Subject: London's Newspapers From: bill\sables Date: 16 Aug 00 - 08:54 AM I just come across a little bit of British wisdom regarding London's eight daily newspapers. THE TIMES; Read by people who run the country. THE MIRROR; Read by people who think they run the country. THE GUARDIAN; Read by people who think they ought to run the country. THE STAR; Read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country. THE MAIL; Read by the wives of the people who run the country. THE EXPRESS; Read by people who think the country ought to be run as it used to be. THE TELEGRAPH; Read by people who still think it is. THE SUN; Read by people who don't care who runs the country provided she has big tits. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 16 Aug 00 - 09:14 AM Bill, that should be on the "classic jokes" thread! I've always enjoyed it. I suppose we could add the Sunday Sport thinks the country is run by Elvis froma doubledecker 'bus on the moon! There must be a US equivalent -National Enquirer thinks the country is run by aliens? Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Rana who SHOULD be working Date: 16 Aug 00 - 10:30 AM But what about the Independant? (Also, being a bit pedantic, should probably read UK since they are dailies and it is the "Manchester" Guardian. Cheers Rana |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 16 Aug 00 - 11:40 AM Rana, you weren't quite pedantic enough. It is The Guardian; it is published in London (Farringdon Road) and has been for years. You were right to point out that the Independent had been overlooked, but alas you spelled it wrongly. *BG* If I may be pendantic for a moment, London has at least two more dailies, the Morning Star (formerly the Daily Worker) and the Standard, which is sold only in the London area. Extend it to the UK and you'd bring in loads more (well several, anyway). |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Ebbie Date: 16 Aug 00 - 12:15 PM It's 'pedantic', Fionn. *BG* |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 16 Aug 00 - 12:43 PM Ebbie, try that again. Anyone can get it right once! |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Rana who SHOULD be working Date: 16 Aug 00 - 01:18 PM Fionn, Quite right on my Independent spelling - bad habit I have like wanting to spell definite as definate (also I become sloppy on the keyboard). Yes, I know that the Guardian is published down in London these days but it did start as the Manchester Guardian, and the world summary edition is called the Manchester Guardian Weekly. Let pe(n)danticism strike away! Cheers Rana PS. Can you suggest any descriptions for those other overlooked dailies? |

Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Ed Pellow Date: 16 Aug 00 - 05:52 PM As a commited Independent reader, the scary bit is that the Telegraph outsells the Independent by at least 5 to 1. I'm scared that a paper whose editoral content I almost always agree with only sells 200 000 copies, whereas other papers with unpleasant and ill-informed views, sell over a million.... Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Linda Kelly Date: 16 Aug 00 - 06:18 PM The Telegraph has a decent crossword Ed, can't think it outsells the Independent for any other reason. |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 16 Aug 00 - 06:27 PM Even scarier Ed, the Daily Herald failed to survive with sales of 2m, when the FT was making a healthy profit from 180,000. The 180,000 of course had terrific spending power, so the FT actually outdid the Herald on the most critical income stream, advertising revenue. I'm not saying there's a better way, but this is not my idea of a free press. |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: Lox Date: 16 Aug 00 - 09:49 PM The Irony is of course that Rupert Murdoch runs the country ... erm ... countries ... erm ... I have a headache. |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: ddw Date: 17 Aug 00 - 12:38 AM No wonder you have a headache, Lox — you're always pickled. ;>) |
Subject: RE: BS: London's Newspapers From: GeorgeH Date: 17 Aug 00 - 09:22 AM Of course the Standard is an Evening paper, unlike the others . . And IIRC when the Guardian ceased to be "Manchester Guardian" the "Manchester Guardian" continued in parallel. As for the Torygraph . . well, I reckon it's not bad as a NEWSpaper, and its editorialising is easily recognised and so passed over. Infinitely preferable to The Times . . Actually the Time's "Read by people who run the country" is the only one of the original descriptions that I'd really challenge; that description was the pre-Murdoch times. And on newspaper sayings, my favorite is "he's reached the age where he believes what he reads in the Daily Mail", only I'm afraid I can't remember its source. G. |
