Subject: Apologies All Around
From: flattop

Last week, chanteyranger told me on 'Help: meaning of 'in bed w/ captain's daughte' that I owed karolina an apology. Shortly after, McGrath stepped up to give me a few lashes. They have a valid point. I'd like to apologize to karolina and all true lakeyachtsmen that I might have offended who have sail between the potato field from Warsaw to Cracow whether they speak the language or not.

Forgive me for being cynical, it just my nature, I'm always a reluctant believer and a late joiner. Forgive me for not having sung enough sea shanties to believe that the ocean is hallowed ground and for not welcoming all sailors, whatever e-mail address they use. Forgive me for being overly concerned about a captain's daughter when a drunken sailor's dignity is in question. Please accept my apologies for thinking that harpgirl had been both sharp and blunt in a single message and that she must be a clever woman. Forgive me for seing nothing Polish karolina's sentence structure, seeing nothing in the content that one couldn't find on the web and nothing in the address that one couldn't get by registering on Russian and Polish free e-mail sites.

Forgive me for thinking that I recognized a familiar wink and a nod. Forgive me for, like Joan of Arc and Saint Francis, hearing voice and distant tones in the night, voices that reminded me of TTCM, Threadie, Professors Iris the Wonder Horse, Barfy, and other Mudcat identities. For give me for thinking that they all sound like the same person. Forgive me for speculating that Karolina echoed the name of a state fairly close to Tennessee Technical Center Memphis (TTCM) rather than a Polish name like Witold or Czeslaw - that Largo the Russian sounded more like all hat and no cattle than any Russian I've ever heard of, but I suppose the name is right up there there with Boris and Ivan. Forgive me for checking the timing and flow of karolina's messages and thinking that karolina was writing under a lot of variations and for someone who claims to know nothing about computers. Forgive me for noticing that karolina started on a test thread before being welcomed into the inner sanctions of the santimonious, that she mastered TTCM's favourite HTML, the flying banner, very quickly. Forgive me for realizing so late, that TTCM (a.k.a. professor iris, etc.) who seems to be a student at Tennessee Technical Center Memphis with a pattern of internet hoaxes, (including one off Why are guitars SEXY and banjos, not? where he built a web with a cropped mudcat picture of Barkn's wife and a distorted mudcat pictures of Shambles, yet he wasn't competent enough to set the security properly and make it work,) was probably the person who used katlaughing's name in vain.

I apologize for thinking it was all a hoax and a funny, cleaver, and ambitious hoax at that, even if the writing was a shade poor. I apologize for thinking evil thoughts, like, oh my god, he's joking with kat about being a jumping goat on the 'Vot mchitsa troyk' thread. Silly me. Wash out my brain with bitter soap, will ya? Forgive me for laughing most of the two hour drive to Toronto on Monday morning, especially when I thought about the demands that I should apologize. Forgive me for asking myself, 'If these people want to believe that badly, what can I do about it?' and for being reluctant to apologize. For wondering who will be big enough to laugh if it turns out to be a hoax.

Once again, forgive me for looking at the patterns of messages. I'll try to never look again. Forgive me for hearing those voices and seeing patterns, and for not believing in you karolina. I now believe. Keep on sailing, karolina!

While tracing threads and identities late at night last week when I should have been sleeping, I realized how maddening and confusing this thread identity business can be. (I'm glad that I've only use flattop or Guest flattop since I settled on that name or I might be more confused about who I am.) I also noticed that a few mudcattters were being targeted and picked on repeatedly. I like to have fun with words but I felt that following other mudcatters on the site and tormenting them goes way beyond fair play.

I tend to write with a heavy hand or at least heavy fingers. If you are one of the mudcatters who is being stalked and I've been harsh I you in the past, I'm sorry. I will try to lighten up in the future.

