This melody is related to another tune but I can't remember which one.

I think it sounds as much like
She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain [When She Comes]

Hi Jim - Terry McDonald and I were bugged by a similar thought a little while ago and Terry realised that it's the tune from Peggin'Awl/ Peg and Awl.....

Jim Moray sang 'Peggin Awl' or 'Peg and Awl' at a gig in Blandford, Dorset two or three years ago and it kept nagging away at me that I knew that tune from another song. It took ages to make the connection with Down Below.'

It may be derivative but it is all wrapped up in bacon rind.

But at least it wasn't a thing you can't find

Flanders and Swann's compact-disc package, "Hat- Trick,"
features Donald Swann at the piano,
before a Canadian audience,
singing "Down Below" by himself
to warm applause.

After which Michael Flancers rolls forward in his wheelchair
and takes over the compére duties again, with:

"A memorable performance, my dear chap.
How nice for you to know
That long after you're dead
We shall still be thinking
Of you, singing 'down below'....."
