Subject: Missing tunes wanted: From: MMario Date: 24 Jul 00 - 12:26 PM This list of 3800 plus tunes missing from the DT is available by e-mail from me if people want it. (post here or PM me with your address) Thank you to those who have already requested it. This thread is also an appropriate place to post the tunes in ABC or Miditxt, (I can convert them to midi from there if necessary) or you can post them in a thread about the song and post a link here. I will try to keep the main list updated. Also you can post here if you have sent a "missing tune" to Alan_of_Oz as a midi file. Also if you HAVE the music and want to "claim" the song as a contribution but haven't got the midi/abc/whatever done yet, you can post here to eliminate duplicate efforts. Make sense? I hope so. 7/21/00 I send Alan the midi for "Your cheating heart" Please Post Tunes Here (click) |

Subject: Preparing tunes for harvesting From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Jul 00 - 04:46 AM I'm having trouble with the ABC's that have been posted in the last few days. For one thing, it would be better if they did not have chords, since the tunes in the Digital Tradition have only the melody lines. If you have chords, it would be best if you post TWO versions, one with chords and one without. Also, many of the ABC tunes don't seem to work, and I have to play around with them to get them right. In the tune above, I believe the "Q" line should read: Q:1/4=72 - am I correct? [No, I'm not - see below] If you prepared the tune in another format - MIDI or Noteworthy, for example, it might be better to submit the tune in the original format, rather than risking loss of part of the tune by running it through a converter. If there is an existing thread on the song, PLEASE put the tune in that thread. Every thread we start makes things that much harder to find around here. There is no need to start a new thread for every tune you post. Why not start a thread and put a hundred tunes in it? - they will be much easier to find, especially if you remember to put the name of the song in the message's "Subject" line. If you can add a link to the lyrics, all the better. It's a wonderful thing to post tunes - but if they don't work or can't be found, it doesn't do much good. -Joe Offer, lost- |

Subject: Posting ABC Tunes From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Jul 00 - 02:56 PM I had some question about the Q: tempo line in ABC. Here's the official word, from ABC Standard V1.6 Q - tempo; can be used to specify the notes per minute, e.g. if the default note length is an eighth note then Q:120 or Q:C=120 is 120 eighth notes per minute. Similarly Q:C3=40 would be 40 dotted quarter notes per minute. An absolute tempo may also be set, e.g. Q:1/8=120 is also 120 eighth notes per minute, irrespective of the default note length.
Remember that if you post lyrics or ABC tunes at Mudcat, you need to include <br> line breaks on every line. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: GUEST,Snuffy Date: 26 Jul 00 - 06:06 PM Quite a few of the entries in the DT database don't have tunes because they're not songs - they're monologues or similar non-sung pieces. A quick trawl has revealed the following but there may be more: ALBLION - ALBERT AND THE LION ALBLION2 - ALBERT'S RETURN ALBERTRE - ALBERT'S REUNION AMPIE2 - AMERICAN PIE--PROGRAM NOTES BTTLHAST - BATTLE OF 'ASTINGS, THE BATTHAST - BATTLE OF HASTINGS, THE WORKHOUS - CHRISTMAS EVE IN THE WORKHOUSE DECKCARD - DECK OF CARDS DEEDNTAL - DEED OF ENTAIL EILAROO.NOT - EILEEN AROON NOTES ESKNELL - ESKIMO NELL (Amalgamated) GRNWALE.NOT- GRANNY WALE NOTES GRNRUSH4 - GREEN GROW THE RUSHES (COMMENTARY): JUBSOV - JUBILEE SOVEREIGN LRYGRGN.NOT - LARRY GROGAN NOTES FYVINOTE - Notes for Bonnie Lass of Fyvio/Peggy of Darby/ SAMSMLLM - SAM, SAM, PICK UP THA MUSKET XMASPDNG - SAM SMALL'S CHRISTMAS PUDDING HAPNCEFTAL - THREE HA'PENCE A FOOT Then there are plenty where the tune are in the DT, but another song or version. For instance yesterday I posted the ABC for The Fireship, but now I find it's also there as [FIRESHI2 The Roving Kind. So one tune kills two blanks. Likewise I sent Dick the tune for Beauty of Kashmir, but it's also in DT as [ROBBERS Come Fill Up Your Glasses, and as [CNDLFRD The Candleford Anthem, and Off to Dublin in the Green is also [JOLLPLO3 The Ploughboy (Warwickshire RHA) and [DUBLNGRN The Merry Ploughboy And there are 16 variants of Streets of Laredo in the DT with no tune listed - but the tune is already there: LAREDS11 - THE BAD GIRL'S LAMENT