemed to be filming a lot.

Ken always does film a lot, he enjoys the singing and playing. Indeed the Saturday night was a break for us all weather wise ?

I think in regards to the Marquee which went up very quickly and like wise on the Sunday came down very quickly was a gathering point for a lot of people. in inclement climate?

its a Bloody Palaver putting the Marquee up and I agree a modern set of electrical tools would make a difference with the erection? but would electrical tools fit between the poles /frame work and the nuts and bolts?? its would make the job much quicker without fiddling about with spanners? but we tried a metric socket set one year and the thing would touch the nuts ?

Im pleased there were no logs to man handle on the Sunday the few that remained I imagine were taken home which saves some folk a lot of heavy lifting?

Quite a few familiar faces missing this time, and we were in danger of growing webbed feet. However thanks to Richard Bridges fine efforts, trees were transformed into logs, so we were able to get round the fire during dryish spells.
Music was good and varied, as was the saturday meal,so we enjoyed.

The Knockholt camps have been running now for 18 years. We began back in 1993 and I think there were about 11 of us that first time as well as an assortment of our various children. We used an old ridge tent as our kitchen and shelter (some of us are posing in front of it in the photo I took with Dave's camera) and our WC was a bucket in a toilet tent. We'd graduated to a porta potti by the second year but emptying it down a drain at the bottom of the field was still a very nasty job. As the Folk Club grew in numbers there were more members wanting to sample the Knockholt experience so we decided to hire a couple of toilets financed by the club funds, but in the early years we foraged for our wood and rubbish clearance wasn't an issue, so that was our only outlay apart from the farmer's fee (which has never increased).
Over the years Knockholt became increasingly popular and we welcomed into our midst extended families, neighbours and other friends from the folk world, all of whom added a little something to the Knockholt magic but which also meant it became necessary to hire 4 toilets for the June camp and 3 for September as well as buying in wood and hiring a skip for the rubbish. We bought a new marquee which was cheaper than hiring one for two camps – but it needed some maintenance. Gradually the cost of running the camps increased until last year we tipped the scales at over a thousand pounds (which did include some one-off items like a new reliable hose) – still financed by the Folk club funds. The money collected from campers (£4 per unit per night) all went to the farmer for the use of his field.
Like all good things the "Knockers Fest" is still evolving but in recent years the balance has gradually shifted - where once Folkmob regulars made up the majority of the Knockholt stalwarts that is no longer the case so it now seems the time is right for Knockholt to fly the Folkmob nest and become financially independent of the club. To ensure that the camps continue to thrive they need to be financed by those of us who attend and derive so much pleasure from the events.
After an impromptu meeting in the marquee last weekend, where everyone present was very supportive and helpful in formulating the plans for the new self financing system, it was decided that this September's camp will still go ahead. The autumn camp will be a bit of a test run to see if our calculations are correct in predicting that we can reliably cover the costs. Expenditures are largely fixed, but income depends entirely on how many come. If it is too tight then charges will have to go up in future, but if there is a significant surplus then charges may if it is prudent go down. Details and examples follow.

It seems very reasonable to me. There are four potential answers to you Woodsie if it really is a problem. I say four but there may be more.

1. Find £10 per night rather than (for example and not by way of limitation) spending £50 in the Tally Ho.

2. Share with another person in your unit to reduce the cost to £7.50 per night (less than the cost of three pints).

3. Persuade the Folkmob committee to reinstate the or a subsidy

4. Hope that cost reduction is possible - one possibility is to replace the skip with me making a tip run with my trailer. But the wood is already a real bargain, and cost cutting on the grottibottis is likely to be most unattractive - I remember your views the year that they were - er - badly polluted by an overindulger.

The Tally Ho pub is one of the most enjoyable experiences at Knockholt and any amount that I choose to spend there is value for money and nothing to do with paying £40 to sleep in a field with minimum/zero facilities that is not value for money. A skip? never needed it in the previouse 12 years that I went. Yes and I was usually one of the two or three there on the last Sunday helping Mick Forde with clearing the final ashes. I don't wish to subsidise iresponsible people who can't be bothered to clear their own shit when leaving the field.

