Fantastic! I'll be singing it this weekend as I had it on my Xmas songs list.

Happy Xmas

Aye, well I did it, and it went down well. But some did say it would have been tasteless to do it 2 days after Lennie had died. 2 weeks + is seemingly OK!

Ok, I'm weakening: just copied the words and off to a session tonight. Watch this space!

Len had a wicked sense of humour and I think he would be happy with us celebrating his life and work, rather than mourning.

Peace and Love

My grip is fine thanks. I'll sing some of Lennie's originals this year, and that one next.
I'm a great admirer of Jez Lowe's work and good parodies in general, but please don't slate me for expressing a valid opinion.
Happy Christmas to you too.

Julia - That is fantastic! Many thanks.

Tattie - get a grip. Songs are for singing and the best way to keep Len's oeuvre alive is to sing it as often as possible, even parodies. I'm sure Len will/did smile at the use of the tune and the wittiness of the lyrics.

Happy Xmas

Ok, it's pretty good, but while I might sneakily download the words for future use, I'll probably stick to the original for this one! Still too soon after.

Subject: Lyr Add: AUNTIE JULIA (Mike Danver Scott)
From: GUEST,Julia L
Date: 22 Nov 16 - 10:54 PM

From Mike Danver Scott's 2012 blog

AUNTIE JULIA

It's Christmas day the family who came to dinner stayed for tea
and my digestive system feels peculiar.
We've pulled the crackers, read the jokes, then on her fourteenth rum and coke,
granny said, "Let's all sing Hallelujah".
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-u-jah.

I've heard it sung so many times, that litany of dodgy rhymes,
it's even sung by Natalie Imbruglia.
We get up to verse nine or ten, then you suggest we start again,
but I'm afraid I had to overrule yah.
Overrule yah, overrule yah, overrule ya, overru-u-u-u-u-ule yah.

The gift I gave you was quite nice, but you had got the same thing twice,
I've still got the receipt, I'll post it to yah.
At Christmas we must show we care, and that's the reason I must wear
this cardy knitted by your Auntie Julia.
Auntie Julia, Auntie Julia, Auntie Julia, Auntie Ju-u-u-u-u-ulia.

When Leonard heard my Christmas song, it didn't take him very long,
to figure out that this was Hallelujah,
he 'phoned his lawyer straight away, said "Get a letter off today,
tell him Mr. Cohen's gonna sue yah".
Gonna sue yah, gonna sue yah, gonna sue yah, gonna sue-u-u-u-u-ue yah

Pine needles dropping off the tree, whilst I am absentmindedly,
beginning to peel my thirty-first satsuma.
At Christmas I get overwrought, but even so I never thought,
that I would wind up singing Hallelujah.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu-u-u-u-u-u-jah.

Hmm, while I love parodies in general, I don't think I'd be wanting to sing this right now, just when one of my greatest heroes has so recently departed this world. Ask me again in a couple of years' time, maybe: and show a little respect?

Sounds like "Auntie Julia" by Mike Danvers Scott to me. Mike is a fantastic, funny song writer!

Thanks Jim. Jez sang it himself in concert last year. It may be on his album "Cauld feet Again, Pet". I can't find a track listing for this album anywhere to check.

It was all about Xmas and included receiving presents from "... Aunty Julia" and one verse was about receiving a CD of ".. Natalie Imbruglia"

Cheers

Mike

Subject: Lyr Add: SANDY SCREW YA (Sandler parody of Cohen)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 18 Nov 16 - 07:14 PM

I found this parody that Adam Sandler sang, accompanied by Paul Shaffer on piano (who also "echoed" a few words on some choruses) at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of "12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief," on December 12, 2012. This article in Rolling Stone implies it was the first ever parody of "Hallelujah."

My transcription from YouTube:

SANDY SCREW YA
Words by Adam Sandler, music by Leonard Cohen, "Hallelujah"

The terror of the hurricane,
The unforgiving wind and rain—
New York, the world held its breath as the storm took it to ya,
But you've been knocked down in the past,
Taking shots they thought would last,
But you always get right up shouting "Hallelujah!"

Hallelujah!
Sandy, screw ya.
We'll get through ya,
'Cause we're New Yorkers.

Yeah, New York, you've dealt with crap before,
Like squeegee men and tunnel whores,
And restaurant delivery bikin' right through ya.
They'll puke on your stoops ev'ry Sunday morn,
Times Square losin' all its porn,
Original Ray's Pizza closin' too, ya.

But hallelujah! (Hallelujah!)
Sandy, screw ya! (Screw ya!)
We'll get through ya (We'll get through ya)
'Cause we're New Yorkers.

'Cause we believe this too shall pass,
Like when Sanchez fumbled into an ass,
And during the playoffs, A-Rod telling girls in the crowd, "I wanna do ya."
The Mets have sucked since eighty-six.
Isaiah tried to ruin the Knicks.
But now Jason Kidd and the boys can freakin' school ya.

Hallelujah!
Sandy, screw ya!
We'll get through ya,
'Cause we're New Yorkers.

The bedbug scare of two-thousand-ten,
The Lohans getting busted again and again,
The lady who said she was a man right after she blew ya (sorry, that was just me!),
Trump's comb-over always makin' us sick,
The congressman who tweeted his dick,
The mayor's ban of thirty-two-ounce Mountain Dew-ya.

Hallelujah! (Hallelujah!)
Sandy, screw ya! (Screw ya!)
We'll freakin' kung-fu ya (kung-fu ya),
'Cause we're New Yorkers.

And Jersey, you've taken your share of hits:
The situation only showin' his tits,
The Turnpike Exit Thirteen stinkin' like poo-ya.
You lost the Nets and now they're good,
But we're still the Hudson brotherhood.
Together we'll give Sandy a big fugooya.*

Hallelujah! (Hallelujah!)
Connecticut too, ya (too, ya).
We'll get through ya (we'll get through ya),
'Cause we're New Yorkers.

* Fugooya = my phonetic spelling. I'm sure he meant "fuck-you, ya" but he seemed to deliberately slur it.

I'd love to help you, but I haven't heard the song myself, and I can't identify it from this list at Jez Lowe's website. Any idea what the title might be? Or what album it's on? Or who else besides Jez Lowe might have sung it or recorded it? Or can you remember where you heard it? Can you quote any lyrics at all? I'm pretty good at finding things, but I need something more to go on.

It seems the word "Hallelujah" doesn't appear at Jez's website at all, and Leonard Cohen is mentioned only once. ("The Parish Notices" is said to be "so sad that even Leonard Cohen was depressed when he heard it.")

Does anyone know the lyrics to Jez Lowe's Xmas song which parodies Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah (or rather uses the tune)?

Thanks in advance
