Subject: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,Bill Amatneek Date: 26 Mar 12 - 02:04 AM Does anyone know the make and models of the guitars Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey played in Peter, Paul & Mary? And, they were both nyon-strung guitars, correct? MTIA. Best regards to all, Bill Amatneek |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Mar 12 - 03:57 AM Well we know from previous postings on here, that Paul Stookey also played a 12 string made by Nikos Apollonio. Although I don't know what else they played or who made them. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,loki Date: 26 Mar 12 - 08:09 AM Paul was usually on a classical and Peter on a dreadnought (Martin?) |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: Wesley S Date: 26 Mar 12 - 09:08 AM As I recall Peter played a slope shouldered Martin D with 12 frets clear of the body. A slot head model. I'm not sure what Paul played. In recent photos Peter has been seen playing a Larivee. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: PHJim Date: 26 Mar 12 - 08:40 PM In December 2000, Yarrow's Larrivee acoustic guitar was stolen while on an airplane flight. In early 2005, the guitar was spotted by fans on eBay. The guitar was recovered in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and returned to Yarrow. He did not press charges, as the person it was recovered from did not steal it. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: PHJim Date: 26 Mar 12 - 10:03 PM For their hits, Noel played a nylon string guitar made by the late Manouk Papazion of New York. He still owns it, but it stays at home. He now plays 14 fret classical guitars built by David LaPlante. Here's a previous thread about Paul's Apollo 12-string built for him by Nick Apollonio. He has at least two of these. Peter played a Martin D-28S (a 12 fret dreadnought) early in his carreer and a Gallagher dreadnought later on. He currently plays the Larrivee that was stolen. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: PHJim Date: 26 Mar 12 - 10:07 PM Sorry, I forgot to post the link. Paul on Apollo guitars |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: PHJim Date: 29 Mar 12 - 12:02 AM To the OP, are you the Bill Amatneek who played with the Greenbriar Boys? Did you play at the 1964 Mariposa Folk Festival at Toronto's Maple Leaf Stadium? |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,Bill Amatneek Date: 29 Mar 12 - 01:27 PM Yes I played with the Greenies at the first Philly folk festival, some 50 years ago. I don't believe I've played the Mariposa Folk Fest. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,Bill Amatneek Date: 29 Mar 12 - 01:34 PM So, Peter's D-28s, was it nylon strung? |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: PHJim Date: 30 Mar 12 - 01:02 AM The D-28S was built for steel strings, in spite of having a twelve fret neck and slotted headstock. I don't think these guitars would have a satisfactory sound strung with nylon strings, so I'd guess steel strings, but I couldn't swear to it. Bill, didn't you play bass with P,P&M as well? I guess you didn't pay attention to guitars back then. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,Bill Amatneek Date: 01 Apr 12 - 01:47 AM Well, I had a lot of biz to take care of on the bass. Noticing guitar strings was not where my attention was, I guess. So we can't pin down for sure whether Peter's D-28s was steel or nylon strung. Hmmmmm. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,sertw Date: 24 Nov 13 - 01:52 PM Peter's guitars were strung with steel strings. He may have tried silk and steel, but mostly steel strings. |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,Gene Date: 30 Nov 14 - 12:08 AM Well, I just watched the PPM 50 Year special on BPS. I sure can't tell for sure. I expect P&P must have supper finger strength if they are finger picking steel strings for entire concerts. Also just found out Mary & I share the same birthday. I knew there was something I loved about her! |
Subject: RE: Peter and Paul's guitars From: GUEST,MagicBob Date: 07 Dec 14 - 07:27 PM just watching ppm pbs program now. Paul's guitar def nylon strung. Peter must have been steel. These guys are awesome, both as musicians and peace activists. |
