I thought that about the 3 Orchestra parts. Tried printing, chopping and sellotaping, but because of the way some bars were stretched to fit a line it wasn't very satisfactory.

Best workshop so far - on Zoom of course - IMHO - was yesterday's Swedish Tunes from Vicki Swan. Music sent out in advance for those of us who are not so quick on the ear-learning, and taken at a pace OK for ear-learners too. Nice tunes too!
But must also mention the Festival Orchestra with Carol Dawson and Steve le Voguer: lots of work gone into that, and some nice tunes to play.If I have one suggestion to make for the future, it would be good to put all 3 concert pitch parts on one stave so that we can see how it all fits together - which could be done on 1-2 pages. Yes, there is a full score, but using that would involve far too much page-turning!
And also enjoyed May Cheadle's slow session today: knew all but one of the tunes, but good to be playing them slowly rather than never quite catching up!

Usually see the heather on the moors going down to Whitby. Did walk near Bilsdale mast but much heather still to bloom this year.

Seems odd to be doing Whitby with gardening between events instead of hill running. And I always felt the need for timetravel to fit everything in. Last night didn't need to stay up and heard the Wilsons while half asleep, watched them this morning.

The first pub I ever frequented as a regular (aged 17.75) was the Providence, a town centre place close to the railway station in Hull. Actually in St Stephens Square.
The Landlady Kate and her sister ran the place and the bar (men only) was well used seven days a week by locals. The lounge was usually quiet except on weekends and was the only room a lady was allowed to drink in.
The predominant drink was Hull Brewery Mild and in fact myself and a bargee were the only regular Bitter drinkers. I recall that mild was 1/- (one shilling) a pint and the bitter 1/2 (one and tuppence). The year after I started drinking beer Selwyn Lloyd in an attempt to bribe the working class reduced beer by tuppence a pint so all of a sudden an extra pint was within reach for the drinking man.
At the time there was an old (to me) chap who every evening came in for a drink. Kate would pull him his first pint and place it on the bar. He would look at it and ask “Can you get a whisky in there?” Kate would answer “Yes, I reckon so”. “Well fill the bloody thing up then”. This went on every time he was there.

Did the Glaisdale trip fr the first time last year, by train from Whitby (so no driving either): thoroughly enjoyed it.

About now would have been the Glaisdale sing, originated by Nick and continued last year by Malcolm. Last year the first two pints were £3-50 a go but the next was £4-50. (says last years diary)

Prices even better in the various club premises that are used as Whitby Folk Festival venues, though of course the pubs should be (and are) supported well. What I would prefer is for the Spa to sell some better wine, from a bottle, not those pre-packed mini-cups with peel-off tops.

It's harder to ask for a "top up" if you don't quite get a full pint these days as you aren't supposed to wander around or up to the bar without really good reason. Many bars have table service only and the waiter (or bar person) who serves you is having a hard enough job too.

I have noticed in recent years that the pubs now all give short measure by using the sparklers with pint to brim glasses rather than pint to line. Prices all seem OK for 0.9 of a pint though.

My parents retired to Torbay. Compared with that Whitby is dirt cheap for icecreams etc (couldn't comment on beer prices).

Johnny J - Yes it is a Yorkshire thing.
I remember Tich Frier saying that he discovered when he lived in Yorkshire when it came to being "careful" with money the Scots were rank amateurs compared to the inhabitants of God's own county.

Dick - despite our occasional differences and because of our mutual support on things that really matter - it would be good to meet up sometime somewhere - and it's not just the offer of a PINT! although that might be a factor!!!!!!!!!

I thought everything was reasonably priced in Whitby. Much cheaper than larger cities and most other tourist destinations.

quite a few Folkies were at Sidmouth. It keeps the B&B booking going year on year. There were sessions on the front and apparently at one pub that has an outdoor covered area.

We did a lot of walking.

Just been in Friendship today, first time since we closed down the Folk Club on 19th April, spoke to Dave the the manager of the Rowing Club and this is what we decided.                                 WHITBY FOLK CLUB will hopefully be running a NON-SING SOCIAL SESSION
in the Harbour FRIENDSHIP ROWING CLUB during WHITBY NON-FOLK WEEK 2020 Monday 24th August to Friday 28th August Between 1pm & 3pm daily   
We will be pleased to see our old friends as usual, for a natter and catch up.The Friendship Committee and Boris permitting!
