In Olney, Claire meets local experts who reflect on the life of John Newton, from his early years of debauchery as a sailor and then as a slave trader to his later life as a dedicated clergy man, hymn writer and abolitionist. Claire hears how a moment of epiphany at sea sparked a deep Christian that faith helped him to realise the full horror of his actions and compelled him to spend the rest of his life serving others and striving to abolish the evil of slavery. Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: GerryM Date: 28 Apr 22 - 12:29 AM DEM NAYNTN YANUAR [Ninth of January] “Dem Nayntn Yanuar [Ninth of January],” a Jewish folk song that references the Bloody Sunday March of 1905, was originally collected by ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovsky. Eléonore Weill, vocalist and flutist for new-traditional klezmer band Tsibele, composed and arranged a new melody for the band. “Dem Nayntn Yanuar” is on Tsibele’s album It’s Dark Outside – Indroysn iz Finster. Translation: “On the ninth of January we wept and wailed As they took our brothers from the stock exchange to the jail Soon as we got there, we all took a vow: “Brothers and sisters, don’t be afraid of any jails Come out of the jails to awaken the people, Come out of the jails with bombs and dynamite. Destroy the tyrants who are sucking our blood. “They suck our blood like it’s the best wine The czar and the government should go to hell– And they will. “When someone yelled: Jews, Muslims, and Christians, We responded with: Down with Capitalism! Then we, the workers, will raise our heads. The world will be renewed, when we, the workers, are free.” Tsibele is a new-traditional klezmer band based in Brooklyn, NY. Tsibele emphasizes Klezmer’s relationship to regional musical genres and dialects by drawing from the Jewish music of Romania and Moldova, 19th century secular Yiddish folk songs from Eastern Europe, and contemporary folk and improvised music. The band includes Zoë Aqua (violin), Eva Boodman (trumpet), Zoe Guigueno (bass), Hannah Temple (accordion) and Eléonore Weill (wooden flutes and vocals). And the title SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY has been used more than once. U2, Songwriters: Adam Clayton / Larry Mullen / Dave Evans / Paul Hewson : I can't believe the news today Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away How long, how long must we sing this song? How long? How long? https://genius.com/2736306 John Lennon: Well it was Sunday Bloody Sunday When they shot the people there. The cries of thirteen martyrs Filled the Derry air Is there any one amongst you Dare to blame it on the kids? Not a soldier boy was bleeding When they nailed the coffin lids! And the one I already posted, by Chris Byrne of Seanchaí You can also find a French translation of that one at https://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?lang=en&id=4572| Joe Mulheron has a song about BLOODY SUNDAY "... But no, I don't have the lyrics. That song was a response to the Saville Report which accepted UK military responsibility for the 1972 killings. Most of the "Domhnach na Fola" videos coming up on youtube are about another bloody Sunday, during the Irish war of independence, when 14 people were killed in Croke Park sportsground in Nov. 1920. Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: Felipa Date: 25 Jan 22 - 09:07 PM Pete Seeger and Percy French were both born in May and both died in JANUARY. I have added them to the Any May Songs thread. Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: GeoffLawes Date: 25 Jan 22 - 06:15 PM Felipa, the songs which I copied and pasted just above are the songs which are listed for the DT when " Ewan MacColl" is entered in the search window at the top of the discussion forum. Yes, some of the songs in the list were clearly not written by him. |
Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: Felipa Date: 25 Jan 22 - 04:31 PM I think with Ewan MacColl there is a clear delineation between songs he wrote or co-wrote, and other songs that he recorded (mainly traditional songs, but MacColl recorded an album of Robbie Burns' songs as well). The one place there is sometimes confusion is whether a song was composed by Peggy Seeger or Ewan MacColl, as they were close collaborators. In the case of Burns, he adapted folksongs as well as writing original poetry. So sometimes you will find a Burns version and other versions of a song such as Aye Waukin' O or The Curragh of Kildare. I was thinking of what we would sing to commemorate Pete Seeger (birthday 3 May). He wrote songs but was more important as a performer and leader. There are also songs which Pete had a part in adapting and arranging, such as We Shall Overcome and Wimoweh. |