Over nearer troubled waters I'd like to apologize:

For confusing folks with banjos and mandolins singing through their noses with soul music.
For letting their music affect my mood swings during a strange, painful week.
For wanting a hug at the wrong time and the wrong place.
For feeling my warm memory from across the tiny bay turn to bitterness and pain.
For tuning into such a silly puppy and a creep.
For staring deep into the sky that we once knew was empty except for communications satellites, knowing that we once drank that same sky and didn't pay it the slightest consideration.
For feeling like Cynthia Lennon when she knew that the train had left the station without her.
For confusing the act of fleeing speechless in the dark with acts of decency and decorum.
For having so few dreams left and none that weren't centered around you. For even building my contingency plans around you.
For feeling the full sadness of a lonely moon on a sleepless night and wanting to cry into the sleeping bag.
For wandering around worrying about you until the mudnesters started chirping to further exasperate my buzzing head.
For all the strange thought that I had about you, believing that your fantasies might come true.
For forgetting how our infrequently our fantasies ever come true.
For not being thankful for the few that do come true.
For not being thankful for the fantasies that don't come true yet replenish our dreams.
For wishing that I was your fantasy.
For spying on you at a distance and seeing things that I hadn't noticed before and only then realizing how difficult life must be for you these days.
For not knowing these things that I could have known about you.
For being too stupid to ask.
For enjoying watching your skirt blow in the sunny breeze.
For wondering, will these people ever have the slightest idea how beautiful and talented you can be?

Actually, Flattop, I think you are pretty close to right on. If one would read carefully and then go and check, you will see that he has nailed someone pretty well. But one piece of advice, Flattop. Leave us be in our ignorance. We don't care if this jackass thinks he is outsmarting us by showing that, when it comes to being welcoming, and caring, instead of cynical and suspicious. Actually, we wear it as a badge of pride. That is why, despite this person of recordsetting lack of self esteem, best attempts, this is still the best place on the Internet. As Rick sez, "It is the town I always wanted to live in". And Blackadder, if he hadn't nailed it, you would not have reacted so badly. To there, no further.

I think that Mick has a point here. If people want to get some sort of thrill by taking advantage of the kind, welcoming attitude of many people hear, good luck to them but I can only feel sorry for these people - they are the losers.

As for me, I have my bad moments but I have got to know a few of these friendly people on a more personal level than Mudcat and have made some good fiends here.

So folks, I guess what I'm trying to say is continue to be welcoming and don't worry that once in a while, we might meet an idiot trying to make fun.

Maybe there's a hoax, maybe there isn't, and in a case like this it's not a matter of great moment. It's so easy to pull hoaxes like that that there's no challenge and no point.

But what flattop's detective work seemed to show to me was, a bunch of querulous prejudices. These appeared tom be grounded in this weird fantasy that seems prevalent in America that Poles are somehow to be seen as stupid. (In England they tell the same jokes Americans tell about Poles about the Irish. And they sometimes regret telling them. I hope that is true sometimes when people across the Atlantic tell "Polish jokes".)

The whoioe thing even started out with flattop and harpgirl sneering at the idea of there being a female polish sailor, which indicates a startling lack of knowledge about Poland or the Polish merchant navy. (I don't mean it's startling not to know about Poland and the Polish Merchant Navy, but that it's startling to know so litle and still be so eager to demonstrate that in public.)

"The potato field from Warsaw to Cracow"...I'd say that that's a phrase that is a dead giveaway...

As I said, maybe flattop's ingenious speculations are correct. That's not too important. What is more important is that the scepticism and the antagonism started before there were any grounds for it, apart from prejudice.

I'm probably not going to score any points for this observation, but, frankly as a new Mudcatter of 2 months, I'm finding the paranoia of many old-time Mudcatters more obnoxious than any flaming I've yet seen. If we're going to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out who's not really as they represent themselves, then the flamers have won, whether they're here or not.

And, when it comes down to it, if Karolina is an imposter, what of it? S/he certainly hasn't posted anything that could be called inflammatory and, if s/he is truly researching all this stuff to keep a step ahead of us, s/he's expending a helluva lot of effort for little gain. We should be flattered that we're worth the effort. As another thread says it so well, lighten up folks!

