Well my missus is in Scotland visiting my middle daughter with the other girls having fun. I am home and don't know what to do. I called Spaw and got caught up. Bugged a bunch of other friends .. Now it is TV and Scifi channel ... Any suggestions other than shoot myself? I am thinking of doing something really exciting like moping the floor :-) But first I have to finish my ham sub and cola ... wow I am old.

It's another exciting night here on Leeside Drive. Drop over and we'll go for a walk in the fresh, cold air, tell jokes and lies and then... munch on subs... sigh.

A winter storm has dumped 18 inches of snow on Cape Breton. Up until today the ground was bare but tonight it is winter. One of my favourite sessions takes place tonight about 50 miles away but I am at home tonight wishing that I was there. Winter sucks!

My heart goes out to ye who what got snowed on in NS and CB, Sandy. It's positively lovely here and even tho I feel for ye I am glad it ain't me. Years ago I would have enjoyed such but, as I am almost at the senior's discount, screw that!

I have a naggin feelin that we are due for a bad one here. I recall one Easter after a calm winter back in the late 60s... started snowin on Thursday evening and we didn't venture out until Sunday. Couldn't see across the street for most of it.

Home, home on the range.
Where the deer and the antelope
get shot.

Paper targets, of course.

Not near as tastey, but PC.

I got antelope sausage in the freezer. Buffalo, too.

You're thinking about "moping" the floor? That's probably more difficult that mopping it, but to each his own.

I'm moping the floor over you,
I can't sleep a wink that is true.
I'm moping and I'm praying that my ennui breaks in two,
Moping the floor over you.

Lets go to the range tomorrow bro ... One of these days I will see if I can get us on a Military base range. I bet with the right call we could. It would fun to knock holes in some targets at 1000 meters with some military rifle I wanna shoot a 50 cal Barrett again even with the recoil barrel it still has a hell of a kick

depends on the terrain and the use Military ... long shots the 50 barret for sure but heavy bugger to lug around. Myself I like the 338 lapua. The old venerable .308 ain't bad either for swat teams. But I just knock holes in targets not people or Apes

right now I am cleaning a .380 Colt Government model .. and no I am not a war monger, just a target shooter that grew up with firearms. I am going to take it to the indoor range tomorrow. I can tack nails with that little firearm. Small caliber but colt designed it to function exactly like the 1911. Not your typical blow back design so very accurate. The police all want one for backup .. ya can't find them anymore under a grand. New they cost like 200 bucks but colt stop making them as the bad guys could conceal them too easy or so it was said.

That's why you sag to one side. Besides, the M1911 had its faults. Now, the M1911A1 -- THAT was a classic, especially with a good barrel bushing and a little tuning.

Now, IF I were to carry a concealed pistol I'd use my Beretta 7.65mm Tomcat. Since I ain't gonna get in any gunfights farther away than 10 feet I can use a Crumpled Weaver Stance and that'll take care of you. For a longer distance a .357 magnum single action revolver (say, my Ruger New Vaquero) would do just fine since anyone who knows anything fires a revolver single action anyway. For a long gun and longer ranges I prefer the venerable M-1 rifle -- can't beat it out to about 700 meters, only I can't even see that far much less hit anything. Yeah, the 7.62 x 51 NATO has a flatter trajectory, but I still like the M-1. You can keep the 5.56 cartridges -- use a .30 of some sort, why shoot twice? Of course, it it came down to REAL brass tacks I'll take my side-by-side double 12 with four-ought buckshot anytime. But like the man says, it depends on what I'm doing. For any all-around, easy to use, accurate long gun I'll take my 10 round Rossi Model 1892 lever rifle -- 10 255 grain lead bullets seem to have a calming effect on people who receive them, up to 150 meters or so.

Or find a new girlfriend (assuming you're single, I mean...).

Boredom can also be cured by finding a grizzly bear, sneaking up behind it (which ain't easy), and goosing it or grabbing it by the balls (if it's male) and yelling, "GOTCHA!"

If George Bush Jr had tried that in his younger years, we'd all have been spared a good deal of aggravation.

I can tote my $300 second hand Baikal full over modified 12 all day long on accounta the Ruskies know how to build a proper field shotgun (read... Brownings that cost $30k+ are shite). Light and just a dream to wield. Though they are not made for heavy game, knock a slug in the hole a the first one at 100m no sweat. Of course, that's maybe just me >;-)

As for hand pistols... I dunno anything about em and don't wanna.

Gee. I can't believe it's been near 10 years since I gave up hunting.

With others who've given up hunting, I don't either (not unless it's necessary to feed folks).

