Just a note to let you know that Big Mick has been very ill over the last few days. He's slowly getting better. (I got a voice mail from him today and he sounds like he's improving.)

Maybe it was the oysters? Maybe we worked him too hard in the kitchen? Either way.. I think he could do with our good wishes at this time.

Hope you're taking it easy Mick....

But seriously, Mick, we miss your insights!!! Be well, sir.

Now ain't this a bitch? I figure the simple ass has been busy cause I knew that he had a party and a gig and couldn't make the meet with El Swanno......So the insomnia sets in and I check the e-mail just now and I get this note that scares the crap out of me at first. Then I read on and see that things are better and not so bad...a severe sinus is infection is a pain in the ass (if that's where your sinuses happen to be, as in Mick's case), but at least its not what he first feared. On the plus side, he will be through here soon and we'll finally get together!

And the Fair One has already got a thread going, which was what I was about to do. Alison has been busy doing wash since her underwear supply has been so severely depleted by Alan of Oz and his preference for dressing in drag. Everybody was so helpful in getting Cletus a new pair of longhandles, maybe we need to get Alan some u-trou of his own in a larger size since he's ruining Alison's. But I digress...........

So Mick my friend...get well NOW. And BTW...If you ever fear you are having a stroke or something again, CALL A FOCKIN'SQUAD!!! Don't drive to the ER. I KNOW exactly the feeling... Oh Yeah....."I'll just drive myself, it'll be OK....I'm not all that bad."...... Been there. Done that. Dumb shit. No shit!!!!!!!!!

AND THAT GOES FOR THE REST OF YOU TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In any case, get well brother....I think you damn near gave Rick a heart attack!!! And then where would I be? I got no album comin' out to write a "Rick's Rag" for, ya' know?

Spaw

I second Leej's wish for a quick "return to blustering ruddy Mickness," your royal Mickness. I'll try to add a bit of my good wishes to Kat's psychic stream, buddy, not being blest with the gift myself. If laughter is truly medicinal, don't miss the BS: Possum Arrives thread. It should be truly therapeutic.

Dear Mick--

Just because they invite you to "take a snort of Irish malt" doesn't mean you suck it up your nostrils. I'd a thought you'd a known better than that, bein' of Irish extraction and all. If you inhale whiskey, it infects your sinuses and can lead to nosebleed. You "SWALLOW IT," *then* snort! Got that?

Get well quick. You're missed.

Hello, my friends,

It has been a tough couple of days.

For those who were at the Getaway, you may remember that I would just start sweating for no reason. No fever, but would just start sweating. Turns out that if I had a damn brain, I would have recognized what the symptom was. But the good feelings were so thick that weekend that one couldn't feel sick if they wanted to. All this past week I was feeling not quite up to snuff, but on Thursday, as I was getting dressed for the day, I felt a sinus headache coming on. It very quickly progressed to a piercing pain, blurred vision, nausea and weakness. I called the Dr. and tried to explain that I thought it was the worst feckin' sinus headache and they indicated that it sounded more like a stroke and get to Emergency Room as quick as possible. Now, I dealt with dying a long time ago, and it doesn't scare me. But the thought of sittin in a chair, helpless while 'Spaw and Rick dance around screwing with me and laughing hysterically (You know, "hey tough guy, what ya going to do now? Here, Big Mick, let's see what you look like with a squash in your ear and a spud up yer arse......." kind of stuff) scared the hell out of me. Well anyway, to make the long story shorter, they got me in and performed all sorts of very rude tests and determined that I had not had a stroke. NO SHIT!!!!! They gave me a load of some very good drugs and sent me home many hours later. I woke up the next morning to the realization, while they had told me what it wasn't, they had not told me what it was. And it was starting again. I called my Dr. (a lovely WEE man) and indicated to him that it is in the best interests of all concerned that I not be scared AND hurt, and would he mind putting that amazing talent of his to work figuring out what the hell is wrong. He figures it is a massive sub something kind of sinus infection. I am on massive antibiotics, allergy meds, and some sort of nasal inhalant. So, the world goes on, the infection seems to be responding to the regimen. And I have to head on the road with my traveling medicine show.

Which reminds me. Are there any 'Catters in the Cincinnatti area? I will be in a hotel there on Wednesday night and could probably get away for some music that night.

Thanks to all my dear friends here for the well wishes. It is not over, probably won't be for a while. But it is made easier for your presence.

And Mr. Foster........cute, real cute. I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery..............LOL. Have fun while I am down a bit, but expect a rigorous battle for the hand of THE FAIR ONE as I recover. And sorry to hear that you have to swipe those undies..........if you work a bit on your technique, they will be given freely. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......Sorry, ladies, a bit of testosterone flowing there......

All the best,

Big Mick

Well, Mick, when you get to be as old as YOU are, some of those little things become far more of a nuisance. I am glad that it is/was only a major nuisance and not more serious. It is good to hear that things are improving. Say hi to "Pigtown" when you get there. I travel out that way from time to time to visit a friend in that neck of the woods. I'll try to check with him and see what he's up to Wednesday.

Hey, big guy, you're not supposed to get sinus infections.. that's my department!! I still have the effects of a year-long sinus infection that came from letting what I thought was a "cold" go too far without going to a doctor. So much for saving money on medical bills. It took a year of heavy duty antibiotics, so, man, I hope this doesn't happen to you. Now I will live with the tendency to get them forever. As you know, it hurts your brain and makes thinking very fuzzy, as well as general body weakness. No fair, man, you were supposed to be the big strong guy all of us ladies could lean on!