I was one of the many who welcomed and encouraged Karolina with a private message.
A bad habit I guess. When I was robbed by one of the "poor souls" I took in a few years ago, I got a lot of "I told you sos" from the less hospitable (more cautious) in my circle. But my response was then and remains now "I prefer to help when I can and sleep at night. Things can be replaced; people can't"
So, if Karolina is a hoax, I've been had. And I choose to be "had" again if need be. I received a warm welcome when I arrived at the Mudcat door. I'll offer the same.

I was tempted to let this die, but a few good points are raised.

C'mon gang, let's hold down the paranoia a bit. Some of us who have been around awhile have been badly bitten and most of us hit a point where we go a bit "bugnuts" on the detective thing and end up looking like idiots. Moonchild has a legit reason to be suspicious at times as she was stalked!!! But we tend to let ourselves get into the "Poirot" mode and it just is a waste of time.

You don't like what someone says.....skip it. Flattop, you've posted a lot of fine stuff and I understand where you're coming from because I've been there myself. I'd clicky you back to a few of my rantings when I was "on the trail" but its too embarassing. Let it go and enjoy what the 'Cat really is and the fine folks who you know exist.

Have you read my thread about "Mudcat Donations*Fine Folks and Place?" THAT'S what the 'Cat really is. Let the idiots do their stupid shit.....ain't no big deal. If you're attacked, consider the source. Fuck 'em.

So, I may be missing a point or two here, but I've got to say that I'm largely in agreement with Catspaw. Let's all get the reasonable, rational, fun loving folks on this forum together and get back to talking about music and treating each other with a modicum of respect and friendship.

Just as in the real world, incivil behavior on the Mudcat will never completely go away. But we needn't give it any greater power over us or importance to us than is absolutely necessary.

Well the funny thing is that if you just take people at face value, which is actually kinda hard to do well, it does all come out in the wash eventually. Mudcat is a pretty small town, actually, and this all reminds me of what I was told when Hardi and I came here, to the one we are in now--- which was that if you are a rat, it will show eventually. And it is true. Without even playing detective, the most amazing information simply comes floating in on its own!

And another funny thing is how really perturbing being nice can be to someone who means you harm... it works its way in, down deep, no matter what you may see as a surface reaction, cuz they are having a sort of pull to take you at face value too.

I should let this die but what the hell.

Nose-picking, McGrath? I had no idea that you were capable of such picturesque phrases. I must not forget to look up some of your lyrics. I take it that you didn't find the whole thing flatulently funny. I don't see how this can be racist. Is Poland a race? Besides, I never thought the writing was Polish. You're confusing me with yourself. Let me do a thread trace for you. Potatoes? I was humbled to hear that Poland leads the world in potato production. As a narrow minded Canadian, I had thought Prince Edward Island was the potato pot of the world. We must now bow to Poland potato capacity.

I have learned a lot from this thread. I will never point out such silliness again. I felt pressured to write something more after being told to apologize, yet, I was too hog headed to admit that I was wrong when I didn't think I was wrong. If I ignored it and just turned up on another thread, would someone yell, 'WHERE IS YOUR APOLOGY?' Perhaps I should have read the FAQ. Does it tell us the proper thing to do when someone is pushing our stroller towards kissy-assed-R-us and we don't want to go?

Keep turning those kindness thumb screws, Praise, and don't get distracted by the polka.

Don't worry, flattop, it'll die eventually even if you keep reviving it.

And you are indeed dancing a fine PM polka. (I believe this is not another slam he makes... He is referring to the Schmielzo Polka, which does seem relevant somehow now I think of it, and which is conveniently located in the Mudcat Songbook).

I was thinking, and now this is completely irrelevant, that someone named flattop probably does not need (or feel) two-by-fours administered over top.... probably not the best way to get through.

But here is the thing, and I have said it before, but getting to know flattop a bit has reminded me-- there is still NO SUBSTITUTE for really getting to know another human being.

When we think we're right we shouldn't apologise. When we think we're wrong we should apologise sincerely.

