Senoufou, not my own idea - I know people who did this; they couldn't be bothered having a load of cupboards and empty dishwashers into them, so just installed two dishwashers. Works like a dream!

What a good idea Thompson! Or I could fashion a little green card on a string, to hang on the machine when it's been emptied. If the card isn't there, he'd know the stuff inside is still dirty.

Lucy Worsley is a fine broadcaster, but heavens, she's nationalistic - the way she thrills out the words 'Bwitish' and 'Pwotestant' gives me the icy chills.

You need a second dishwasher, Senoufou, so that one can be filling with dirty dishes (that's the one with the red Post-it), and the other emptying of clean dishes (that's the one without a Post-it). When one is full and the other empty, the dirty-dishes one is switched on, and then the Post-it is switched.

I do apologise Bonzo for this thread derailment. We seem to have forgotten all about the Scandalous Lady Worsley.

I've developed a habit of stockpiling items in our house, as I have a fear of forgetting to buy more. We now have enough toilet rolls to cope with a dysentery outbreak in the entire village. And enough cat food to feed every cat in the UK.

I too forget where I left my specs, and my husband has an annoying habit of running up to me clutching them in his hand and smirking.
But he's just as bad. He forgets to empty the dishwasher, then puts dirty stuff in it along with the clean and it all gets washed again.

One deadly thing is putting down your glasses and forgetting where. And without the glasses you are stymied spotting them. Until you sit on them. Failing Memory and fading sight conspire against you. (I've learned to have a pair of glasses set aside for that situation. If I can remember where I put them...)

But I forget what we were talking about. As have the rest of us I see...

Hahaha Big Al and Jim, I'm glad I'm not the only one.
We tell each other it's this awful winter; it feels as if we're almost in a state of semi-hibernation.

We're going to take a good look at Easton's coach-trip brochure later today and choose a date for the trip to Hampton Court.

Try replacing your "Morrisons" (we don't have them in Ireland) experience to wandering around the house for an hour looking for a book that's stuck in your back pocket

We decided to make a special trip to Morrisons in Fakenham to get a joint of their gorgeous British topside of beef; they're the best price around. When we arrived in the pouring rain, we were sidetracked by all the lovely Easter stuff (flowers, chocolate goodies, hot cross buns etc) and bottles of Shloer for only £1.
Suddenly we both stopped in our tracks, looked at each other and almost simultaneously asked, "What was it we came here for?" We couldn't for the life of us remember, so we went up and down the aisles hoping whatever 'it' was would catch our eye. Luckily the meat area had the topsides of beef displayed as a 'special'.
I felt a wave of relief that my husband is as forgetful as I am. And his beard, which he's decided to grow again, is now pure white. Good!

"You told me that the other day."
Join the club
There was a story circulating around Liverpool some years ago
A man was having trouble with his memory, so he goes to sa specialist and i "told, I have bad news and I have good news"
"tell me anyway", says the man
"Well", he said, the bad news is you have Alzheimer's - the good news is you won't remember I told you this when you walk out the door"
The Seán Nós singer, Joe Heaney once told us over a coffee in a tatty cafe at Euston Station, "Nowadays it takes me all night to do what I used to do all night"
I know what he meant!

it got a lot of panning but i liked the tudors as well.

when you go to the tower of london, you're not allowed in the bell tower from where Robert Wyatt watched the executions of Anne Boleyn and her alleged lovers, and wrote his poem Around the Throne the Thunder Rolls. The tower is the one as you go in toyour right - just before the traitor's gate.

No Jim, I'm the one who had the senior moment. The title Burning Bright should have made me twig it was Blake (Tyger tyger...) Sorry about that!

Isn't it just awful when one's mind goes AWOL? I started telling my neighbour something yesterday and she looked at me pityingly and said, "You told me that the other day."   Gah!

'Visions of the Daughters of Albion' - very strange and, with its sexual imagery, way before its time.

Oooh thank you for that suggestion Bonzo! I often get him history books for Crimbo. He knows more than me now. His interests are Geography, History and Politics. It's a crying shame he never had any education to speak of in Africa. My sister and I reckon he could have got as far as a PhD if he'd been born in UK.

Big Al, we're definitely going to Hampton Court some day soon. A coach firm near us, Easton's, does excellent day trips to various historical places near London (That's how we got to the Tower) Their brochure has Hampton Court in it, and it's very reasonably priced (includes entry).

