There doesn't seem to be a way in to the Spotify server in the same way there is to the BBC iplayer, in order to download music files. Even if you pay for Spotify, you cannot download files of the music - it can only be recorded to your PC in real time.

You can download anything from Spotify if you are premium account holder but you can only ever play those downloads using Spotify as they are DRM protected.

I use i-sound for win7 which records to file in flac lossless format. But it’s in real time, so there ought to be a trick for downloading from Spotify using ffmpeg or youtube-dl .

Um, not wishing to seem a stickler here, but this last idea sounds very much like piracy to me- if you're listening to something on Spotify, the rights holder gets paid each time you stream the track (a pittance, but still...) if you're downloading the song in a way they don't wish you to do, there will be no record of how much you play the song from that download. Unless you own the phonorecording copyright (the circled P symbol) and the Song copyright if it's not traditional, you should just bite the bullet and pay the 99 cents for a legal download.

I'm a very occasional (free) Spotify user and wondered what format they stream in. According to a couple of people on this reddit thread it's ogg/vorbis, but encrypted.

tl/dr: You can't rip it (i.e. save it in real time without recoding) but only record it (i.e. decode it and re-encode it).

DaveRo I read somewhere that the free Spotify stream is ogg vorbis at 192kbps which is, guestKristoffer Ross, a very lossy format and thank you for your pontification!!!

No doubt a solution will surface to download and extract DRM protection.

With Spotify, the artists get something like .0006p per stream. But Bonzo’s like~ no way dude, they don’t deserve even that.

The fix for that on iOS was posted Steve Shaw:
Settings, general, keyboard, then turn off smart punctuation.

Well, not from 'anywhere', but from somewhere that uses these curly quotes.

And on a desktop you can fix the problem using Firefox or Chrome and my Mudcat Browser Tools addon.