Well, enough of that mutual misery mumbling... get better, and email me privately for advice on the home remedies and preventions I've discovered.

love,
alice

Oooh, those sinus deals are brutal. Sorry to hear it. If you don't get better soon, cut off your nose and learn to breathe through your mouth. It's a quick fix (*BG*)

I hear that alcohol kills germs in your bloodstream. I've replaced my former regimen of echinacea and zinc with a steady diet of beer and wine, and I've never felt better (except for the mornings but I've never liked those much anyway).

Seriously, breathe well and feel better.

So, Mick, you should take better care of yourself. As Catspaw intimated, it's time to throw that macho stuff out the window. I know that that big heart shines on these threads, but let it shine on you sometime.

So you're sick and you think you're strokin' out. Yeah, that's what ambulances are for. I'm sure Dave would have picked you up if you had only called down to 'Spaw's place. And now, you're headed for Cincinnati and you not only want to work, but you want to go out to the music while you are there.

Modern medecine works miracles, but you don't have to force them to be miracle workers. Slow down a bit! Come to the important realization that you can't do it all. You will live longer and less stressfully.

Seriously, Mick. I'm sorry you had that scare. I don't do sick very well either. I'll put you in my prayers.

Love,

Roger in Baltimore

Hey Big Mick. Big Hugs! I've been missing you around these parts. Take very good, tender care of yourself (just pretend you're one of your best friends kinda like Spaw). As so many of our buddies have said earlier in this thread, when you're sick is no time to be a hero. Whimper a lot and get people to take care of you. Wallow in being coddled by anyone willing to coddle you. (No, not cuddle, although now that I mention it...) Get well soon, my friend. (And you'd better be ALL better by the first weekend in December, when I intend to traipse down to Conklin to hear you and the fellas hold forth at Fenian's and collect on that brew you promised.) Get well, honey bunny. (And how yucky rotten to have to be in a motel room when you're sick. I did that last year -- strep and bronchitis in Washington D.C., then taking the airplane back looking obviously sick. Nothing like that to make you feel like a complete pariah....)

I hope you're all mended up by now and feeling sassy again.

best, ww

Mick, I think I read this in the Berkeley Barb, a Vietnam Era underground newspaper: it's the hippy's cure for the flu: Toke up, crawl into a sleeping bag with your girlfriend, make love, go to sleep; when you wake up, start the whole process over and over and over. In three days your flu will be gone (of course it's usually gone in three days, anyway, but you don't usually enjoy it). I suppose the original also said something about replenishing body fluids as needed, and I don't recommend peeing in your sleeping bag, not if you're going to stay in it for three days...

I just read this thread. I am glad you are on the mend Mick. If the world ever needed good Union blokes it is now! Take care of yourself and don't overdo it until you are better.

Mick, I still liked the hugs, even the damp ones. I'm sending mental hugs your way, and a big bowl of virtual chicken soup. Please devote yourself to yourself with the same passion you devote to your job and your music.

Barry, do you know what a 'yobo' is? Did something happen at the Getaway you're not talking about? I knew you guys liked each other, but I never suspected...

jaysus, Big Guy, hurry up and get over the crud. I've been vicariously medicating for you and don't know how much longer my liver can hold out. Tried to do the "seven nights drunk" therapeutic regimen, but had to give up after only four. Maybe there's some other catters than can do the full week for you. A pint and a jimmy, that's the ticket.

I too am glad that I found out that you were getting well before I found out that you were not. Keep up the improving trend (usually that does involve rest) and get back to the tavern before they do something rash about the dress code. You just sit back and give me instructions and I'll do the seafood. POSSUMS IN THE SHRIMP!!!!

Get well soon.

Have we talked you into feeling better, yet, Mick? Or should we send you some oysters?

LOL, Mary

My God, but how I love you folks. I have been trying to rest, and work and this illness is driving me nuts. And tomorrow I do indeed have a 6 hour drive to a place that I am going to meet up with 'Spaw for dinner. Would you folks call the Municipal Authorities and have them put on an extra cruiser tomorrow?? Thanks.

I am trying to get better, and I will get caught up on my 'Cat duties this weekend, I promise......And Susan, would you mind icing those shrimp down real well?? thanks.

Your good wishes are making me feel very good. I really do love you all.

Mick

Jeri, do you know something about 'yobo' that I don't? Where I come from, yob is backslang for boy. The final o in yobo (more often spelled yobbo) is added 'cos it sounds better.

Backslang is used in England by shop keepers, especially butchers and to a lesser extent grocers. It is used so that the customers don't know what they are saying. Because of supermarkets, butchers and grocers are dying out, and backslang is dying with them.

The term yobbo is derogatory and most often used to mean layabout. Except of course when it is used as a term of endearment by the likes of Barry.

Bert.

Barry, don't read this. I know you meant it the way Bert explained it. I never knew about that meaning before, so thanks, Bert, for the info.

A 'yobo' (pronounced yoe-boe) in Korea, at least as the term is used by American GIs, refers to a 'live-in girlfriend.' It was never very clear to me whether this was a relationship or a profession. I've heard married partners refer to each other by that term, to them it probably means 'honey' or 'darling-dumpling-sugar-plum.' I don't know which usage came first. A bit of totally uncalled-for information: Koreans don't call each other by their names, but rather by their positions/titles. A man would normally call his wife by the Korean word for wife. Men in general are called 'adashi,' which as near as I can tell is a word that means 'man' respectfully, like 'sir.'

I'm glad I asked now. I've learned something.

A friend of mine once said that "a day that goes by without you learning something new is a day that you've wasted".

Now, Mick. You've not been well. I am counting on you to show restraint in your consumption of the vile black stuff when you meet with Spaw. It would be a damn fine example for him as well. If you just can't restrain yourself.. well then have one or two for LEJ!
