It is most definitely "Walraven." While on a visit to Mentone, Alabama, a few years ago I was driving the back roads and found my self in Sulphur Springs which is not that far down the road from Rising Fawn. I came upon a mailbox with the name "Walraven" painted on it. It's a family name.

Hello--
So the thread is dated but I would add a couple of corrections if you are looking to be as true to the song as it is given to us: First it IS, "...and the trains THEY don't blow...". Second it is, "...She won't blow the whistle PULL..." Whether Norman Blake intended it that way is not the point. It is what he delivered on the album. I confess that I cheated: I recorded the song in digital format and slowed it down without changing the pitch and low the lyrics are pretty clear.

Cheers!

I hear Raven too

'Then one day they brought the news that tore hard every mind'

Small differences are not important if they don't change the meaning and they scan properly. I'm sure Norman varies the song a bit each time he sings it.

My kids are now 35 years old and I got this record before they were born - time flies.

Guest, what I hear different from you is listed below - mostly minor changes. I am convinced the woman's surname has two syllables, not one - I hear 'Raven'.

St1 L4 'Fanny Wall Raven's sick ...'

St2 L4 'She won't blow the whistle CALL from ...

St3 L2 'The preacherS came ...

St3 L3 'Then one day they brought the news that TORE HARD AT the mind'

St3 L4 'Fanny Wall RAVEN's gone away ...

St4 L1 '... THE winter's coming hard'

St4 L3 'Snow is falling ... ' [no 'The']

St4 L4 'And trains ... ' [no 'the']

My search doesn't come up with anything. Someone check my work, offer corrections if needed? Thanks.

Crossing No. 9
Norman Blake / Home In Sulphur Springs

Down on the Southern Railroad line on a drowsy August day
Came a man from across the tracks, and stopped our childish play
Boys don't you raise no cain today, I remember the words he said
Franny Wall Ray's sick you know, with a bad pain in her head

Well, we said we'd tell the engineer, that pulls old 41
Not to blow his whistle loud on the morning mail run
And the fast express from Birmingham that's always just on time
She won't blow the whistle low at Crossing No. 9

Well, the August days soon turned to fall, and a chill was in the air
The preacher came, the kinfolks went, and friends was everywhere
Then one day they brought the news that tore apart every mind
Fanny Wall Ray is gone away, from Crossing No. 9

Way back home in Sulphur Springs winter's coming hard
The Georgia wind is blowing shrill across the section yard
The snow is falling cold and white on the Southern Railroad line
And the trains they don't blow no more ---- for Crossing No. 9