My gripe was that flattop seemed to jump into action prematurely, and seemed to be implying that it was absurd to think that anyone who was Polish could be smart enough to work a computer. And I still think that the phrase I quoted was sneering and contemptuous. Like when people talk about the Irish as bogtrotters. Plenty of bogs in Ireland, and plenty of potatoes too. Like Poland in both respects.

But maybe I read too much into it. Paranoia is catching. I think it's more important to kick up a fuss about what seems like a touch of racism than about who's who on odd thread. If I spotted something which wasn't actually there, I'm glad. (I mean I'm glad it wasn't there.)

OK folks, have we got it all out now???? Having been around this place longer than most, and not near as long as some, I have seen meltdowns like this occur like clockwork. Jeri has even written a song about it. It is like a catharsis for most. But the trouble is that there are victims and they may never come back. So I am going to go back to the original intent and offer an apology.

Dear Karolina,

Please accept my apologies for what you have had to endure in this thread. One must have a bit of a thick skin on the Mudcat, as all subjects are open for discussion. But what one should not have to be subjected to is rudeness. And we have all talked about you here instead of to you. I know that you have been welcomed to the Mudcat in another thread, but after this that may well be like cattle being welcomed to a convention of butchers. I hope you will stick around and give the true nature of the Mudcat a chance to shine through. What you will find is a community of wonderful people that is tied together by a love of folk and blues music and the issues that spawn and inspire that music.

All the best,

Big Mick

I agree wi this thread should die, but as soon as my nickname mentioned and it looks suspicious to His Smartness Flattop . I have to make jis' couple o' notes. First, I put there Largo as a login name for those not realy familiar with Russian (as you probably feel yersel). "Dlinnyi" - which is an english spelling of my nickname in Russian - won't make any sence for the most of I-net people (though I'm not sure even "Largo" make any sence to you). Ivan and Boris (amaizing knowledge of russian names you demonstrate here) - nay, dear, name's Alexander, which is originaly greek, and means "Defender". Thus, second, on behalf of Slav minority on Mudcat Org I'd like to notice that slavic name Karolina was used hundreds o'years afore one of the states' naming. The next thing, since you're not official i-net "investigator-in-charge" and even not a certified "world-wide smart-ass" I don't think I'll put your professional reputation under the stroke saying that your "investigation" (should you change your name to flat-foot, dear) is not stand up to criticism (not to say jis' sucks) - wi the Inet you never can be 100% sure about what route our messages take to deliver (re "timing and flow"). But the "overwhelming results" you're sharing wi the others discourages and offends people, who occasionally seek for help. All this hoax(withch)-hunting looks rediculous here and reminds me an anecdote about the herdsman and Ernst&Young consultant. By the way, are you from E&Y? It could clarify lotta things (at least your beeing cynical) ...Now, about Karolina: the girl exist, lives in Warsaw (Poland), speaks Russian - I'm can say I'm 100% sure about cause I phoned her today and talked wi her.

Thank you for your time, dear,

Alexander "El Largo"

Well what a confusing thread and history, mudlovers.

AAGH! Anonymous flamers are invading our site, build the walls and don't let 'em in! Do we need special membership? Batten down the hatches we are UNDER ATTACK!!!!

Calm, calm, calm...

A possible hoax. Somebody thinks that it might be a hoax and investigates. He reacts to it as if its a hoax. He shares his thinking with others. Is he thanked? Are his doubts taken seriously and debated in a reasonable manner?

Nope, those ever polite and wonderful mudcatters tell him to shut up because they PREFER ignorance. Precisely what you might expect on a degraded site that used to talk intelligently about music until it was invaded by uninformed and yap-happy idiots.

He is called rascist for naming two cities in Poland. Hey McGrath! "Gdansk!" You can call me a rascist now! But tomorrow I may say "Istanbul" and then what will you do? Who knows what city I will name next, all the world lies in fear...

Jesus wept! you stupid bastards, no wonder Reagan and Thatcher and other no-brainers are elected, you can't think for yourselves! Please, please, if you have any pity or mercy in you at all do not vote again, you are incapable of rational thought and have no memory of anything before today's breakfast.

