Va. man charged with shooting guard at conservative group’s DC headquarters

WASHINGTON â€" A man accused of shooting a security guard at the Washington headquarters of a conservative lobbying group pleaded not guilty Friday to assault and handgun charges.

Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Herndon, Va., faces the possibility of decades in prison if convicted in last week’s attack inside the lobby of the Family Research Council. According to court documents, Corkins told the guard he didn’t like the group’s politics before opening fire with a semiautomatic handgun. Corkins was carrying dozens of rounds of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, according to the documents.

Corkins pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Friday afternoon. He also waived the right to a detention hearing, which meant that prosecutors did not have to present evidence to support his continued detention. He will be held without bond until his court appearance, which has not been scheduled but will likely occur before Oct 1.

Magistrate Judge Alan Kay also ruled during the hearing that Corkins was competent to understand the court proceedings and assist in his defense. Corkins underwent a psychiatric evaluation this week.

Corkins’ public defender declined to comment after the brief hearing. Corkins wore an orange jumpsuit and spoke only in response to questions from the judge. He did not appear to have any friends or relatives in the courtroom.

The FRC strongly defended Chick-fil-A after the fast-food chain’s president voiced his opposition to same-sex marriage. Corkins’ parents told investigators that he strongly supported gay rights, according to the documents. He had volunteered at a community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, although he was not well-known in Washington’s gay community.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the FRC as a hate group, saying that it has spread false propaganda against gays. Corkins was also carrying the contact information for another conservative group, the Traditional Values Coalition, according to that group’s president, who said she got that information from federal investigators.

The wounded man, Leo Johnson, has been released from the hospital, the FRC said in a statement Friday. Johnson is the building manager for the FRC’s headquarters. While he was performing security duties at the time of the shooting, he was not armed and not in uniform. He helped subdue the gunman after being shot in the arm, and the city police chief praised him for stopping an attack that could have turned deadly.

I can't imagine anyone here arguing for a moment with thc fact that he was a "left wing f***kwit with a gun". If you search far and wide enough, I'm sure you can find at least one other example that makes him "another". But if you can't add up the incidents from recent days, months, and years, and see which wing has been turning out the nuts with guns wholesale, and which wing's rhetoric has been toned to inflame them, you've been hiding a long way down under the rock.

The political persuasion of people who use guns to solve their "problems" isn't really cogent. It's the fact that whacked out idiots have guns in the first place. The only way the politics enter into it is, as has been noted, the fact that the right wing is the one that ensures that any loon can easily and legally get a gun.

To be fair, over the course of the last hundred years, the number of left wing and right wing fuckwits who've tried to prove their points by using guns and bombs is probably fairly even. It is not a sin or a sign of weakness to go for mental health help. It is a sign of strength of character and testament that you want to be a better person, which is a very admirable human trait. I do not understand why Bobert's words are so offensive to him. He should be honored to have someone repeat his words instead of angry.

Is there some sort of restriction on reminding people of what they said? Once you say something in public, it is public. Words have consequeces.

As far as the hatred thing goes, Bobert says hate more than anybody I have ever known. He makes hateful bigoted racist statements, projects them on other people and then accuses them of being racist, hateful and bigoted. Then he claims that the made up statement are proof that someone or a group of people are racist, hateful and bigoted but he can't say who said them or when. He manufactures his own evidence.

Please show me where I have ever said I hate anything or anybody.

Bobert calls me any name he can think of, bullying tactics, But The only names I have ever called him is racist, bigot, bully and blowhard. I arrived at these descriptions after reading and displaying his own words.

Bobert uses any words he wants to describe anyone he wants with nothing to back it up but his own opinions. But for some reason, no one can do the same to him. He accuses anyone who disagrees with him as being a stalker, bully, crazy etc. which is a lame effort to defend him from his indefensible public remarks.
