I think the song is 'Kisakhitin' which, I think, means 'I love you' in Cree. Buffy Ste Marie appears never to have recorded it but it featured in the TV special 'The Many Moods of Buffy Sainte-Marie' back in the early 1980s. The special also included footage of BSM being inducted into the Lakota tribe in Alberta. The song contains a reference to a Lakota elder prophcy that "it would
The song is beautiful, and, stylistically, very much a BSM original. IIt includes the lines -
'Now on some reservation your purification's begun,
It's the 5th generation - the young and the old are as one
Singing : come back to the sweetgrass, back to the pipe and the drum,
and be your future".
BSM refers - almost subliminally - to the song on the last track of 'RUNNING FOR THE DRUM'.

Hi Liland,

I've got all her old albums, so I will take a look for that one, and get back to you tomorrow, I hope. Gotta go out now for dinner, etc. PM me if I forget about this in the next day or two.

Little Hawk

At least 20 years ago I attended a Buffy Sainte-Marie concert at the Paramount in Seattle, in which she sang a song I had not heard before that was at least partly in her ancestral Cree tongue. I know very little Cree, but I do recall it contained the words "napesis" and "iskwesis" (boy and girl, respectively). I don't recall if it was all in Cree and those were just the only words I caught, or if the bulk of it was in English or maybe French (or conceivably even Mitchif). Does anybody know this song? I also don't know if she wrote it or if it's a true folk song or what.

Liland