I did consider a Kindle, but I do love an actual book. And I get pleasure from scouring boot sales for literary treasures.

Senoufou - your good husband might find Struggle For Mastery In Europe From 1848 To 1918 by AJP Taylor interesting. This was my A level history text book in early 1960s, which I re-read last year, and is a fascinating take on British foreign policy during that period!

By the way - you MUST do Hampton Court.

At the entrance theres these statues of griffons or unicorns or something - the opening shots of A Man for All Seasons. Theres so much to see you can't take it all in in one visit.

John Milton played the organ in the royal chapel - mind blowing!

i got the Mantels on Kindle.

My eyes are a bit rubbish compared to how they used to be. On kindle you can make the print big, the books don't fall apart and you can get someone to read to you, if you want.

the only thing is - you can't pass a good book onto a friend. but that also means that you can't lose them, and you can take all your library on holiday with you, plus you can read with the lights off.

its just this passing on thing that's a bit of a pisser. take this bloke who wants the scandalous miss Worsley. if we were all still using vhs, we could all do a copy for him. my vhs machine chews up tapes.

Ah Big Al, 'Wolf Hall' and 'Bring Up The Bodies' were so gripping and I read them so much the books are now falling to bits! Also the BBC drama 'Wolf Hall' was really well done, very sinister.

My husband is absolutely obsessed with English history, and Henry V111 fascinates him. We've visited the Tower of London, but have yet to go to Hampton Court. (I went as a girl, but not in the last fifty years)

I reckon you're right about the history in England being rather taken for granted. Here in Norfolk, Castle Acre for example dates back to 1090, yet it's all very low-key.
And our many Norfolk medieval churches, around 635 still standing, are just 'there' but not particularly vaunted.

I think Lucy Worsley could be quite a sassy lady; she has a very naughty twinkle in her eye.

We undersell things in this country. i remember looking up the castle in Old Bolingbroke (Old or New Bolingbroke - I can't remember) in Lincolnshire. The castle was in ruins with sheep grazing on it. If the yanks had a castle where a king was born that Shakespeare had written three plays about, there would a theme park there.

As Derek Brimstone was wont to remark - The Yanks really got done at the Alamo, but they still had to sing about it, cos they haven't got much history. If we'd had the Alamo, we'd have tried to forget it.

If I hadn't been looking up Lucy Worsley's dress on Wikipedia, i doubt I would ever have known about Bolsover Castle. Bloody Dennis Skinner wouldn't have mentioned it. Oh by the way, we've got a castle....

I keep going to Hampton Court. Since reading Hilary Mantel, can't get the place out of my mind. Apparently. LW works out of there. The bloke who was showing me round the Royal Chapel, says Lucy's a common sight going up and down the corridors - a bit like the ghost of Catherine Howard.

Interestingly Lucy was for several years the curator at Bolsover Castle - so presumably she's mates with Dennis Skinner. I lived just down the road in Selston - I never even knew Bolsover had a castle.

I dated a young lady of English extraction who I quite fancied. Her 'set' of young English extracted fellow college students, male and female quite liked a slightly older friend of hers, a very nice intelligent young lady who was not unattractive but to my Yankee mind was a little bit 'horse faced' meaning nothing very horrible just a bit elongated the way, you know. I quite preferred my young lass's more round faced gamin look and came to the conclusion that Brits had slightly different dimensional demands than Americans. I wish I could say I came up with a theory I was able to prove, but I was at an age of high testosterone and low impulses. I vaguely wondered if the facial peculiarities of the Queen (God bless her) were influential, but again, how was I to put this to a test, other than remark on the physiognamies of popular stars on either side of the pond.
I don't think this is any more sexist than females of both sides of the pond comparing say, Hugh Jackman with Brad Pitt, Jack Hawkins with John Wayne, Rowan Atkinson with David Spade...

As to Lucy Worsley. I don't consider her much to look at, and her speech impediment reminds me of Bashar Assad, but she's an example of someone who can transmit sexual appeal on infrared, right through the tube. (Maybe these new flat screens are more advanced than they let on, and can outgas pheromones).

She could just make history up in her head and spout nonsense and I'd lap it up like a cat with a dish of half-and-half in front of me. She could say something like: "And Henry VII's eighth wife turned out to be the aunt of Henry VIII's seventh wife and both showed signs of alien implants which is why the Tudor line were known for their third eyes." and I'd just nod and drool.