Subject: RE: The DT MacColl song listing from Geoff Lawes From: Felipa Date: 25 Jan 22 - 02:10 PM A GREAT MANY of the songs Geoff Lawes attributes to Ewan MacColl were older songs that MacColl recorded(and/or published in a songbook) and didn't compose: Farewell to Tarwathie, The Sweet Kumadie, Mary Hamilton, Our Goodman, Lambkin, Will Ye Go to Sheriffmuir, An Old Man Came Over the Lea, Cruising Round Yarmouth, Wee German Lairdie, Wae's Me for Prince Chairlie, Trooper and the Maid, The Trooper Cut Down in his Prime, The Newcombe Gauger, The Gairdner Child, The Earl of Errol ... the list goes on The Folksingers' Ball is a modern parody which mentions MacColl and a great many other singers, but which MacColl neither recorded nor wrote. Springhill Mine Disaster is by Peggy Seeger, MacColl's wife who both composed songs are her own and together with Ewan. Many other songs on the list were MacColl compositions, including Freeborn Man of the Travelling People, Joy of Living, Go Down You Murderers (The Ballad of Tim Evans), Sweet Thames Flow Softly . |

Subject: RE: Any January Songs? From: Felipa Date: 22 Jan 22 - 05:17 PM Geoff Lawes described William Joyce, aka Lord Haw Haw, as an Englishman. I thought William Joyce was Irish. Actually, he was born in the U.S. to an Irish father and an Anglo-Irish (English born) mother. The family returned to Ireland, where Joyce was brought up. Joyce lived in England from his teens and identified as English but that was an adopted persona. I read that he became a German citizen in 1940. He was never a British citizen so technically could not be guilty of treason to the United Kingdom. Joyce did carry a British passport when he went to Germany. He had obtained it by making false statements regarding his nationality. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Joyce |

Larry Kaplan wrote, in the introduction to his song "Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts," "Stephen Foster was only thirty-eight years old when he died, impoverished and alone, in New York City. In his pocket at the time of his death was a small piece of paper containing the first few lyrics of, perhaps, his next song. Foster lived and wrote music in a time when America as a nation was desperately trying to define (or redefine) its own identity, a time of intense nationalism, and yet a time of civil war. Perhaps more than any other popular musician of his time, he helped to shape some of that identity." DEAR FRIENDS AND GENTLE HEARTS by Larry Kaplan Down at Bellevue Hospital, Out on those nameless wards, Tonight a young man passed away Alone, without a word. Brought there from a boarding house On the Bowery downtown, And on his bed a list of things The nurses there had found. A coat, a hat, his pants, a vest, And a beat-up pair of shoes, And, in his pocket, signed by him, A dollar I.O.U.; And a slip of folded paper Torn off from a paper bag: The first words of another song This whole world might have had. CHORUS (after each verse): "Dear friends and gentle hearts ... " Wherever your last songs may be, Are they lost out in America Between the centuries? Are the melodies still waiting For the ones who need to hear, Though the piano halls and minstrel shows Have faded through the years? Well, the hospital had sent for me, But no more would they do, My name and address taken from Poor Stephen's I.O.U. They said "He's just a vagabond; So many more like him. They spend the last few cents they have On poor man's rum and gin. But hard times in America Are hard times for us all. Some folks bide for better days; Some must take the fall. Some can turn to poetry, Or lose themselves in song; Some set out to change the world, Then lose the path they're on. So, yes, I knew this gentleman; Perhaps you've heard the cheers When Mr. Foster graced this country's Finest halls for years. And he led us in the choruses This whole great nation knew, But he never recognized his worth Or what his songs could do. Now pride brought down by poverty Is such a tragic thing; No matter who the man may be, It steals most precious things. It takes the faith to know yourself; It robs the will to try. But, if it spares your poetry The music never dies. Though we seek mirth and beauty, and music light and gay, There are frail forms fainting at the door. Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say, "Oh, hard times, come again no more." YouTube |
