Sorry to have to ask so much stuff but...

Seems that there's a annoying smell of urine in the carpet going up the steps to the new house and I'd kinda like to make it go away...

Any ideas???

No, rap... I ain't gonna burn the house down!!!

Try Febreze for Pets...if that doesn't work there are a bunch of other "pet odor" removers out there.

OR! Replace the carpet!

Nononono... first you get the magic enzyme thingie. It EATS the organic odor-ingredients. It's exactly the same stuff as you'd put in the RV's waste tank, MINUS the nasty deodorizing smell those products have. Carpet cleaning pros use it all the time. I think they put it right into the rug shampoo nowadays. Or it can be a separate step. (I'm outta that biz a LONG time.)

THEN after that all dries you use the Febreze if a smell lingers.

That said, it will never come out if it's down in the pad. For that you gotta peel up the rug, send it out to be cleaned with enzymes, and put down a new pad, and, if it's wall to wall, restretch just like a new install.

But when you peel it up.... that is also when you see how widely the stuff had spread on the carpet's underside, and sometimes you'll see that the backing is rotted as well. Cuz that stuff is hard on burlap. An' it sits and sets..... this is why landlords do not allow pets. Major expense to undo peepee and poopoo.

And if the carpet is put down with those strips that have nails pointing up it could even be in the wood -- even the studs. We didn't buy a place just two door up from our house because there was cat pee in the carpet, pad, wall studs, sill plate....

Nature's Miracle is the name of the enzyme stuff. If it can get the smell of cat pee out, it can get rid of just about anything.

You gonna do DNA testing and findd out what peed on your steps?

At pet smart stores they have the expensive plain lable enzyme and the cheaper enzyme product that has a foul oderant added.

Get the expensive one.

You can add it to the wash cycle too. You put it where the bleach would go.

Interestingly enough, just last night a very bright fella I don't see often was telling me about what he did about cat pee. Went to the wooden floor, covered it with x number of coats of nail polish and ended with ureathane and paint. Said you can't smell it today no matter how good your smeller is.

Perhaps its the state smell. Perhaps it smells like that everywhere, and North Carolinans just need to get a sniff of it to swell up with pride. Reminds them of home, and the cat by the fireside.

Dab with white wine, soak it up, dry, rinse with very hot water, soak it up, dry then Fabreze it. If that doesn't work replace that area of carpet.

There is a commercial product, "Urine Neutraliser", sold by the gallon in bulk to places like nursing homes where this is a more than a wee problem. It works.

Prochem B153

They've produced a trickle of related products.

Oxygen bleach or peroxide works too.

As noted, if the pee has penetrated the wood (or whatever else is under the carpet) you may not be able to get it out, and replacing the steps might be in order.

The odor from what's in the carpet will disappear if you get the "what" out, and for most contaminants you can do a pretty good job with just a garden hose and a good "wet-vac" vacuum cleaner.

Wet the carpet down until it's "soppy" and then suck at least until you can't feel any moisture when you run your hand over it. Keep sucking even when you're not getting "liquid" so that you draw air through until it's pretty much dried.

Repeat until your vacuum cleaner burns out or until you're satisfied with the success of the cleaning.

There are a number of "cleaners" intended for use with "wet-vac carpet machines" that can be a help. The ones usually available with the "rent-a-cleaner" machines are okay for ordinary soil but not much use on "stubborn stuff." If you check your local lumber supplier, you may find some "industrial strength" stuff that will take engine oil and chewing gum out of the carpet. If you look for something labelled as a "high traffic carpet cleaner" you may find an "incredibly strong" kind.

I've used one such "high traffic cleaner" mixed in a pump-up garden sprayer to soak down the carpet, with my Shop-Vac to suck it back out, and successfully changed "black axle grease" (steps from garage to house) to fluffy pale blue (the original carpet color), but did find that the "cleaner" goes right through the shop vac, and the "vapor" will make you feel like you're sunburnt, and will eat the (plastic) lenses out of your spectacles - so use due caution if you go with an aggressive chemical cleaner.

The pee that's your problem is probably water soluble so you shouldn't need strong stuff, but you might need to adjust the pH of your "solution." Alternate applications with a little white vinegar (for more acid) and then with bicarb (baking soda for more alkaline) solutions may help with dissolving what's there.

