Oh Dear! Percy French was an inspector of drains (sic) in Ireland in the late 19th C. He wrote many songs and poems- including "Are Ye Right there Michael?", on which there was a recent thread.

Regards

The poem was written by an Irish soldier, one Percy French, who fought in the Crimean War, as near as I am able to determine, it was based on an actual incident--does anyone know anything more about it?

Many years ago I was familiar with a very long poem/ballad about a fight between Ivan Slavinsky Slavar (Russian) and Abdul abubul amir (Turkish), presumably a relic of the Crimean war. If anyone knows of this ballad or even better could let me have a copy of the text, I would be very grateful. Cheers, Ian