And Largo, LOL! Is that how they teach Russian now? With jis a little-bitty Texan thrown in?

Gotta love that intelligent knee Big Mick. It jerks up so damn fast the brain doesn't even feel the wind of a passing thought. Pity, you can do better, but don't think you're the only one allowed to use strong language now.

I share Big Mick's concern that this nonsense is the kind of thing that stops people we'd like to see sticking around. So far as some of the people posting, I suspect that is the idea, and part of the fun.

And I concur with his apology to Karolina, and any other person from a country that is not on the list of places that count as "regular". (And if the paranoid detective work of flattop is in fact accurate, so what. I'd far sooner risk being "taken in" by a hoaxer risk rejecting and hurting the feelings of a real person.

I agree, McGrath. I have some regrets and feel stupid about some of this. Praise is coaching me through personal messages on how to be less of a prick. She's still hopeful and I wish her luck. Perhaps I shouldn't play on this thread any longer.

I dunno kat....I think Rick has a point (not the one on the end of the stake) and now that this turkey has come full circle, let's all be magnanimous and apologize for our transgressions.

I'll start with saying how sorry I am about the Lindbergh baby and for lighting up a cigarette on the Hindenberg.

I feel much better now........

Personally, this damn thread just confirms my initial impression that we are all figments of Max's imagination. For God's sake, is there no end to the man's endless chain of multiple personalities???

Actually, Fielding is probably right, the whole thing is hilarious, or might be if I had one clue what this thread is all about....

This is all very weird. WHO CARES if Karolina is who she says she is or not? She was really quite delightful. For that matter, except for a few of you whom I know personally, I don't have the slightest idea who ANY of you are, and except for those same few, YOU don't know ME. SO WHAT? I'm having fun anyway.

By the way, the guy I ran into the fishing pier with got his somewhat limited sailing experience on Polish lakes. Please don't anybody take that as a put-down of Polish sailors, but rather as corroboration that people actually DO sail on Polish lakes.

Lemmee help you out Leej..........It was either Professor Plum in the Study with the Wrench or Col. Mustard in the Parlor with the Lead Pipe. That's as much of a hint as we're giving. Now guess. Or at least apologize for something.

I'd like to apologize to Miss Scarlet for messing up her bikini wax job. My guess would have to be Jack Ruby with a Hoover Vacuum(n?) cleaner.

Yeah, you're right. I feel better.

Now Seamus......I'll let you have this one, just make sure you post your addy on that thread devoted to you and singing your praises. As Leej will tell you, songs like that are my 'single entendre' specialty as in:

Nothin' could be finer than to be in her v****a in the morning.
Nothin' could be sweeter than my sweetie when I e** h** in the mor-or-or-ning.

Wanna' hear "Oklahoma?"

Actually, Sir Froppe, you are the one that lacks intellect in this matter, and who had a knee jerk. If you would have bothered to read the post with a critical eye you would have seen that it spoke to only your attitude and not to the merits of your arguments. What bothered me about your post was not what you said, but rather the imperious, look down your nose at the rest of us poor savages, tone of it. I have spent a lifetime taking advantage of that attitude to help workers organize. Usually it is the boss who has it. They are so convinced of their brilliance that they can't see the chinks in their armor. Some of your post had merit, IMHO, but the whole thing was lost in the delivery. It is too bad, really. Cause you have a few ideas that could probably serve this place well. But not nearly as many as you think you do.

And Kat, m'love, sometimes I just go crazy. Kind of like Spock every few years. Sorry.

Mick

Hi Melani,

I'm sure that you are right about people sailing in Poland. If we keep talking about it we may give Polish tourism a minor boost. You can even find a Races web site about it:

http://sail.gdansk.gda.pl/pages/main/index1.htm

You deserve a sincere apology. I took your innocent message and twisted it into my most vile response. I was a cad and a scoundrel. I'm sorry.

How comforting for sweet-talking manipulative management to know that union organizers focus on style instead of substance and suggest keeping people uninformed. Come on Big M, you can do better than that! Sheesh, you must be having a bad day.