By the way, the cost of camping was £3 rising to £4 around 2001 not always £4 as it says above/below. When I was a regular attendee/committe member of folkmob I paid £2 / £1 weekly fee and bought at least 1 raffle ticket ans as myself and Dave Kenningham went EVERY week that came to at least £130 a year. The wood and portaloos were paid for from this money as were the upkeep of the PA system and underwriting of guest nights with lower than expected turnout. There was always still a healthy balnce at the end of the year. This whole putting the price up thing has come about in recent years due to new people appointing themselves to the Folkmob committe (no vote taken for years now) Some of these people newcomers despise subsidising "outsiders" who don't contribue during the year! I will not name them but they have actually told me this. I myself have always looked upon most of the non-folkmob regulars as "invited guests" and it's great to bring more diversity to the event - apart from a few occasions when we have had certain undesirables.

I is sad to see this event, which used to be the highlight of my year - seperate itself from the folkmob.

Incidentally I did join once. Am I still ipso fact a member? If I am you might well have my vote if there were relevant pro-Knockholt votes.

But if Folkmob are not prepared to subsidise Knockholt (and at present it seems they are not) then Knockholt must sink or swim for itself. And it is still the highlight of my year.

But I just don't see the point of spending huge amounts in the pub - you can do that any time but you can only sit round the campfire and sing at Knockholt. If you are going to spend £50 on two consecutive days (so making £100) in the pub it seems odd to carp at camping at £10 per night - including loos cold water and a lovely fire.

I did at one time maintain a membership list on an excel spreadsheet (you were on that) I offered it to the junta and was told "no thanks we are compiling our own list" I still attend folkmob now and then and perform regularly with the founder (the great DK) but will not waste the time, money and effort that I put in during the golden years at The Tudor Barn.

If you were there the night of the M - - - C - - - - (fill in the blanks) dysentry attack you will realise why economising on the bogs is not a good plan. September only gets 3 anyway.

If we show a surplus in September then next year will be cheaper: there is no plan to make a profit, but it would be nice to have a cash cushion so that if there is an event with low turnout or an unexpected expense the committee do not have to put their hands in their own pockets.

The calculations have been done on the basis of the low turnout this summer, so if numbers do rise costs will be able to go down.

The folkmob committee have always discussed things fully and every member of Folkmob has a chance to put up for election. Mick, I seem to remember that although you were at last years AGM, you did not wish to be on he committee. Unfortunately owing to Sue's incapacity we have suspended the committee for the time being.

Presumably (and I think I am a Folkmob member from decades back) the committe could be recalled by a vote of no confidence at an EGM - but it may depend on the constitution. I can see me needing to hunt for a copy of Daly's "Club Law".

Sue seemed fine if a bit hobbled at Knockholt.

I hate the expression "going forward" but I am sure (which means "I don't know") that the costings are open (I don't like the word "transparent" in this context either).

If I go for say 3 nights, it will cost me £30. Bargain of the century. I'd have gone to double that. And if I get my trailer rebuild so the skip cost vanishes, and if we get more people than the historically low June turnout, the cost per head/unit per night WILL drop. No-one wanted to land anyone with having to fund a shortfall in revenue, and I'm sure (and this time I mean I DO know) that that is right.

1. TheSilentOne and I think the proposed charge is very reasonable.

2. Two portaloos is two too few. I had to do some cleaning in 2 of them several times to get them useable this last camp.
Tip for number 2 users, lay some loo roll down in the bowl before you go and then all slips down quite easily when you flush.

3. Fundraiser - I am all for raising some fun(ds).

That's exactly my point Peter. I paid my subs for years at FM as I said earlier - If not funding Knockholt - as set out in the constitution - where is the money going? If it is to fund guests that cannot draw enough supporters to cover their fee then the argument that it's not fair to subsidise a bit of firewoods and 3 or 4 potrtaloos for the campers doesn't hold water. Yes I would pay £50+ for the few days at KH. But in principle To be expected to pay up to £130 a year to subsidise minority appeal guests, Bring your own food to Xmas party and pay for Knockholt is too much to askof loyal folkmob attendees (sadly no me these days) Why not call the new set-up The Knockholt Club with Mick F as honarary chairman and have an elected committee of 4 or 5 people who must have something to contribute.