Soak it and Suck it. Do it enough times and you should be able to get just about anything out of the rag.

When you get done with the cleaning, blowing a fan on the spot for a few hours may be in order for final drying - to avoid any possibility of mildew.

If you find that you really can't get it clean I suppose you might try one of the "neutralizes" or "cover-it-ups" that the pet shops sell for amateiuar use by those who don't know how to clean what's cleanable.

YOU CAN'T GET ANYTHING CLEAN WITHOUT GETTING SOMETHING ELSE DIRTY.

YOU CAN GET EVERYTHING DIRTY WITHOUT GETTING ANYTHING CLEAN.

...the vent for the air conditioner in the main flourier???

Yup, I have been assuming that it was in the carpet because you only smell it going up the steps... Ahhhhhh, kinda where the air from the blows???

This is worse, I think, than the carpet... It means that some critter has figured out how to get into the vent and set up a latrine in the vent work???

I'm going to talk with my HVAC guy and maybe get him to check it out...

No matter...

I learned a lot about cleaning pee from carpet... Maybe I should go pee down the steps as a test case for all the knowledge I now have...

Nah... Too busy for that... No, not the peein' part but the cleaning up... Sounds like a good winter project...

Amos: "It may be from the actual concrete or timber UNDER the carpet."

He is correct, so to alleviate that, you'd need to use polyurethane under the carpet, directly over the sub-floor, to lock it in. Other than that,..and I've mentioned it before, 'Odo-Ban'...cheap, too..about 10 bucks a gallon, and it lasts forever. You could be in a room, with a dozen people smoking cigars, pot, teasing a skunk, vomiting all over the place, and splashing diarrhea, on the furniture....when there is a knock on the door.....it's P-Vine and the cops, along with your local bishop......a couple of shots of that, from the spray bottle, and you would INSTANTLY be innocent!!!! They sell it at 'Sam's', hardware stores, and places like that...(I'm not sure about 'Cosco')....but once you've tried it, you'll always keep some on hand....just for such wondrous occasions!...in your case you could spray some directly on the floor, too...along with your armpits, and back of your underpants, where all those 'nicotine stains' are!!....AND for you, the best part of all....I don't think it's Republican!!!

Just shut up, and go get some...you can sue me later!....but at least you can meet with your attorney, in your living room, without running him out!

Easy, cheap, and it works!!.......(if not, you can always put it on a government benefits program!)

Jeez....such boneheads!!

Regards to the Pisser!!

Well, if it's in the AC vent it's easier to solve. Replace the entire system, ductwork and all. (It's probable that the smell is coming from an air intake vent. Some doggie or kitty or young kid peed in the air intake. Be sure to check it for rust and corrosion.)

I'll skip to the bottom. I skimmed and saw @Ranger1 with the same stuff I would recommend (is the company public? I'd like to buy stock!). Nature's Miracle. Go to your local Petsmart or Petco and find the white bottle with red lettering - they have several products for you to choose from. All things considered, it is very reasonably priced. I use the Skunk Odor Remover (don't wash the dog first, don't fool with tomato juice, just spray this stuff on the front end of the dog that the skunk hit. I don't wash my dogs after they get skunked any more, I just spray them with this stuff several times and let it dry between applications).

These enzyme treatments work better than anything else. You can also find them at janitorial supply places (under different names, but they do the same thing). Be patient, remove the foam pad and replace it, that stuff is cheap, and soak the enzyme into the underlayment, whatever it is, wood or concrete, before you put new foam and the carpet back down. It really does work.

Start farting in the ducts..then you'll have a full flavored homey aroma!!!

And BTW, the seller might have taken out an insurance on the house when they listed it. You're realtor would know about it. They, the insurance, would cover the cost of the correction....shit, get new carpets!..or ducts..or even a toilet with a wider mouth!...but the 'depends' you'd have to cover!

Now when I think of you, I'll remember P-Vine and the urine smell!..Its all relative!!

Tom cat pee has to be the worst smell if left to linger and even if you think you have got rid of it along they come again and spray everywhere no matter how you mask it. Disinfectant sometimes can have the same effect as Fabreze only it's a more of an institutional smell.
