Eliza is very rare in coming over well both live and on record. These are very different skills, which many fine live performers, seduced by the ease of production, fail to realise

Totally agree with Bassic. Stick to Eliza please.

I think Eliza is very talented, and very knowledgable. I prefer her trad material over her songs with pink wigs, but maybe that's just my age showing.

As this is an Eliza thread maybe we should stick to Eliza topics. There is an interesting debate about Kate Rusby on this thread.

I think folks like Kate Rusby because she's quiet and mellow. Maybe bland is nice, sometimes.

Kate Rusby whilst being a competent and professional live performer undoubtedly comes up with some of the most boring. bland CD's in the entire history of folk music! Unfortunately she is also one of the most hyped folk artistes ever!

Anglicana is Eliza's latest, working with traditional material. I like it quite a lot, and though I don't think it lives up to the hype, it's well worth buying. I've only seen her live with Waterson Carthy.

But I do find generally that live performances are much more memorable and striking than the same material on CD. This is very true with Kate Rusby, who is absolutely entrancing live, doing almost anything, but I don't enjoy a CD played straight through. Picking out the jewels is another matter.

Nancy Kerr and James Fagan are again quite delightful, performing in the club.

And on good authority, watch out for Rose Kemp.

Eliza Carthy a very talented lady.
She was nominated for The Mercury Music Awards this year.
I have seen her on several occasions performing with the undermentioned artistes.
The Eliza Carthy CD's that I possess are:
Eliza & Nancy Kerr "Shape of Scrape" 1995
"Heat, Light & Sound" 1996
Eliza & The Kings of Calicutt 1997
"Red" 1998
"Rice" 1998
"Angels & Cigarettes" 2000
I know she's produced one or two albums since then.
Then there's her family albums with Mum & Dad, Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy:
Waterson:Carthy 1994
"Broken Ground" 1999.
Yes, she is famous over here but has she done any live performances in the US? I would be surprised if she hasn't!

I saw Eliza in Stamford a couple of weeks ago, I've seen her live several times now & I think her live work is much improved this year. Martin Green plays on Red Rice, his own band were called 'Whiskey before breakfast' & if you've not seen him recently he's had his dreads cut off! Phil

Calicutt is an older name for modern Kozhikode in SW India. I have no idea if this is relevant to the name of The Kings of Calicutt.

Is Saul Rose lurking out there?

As I recall, the dreaded Martin Green has performed on at least a couple of Eliza's records, and certainly he's recorded with his own band (both of whose names I've forgotten) . . Again as I recall one of the web sites which features Eliza also has a brief bio. of Martin, with recording info.

Sorry that's all so vague, but no-one's offered anything better as yet.

And I still GREATLY prefer Nancy Kerr to Eliza . .

G.

OK Aldus give me some details on the albums with Nancy Kerr. I like the Steely Water album with James Fagan and would like to hear more. Having just listened to Red again it strikes me that I have heard Eliza Carthy perform some of the songs better and perhaps the production on this album gets in the way?

She has done two albums with Nancy Kerr, both wonderful. She"s done a solo and two with Waterson Carthy. They are all worth buying. It isn't that I dislike the Red Rice album, but I don"t thin that it is a great introduction to Eliza Carthy. Personally, I find her the most interesting young singer I have heard in a long time.. Buy A couple of her cds..you will love them, I'm sure.

Aldus - If Red Rice doesn't give you a kick in the pants, what would be your recommendation for an Eliza neophyte. I haven't heard her at all, and reading these comments has me convinced that she's someone I must hear.

Thanks for the various links, folks. Good to read others' appreciation too: I heard Eliza just a week or two back in Nettlebed (Oxfordshire), with her trio of Saul Rose (superb melodeon) and the scary Martin Green on accordian. Can anyone tell me whether he appears on any of Eliza's recordings or doing ony solo work?

I heard Martin Carthy here on the Isle of Wight just a couple of days before and the contrast between the two concerts was astonishing. We need to invite Eliza over here now to cheer us all up again!!

I saw Liza with the Watersons in Bodmin some time ago... I loved them...just wonderful music. I think that any recording on which she appars is a pure delight. Shape of Scrape with Nancy kerr is wonderful as ar the Waterson Carthy recordings. I too am a fan of Kate Rusby...but I must say I do prefer Liza. I was interested to hear that so many people suggested Red Rice, I have to say that I have not warmed up it to it as much as the others.I shall have to play it a lot more.

I never heard of Eliza until hearing her live at the Tranzac in Toronto (thank you Rana and Steve!). She totally blew me away. What a superb musician! (Rusty...I still feel a bit the way you do, and the concert I heard her in - I should note, with the full Waterson:Carthy - was MONTHS ago!)

Hi,

If you can get it, King's of Calicut is good. It was a group that Eliza and Saul (who also plays in Waterson:Carthy) had a few years ago. I was fortunate to catch them during their brief existence.