It's all a bit ad hoc at the moment, but there is an ad hoc committee and I suppose Sue is ad hoc chair. Elections are something to think about, but I'm not immediately clear how to organise them if wanted.

Personally (this is not a committee opinion) I'd be tempted to suggest, if there was to be a voting system, a weighted voting system with voter registration slips posted out after each Knockholt to paying attendees on the basis of their payments - valid I imagine for a year so that people who went to both events in the year would have more votes than those who went to one. BUT that would introduce considerable administration work and postage cost. AND...

I also suppose that a constitution would be needed (formally to create the committee) and then an elected committee, which would then adopt or amend the constitution, and there's need to be rights to call committee or general meetings.

It's all getting to sound a bit like hard work.

Maybe since Mick and Sue have the in with the farmer it is more sense to stay a benevolent dictatorship...



I haven't seen the FM constitution recently although I vaguely remember it used to be on the or an old website. Does it call for Knockholt? It would be an interesting issue as I don't suppose there is a mechanism set out to change the constitution...

The folkmob constitution was written by myself back in 2002 and presented to the then committee for amendmenrs/alteration - none were made. This was a reaction to pressure from thr council, who had written to the management of the Tudor Barn stating in effect that if we were running as a private club to be exempt fron the then "Two In A Bar" rule - we needed a constitution. None of the committee ever made ANY amendments - these were usually made by myself to reflect changes such as the move to the rugby club etc. I left the meeting a couple of years ago because I considered it to be unconstitutional - no votes taken just a free for all anybody could be on the committee even a bloke that only came to the club a few times and couldn't be bothered to come to the meeting was put on the committe!

How on earth, and who can police day visitors in order to charge them ?

Everyone camps too far away from the gate. However many advance tickets are sold, there are always the last minute people who turn up.

As for cutting the number of bogs.... it was me who suggested we need 4 in the summer... three is the absolute minimum. We should not have to be cleaning them all the time if people were more considerate. V.T. has a good point about paper usage. On past camps I've noticed that the washing (hands) water has often run out because people wash and brush up, and blokes shave in them. What's wrong with a washing up bowl in front of your uinit chaps? It's all cold anyway, but you could boil a kettle for washing.

Always bring spare loo rolls too, then there'd be enough to go round.

considering the way the weather has been in June for the last two years it may be worth while considering a movement of the event too a fortnight later in June when it appears the weather is glorious? or if thats too much maybe the wed immediately after the longest day rather then before? The weather is changing maybe we should change the event dates> Has we are not apart of folkmob anymore I can foresee this being a bonus weather wise?

I have never known anybody to shave in the portaloo. The water is usually pretty dodgey and there would be a risk of infection. I always wash my hands in my own water bowl. As far as the weather goes, in the last 12 years there has only been one washout in the June event - there have certainly been scorchers in june and washouts tend to occur more often in the September camp.

Most blokes don't shave at Knockers - or if they do use battery electric shavers, so although no doubt if the phenomenon has been observed it is real I don't see it as being likely to be a major contributor to water use. But maybe if the water in the basins in the grottibottis is that bad we should run the hose through them on arrival.

September 2008 - the weekend of my 60th birthday - was unremittingly dire, wevvawise.

This June was pretty iffy until Saturday.

in regards to folk keep harping on about bogs? I use a Philips
electric saver which I fully charge b4 I attend and it lasts the whole 4 days? Hairs in the sink think your self lucky you should see what I have seen in a Portaloo sink. Your eyes would clearly pop out your back side? The toilets at Piggies this year were very good. with only 1 being useable? Knockholt bogs were ok too apart from not arriving on the wednesday and had to crap in flint piy and then bury it? Palaver