Wiener dogs will eat almost anything. But they won't eat raw onions. When our Rudi would beg too much in the kitchen and make a real pest of himself doing so, I'd finally get a piece of raw onion from the counter top and say, "Do you want this, Rudi?"

"YES! YES!" he'd say. (in dog language and gestures)

"Are you SURE you want it, Rudi!"

"YESSSSSSSS! I'M SURE! GIVE IT TO ME!"

"Are you all ready for it, Rudi?"

"DOES A BEAR SHIT IN THE WOODS? GIVE IT TO ME NOW!!!!!!!"

At which point I'd throw him the piece of raw onion. He would sieze it in midair and wolf it halfway down before realizing...

"GAK! EEEE-YUKKK! ARGH!" He'd spit it out on the floor and gaze at it in shock for a moment...then give me an accusatory and long-suffering look and tick-tack slowly off down the hall to the living room. (tick - tack - tick - tack - tick - tack)

THUNK! (flopping down on the rug)

"Groannnnnn..." (the weary sigh of a dog who's been had, yet again, by a human with a very twisted sense of humor)

I would have suggested another one of our favorite program types which has just surfaced but after watching the first two episodes of "Full Metal Jousting"............I can't. What a piece of crap ..................Think "Top Shot" but with assholes where everyone spends every episode shooting at a 200 yard target with a 30.06 while being whacked in the balls with a five iron. Repeat this over and and over. One episode is enough for a lifetime.

If I was all on my ownsome I think I would be getting out my big crochet needle and some wool. It sounds a womany thing to do but basic squares are so easy and pretty quick to make and in no time you could rustle up a couple of body warmers for the dogs or a blanket depending on how ambitious you get. Crochet is much less complicated than the casting on and off of knitting plus any mistakes can be easily covered up so at the end of it all you will end up with something. When I was weaning myself from cigarettes I took up crochet instead and it helped a lot.

Did you know that a cartridge case for a .45-70 is as tall as the neck of a .30-06 case, a .357 case is just a little over half the length of the .45-70, 7.65 mm is maybe a third of the length and a .22 LR is about a quarter of the length?

But if this sort of trivia still bores you, start reloading rimfires.

22 long? There's a way to liven things up. Take a buddy out to the woods. Take a hike in the fresh air. Bring some grub and make a cook fire. Throw a half dozen 22 longs in the coals. That'll beat the bordom, Tyler (a Never Cry Wolf reference... if you have never seen the movie... do see it. But, here's a tip. Just before Rosie asks, "How do you beat the bordom, Tyler?" he shuts the fuel to the engine off. If ya know what's goin on, the rest of the scene is hilarious.

Did you say 45/70? I used to hunt with one. It was a trap door model that my Uncle had.
I gave up hunting in 1982. Now we have Deer on the back lawn and I feed them instead of the other way 'round.

Ammo on open shelves? Machine pistols?

Yes. Yes. And Sam will let you RENT a fully automatic weapon (Uzi, Tommy gun, M-16A1, MP-5, etc.) when you RENT the use of his range after you BUY the ammo from him. Sam ain't stupid -- you know how fast a submachine gun (machine pistol) will eat up ammo in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it? Take a 9mm MP-5 -- the magazine holds 20 rounds and you can fire all 20 with a touch to the trigger. A box of 50 gives you 2.5 magazines...so you have to buy another box from Sam. In an hour of shooting the thing you pay, in USD: $15.00 for use of the range (assuming you have your own eye and ear protection; if not, Sam will sell it to you), $50 for the rental of the weapon, and probably $75 to $100 in ammunition (and Sam keep the fired brass and sells it). One hour: USD $140 to pretend you're b-a-a-a-a-a-a-d. Oh, yeah, you'll probably buy some targets from Sam, so add another $10.

You MUST by the ammo from Sam because he has to control the type of ammo used on the range -- no depleted uranium or .50 caliber tungsten-spike armor piercing or tracers or something.

Now about the range: Sam had it built to meet all safety and EPA specs up to .50 caliber Browning machine gun (no, you can't fire one there, but you CAN bring you .50 BMB rifle and buy the ammo from Sam and....). The local Cowboy Action Shooting group uses it. There are winter .22 pistol leagues. The local police departmentS use it, as does the local National Guard and Army Reserve units in winter.

Since this is the ONLY indoor range in about a 150 mile radius, Sam doesn't lose money on it....

And don't expect to get into the shop for a quick weapons grab -- it's hot-linked to the local cops (who are Sam's customers and friends), assuming you can get by the armored doors, high security locks, foil the hidden video and still cameras that cover the place inside AND out.... Oh, yeah -- the roof has also been rebuilt.