LAREDST6 - THE BALLAD OF BLOODY THURSDAY LAREDS14 - THE GIRL IN THE DILGER CASE LAREDS17 - I ONCE WAS A CARMAN IN THE BIG MOUNTAIN CON LAREDS18 - THE LINEMAN'S HYMN LAREDS10 - NOO I'M A YOUNG MAN CUT DOWN IN MY PRIME LAREDS12 - ONE MORNING IN MAY LAREDST9 - PILLS OF WHITE MERCURY LAREDS16 - ST. JAMES HOSPITAL LAREDS15 - THE STREETS OF LOREDO LAREDS20 - A SUN VALLEY SONG LAREDST7 - THE TROOPER CUT DOWN IN HIS PRIME LAREDST5 - THE UNFORTUNATE RAKE LAREDS19 - THE WILD LUMBERJACK LAREDST8 - THE YOUNG SAILOR CUT DOWN IN HIS PRIME YNGMNPRM - YOUNG SAILOR CUT DOWN IN HIS PRIME There must be many more, especially parodies, where the tune is already there but not linked to the song in question Finally, although the tune is originally English, I feel it should be a US 'Catter who posts the tune for [STARSPAN THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER, which will also clear up these two [ANACRON2 ANACREONTIC SONG (2), and [ANCREON TO ANACREON IN HEAVEN Wassail! Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: MMario Date: 26 Jul 00 - 08:53 PM Thanks snuffy - I hadn't gotton to that phase yet, but will consolidate your findings into the list. Though a few of those "monologues" have been set to music. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 26 Jul 00 - 11:48 PM As I'm sure you know, of the "Streets of Laredo" relatives (some much earlier members of that large family; strictly, SOL should itself be considered a relatively late variant) that Snuffy mentions, probably only the parodies were sung to the well-known tune. Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: Sorcha Date: 27 Jul 00 - 05:31 PM Question: I have Katie Bairdie ready (i hope, small grimace of embarassment) to post. I have the URL for the Lyr req thread, the URL and file name for the DT. Do you want me to post it here, or in the lyr req thread? (and Joe, therearenospacesinthefieldheadings) |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: MMario Date: 27 Jul 00 - 08:47 PM I believe Joe has requested you post in the post tunes here thread, UNLESS there is a thread about it that would be a better place, then you can just put a link there. I will record the posting here and in my list of "found tunes" plus remove it from any copies of "no tune in DT" I send out. clear as a mudcat? |
Subject: Where to Post or Submit Tunes From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Jul 00 - 10:52 PM If the lyrics are in the database already, then it works just grand for you to post ABC or MIDITEXT tunes in the Please post tunes here thread. If it's a MIDI or Noteworthy file, send it on to Alan for Mudcat Midis, with a message in the "post tunes" thread that says you sent it to Alan. However, if it's a song with lyrics in the Forum, then it behooves us to keep the lyrics and tune together. Please post the tune (or a notice that you sent the tune to Alan) in the same thread where the lyrics appear. If this works right, Susan and I can kick back and leave the "tunes only" thread to Dick, and we can go merrily along about our business of harvesting lyrics with their related tunes (and then we send the stuff on to Dick and let him do the grunt work). I'm sure Dick won't mind if you make things a little easier for Susan and me. Might even be a bit easier for him. It's helpful to change the "subject" line of messages to show the title of the song you're posting. If you forget, we'll change it for you when we find the song and harvest it. That makes it a little easier to search the Forum for songs. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: Mbo Date: 29 Jul 00 - 03:14 PM Ok, I'm getting in on this too, Mario sent me the list. There were a whole lot of them that I know. Especially all the country and more pop-related ones. My question is, do we have to make our own MIDIs? For instance, there are a lot of tuneless songs in the DT that I know places on the net where you can get good midis of them. Would linking the song to those midis be illegal or something? Or do we have to make them ourselves? I'll post a list of the ones I have in a little bit. --Matt |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: John in Brisbane Date: 30 Jul 00 - 07:50 PM I've worked through the Oxford Book of Ballads. There are a dozen or so missing tunes in it, all of which seem to owe parentage to definitive collections related to Child, Bronson, Buchan, MSS etc.
More of this later, but I can now appreciate why Dick has at various times asked that tune notation be kept as simple as possible.
Regards, John |