Ever shoot one Rap, those things are a hell of a lot of fun full auto. 9mm but you cut the target in half the firing rate is so high .. tends to creep up like all full autos do but a riot to fire. Gotta have an FFL licence to own one

Sam is full Class III, both at the store and personally. He has a tripod-mounted US Machine Gun, Caliber 50, M2 which came from a B-25 bomber and still has the aircraft sights on it in the foyer of his house. Got a Barrett or an Armalite AR-50? Sam's got one of each and he'll sell them to you.

Business man? You better believe Sam's a business man! He's also a PhD in Engineering and Thai-American -- his daughter is a West Point Graduate; Sam himself is a disabled US veteran as well as a veteran of the Thai Army.

By the way, my brother found and has cleaned up Ye Olde Family Tommy Gunne. He also is Ye Keeper of Ye Olde Family AK-47 (With Ye Olde Fulle Auto Functione). Why my Grandfather had a Tommy gun is beyond both of us, but then he also had a personal still (now in a museum) and a commercial still (destroyed by the sheriff 'cause Grandpa didn't pay the right people).

Shoot fully automatic weapons? Why goodness gracious me! Ah swan, Ah feel faint at the very thought! Let's see: 45 grease gun, tommy gun, M1919A6, M60, M2, BAR and perhaps one or two more, maybe.

You guys will be happy t' know that after I am elected it's gonna be a lot easier to acquire them automatic weapons. I plan to liberalize the acquisition of firearms and open new gunnery training schools all over the country so that people can learn the right way to handle their weapons. You don't want guns in the hands of folks who ain't got a clue how to use 'em, right? That could be dangerous.

Yeah, a lot of people put too much stock in guns and not enough in music. I gave up spraying lead around...now I try for accuracy, like putting the second bullet in the same hole in the paper target as the first. And truth be told, I like wild game meat but getting it at the store is a LOT more convenient.

The last couple of years I hunted I didn't. Just had the o/u 12 for defense while I inspected the fresh air. That was 6 or 7 years ago. Last time I fired "at" a an animal was to scare a 6p back into the woods on accounta I knew the lad I had sent down the road 200m just might try a shot at it. The girls I goes wit don't shoot small deer. AND, ricochets are the ricoshits. Either way, I didn't want to chance it.

We have a skunk roaming around our house. How about coming up here and live-trapping him (her?). Or maybe there are some where you are that you could pick up by the hind feet and crate them to take them to farther pastures. They say they can't spray if all their feet are off the ground. That, it seems to me, would be a challenge and a boredom-basher.

Shoot them (from a distance) in the head with .22. Or trap them. Tastes something like rat or squirrel. Or chicken. Everything tastes like chicken. My brother ate a spruce 2 x 4 once and said it tasted like chicken.

As far as survival, Dan, if there are skunks, there are far tastier and much less challenging critters around to eat.

Same here, Dan. I coulda easily taken two every year for many years but my old man taught me, if ya ain't gonna eat and it ain't a threat, ya don't kill it.

A buddy of mine from NFLD wanted to come here and get a black bear (we got some BIG ones) as I am a registered guide. I asked him why he wanted to kill a black bear. Rug. Even tho I know he would have eaten the meat, that was the wrong answer. I said "No." I could tell he was very POd but I didn't care. Just ain't right.

Ever meet up with any blackies? I met up with lots. Even have had to elude a few when they stalked me when I had no gun. After the last time, I always carried a gun. Nasty critters!

When traveling in the wilds you only need carry for protection what I carry: a Beretta Jetfire in .25 ACP. It has saved me from bears on a couple of occasions. Here's how it works: we're walking through the woods when we are attacked by a grizzly. I use the Jetfire the shoot you in the knee and then I calmly walk away.

I don't go down in the woods alone
'Cause I might get a surprise
I don't go down in the woods alone
'Cause I might not believe my eyes.
For all the bears that ever there were
Will be in those woods for certain because
If I'm there alone
The grizzlies will have a picnic.

Picnic time for grizzly bears,
The huge old grzzly bears will be having a lovely time that day.
Watch them, catch me unawares,
And see them picnic on their holiday.
See them gaily dance about.
They love to rip and shred
And never have any cares.
At six o'clock they'll head out to bed
Because they're sated huge old grizzly bears.

The worst/best story I ever heard was from a fella who, at about 70 years old, was pickin his way around a deadfall while trout fishin. He stepped on an old black log but it wasn't a log. The bear bolted and never came back but he ended up arse over tea kettle with a busted arm and had gotten a deadfall branch shoved in his leg. Lots a blood, but he made made it.
