Hey emily-0. I bet you always wanted to learn how to play the accordion, didn't you? I bet that awful britney spears doesn't play the accordion...
Just tell your dad you want a nice new Italian accordion and you want lessons so you can learn how to play it well, and then you can come back here and talk with all of the rest of us who hate britney spears, and like talking about accordions. heh heh heh... |

Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: Willie-O Date: 06 May 01 - 08:36 PM i rather like this disguise. i suppose you can tell me apart from my dad by my laziness and lack of capitalization (that's a weird word...i think i spelled it wrong) actually, i don't care much for accordions...probably something to do with the fact that several time is my youth, my father decided playing the accordion at four in the morning would be a good alarm to get me up for swimming lessons (don't ask him, he'll just deny it!) they're not so bad really...it's just at four in the morning, one doesn't really want to hear much of anything...and accordion music comes pretty high on the list of certain types of sounds you particularily DON'T want to hear. on the other hand, if i learn to play accordion, i could be the one waking DAD up at four a.m....now that's an idea. supposedly i'm learning to play guitar. i think i've suposedly learned about five songs so far...supposedly...they all used to be favourites of mine before i murdered them, too. *sigh* -alicia teacup (aka emily-o...it's only fair that the other name should come first...go crazy detectives!...um...don't ask...you'll get a three hour explanation about plays about crazy people.) |

Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: Little Hawk Date: 06 May 01 - 09:38 PM Emily-O - I believe your assessment of Britney Spears is pretty much bang-on, to use an expression. Actually, Celine looks a little like a dying penguin from certain angles, don't you think? I mean, just slightly....just a hint of dying penguin there. Emily, keep in mind that the steadfast use of lower case only may eventually consign you to the ranks of e.e. cummings imitators, and pretentious young poets who fake selflessness by eschewing capitals. Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: sian, west wales Date: 08 May 01 - 11:10 AM They're both Breton instruments, LH. The biniou being (I think?) the bag pipe; the bombarde is like a chanter with better aim. Although 'better' is a relative description. The bombarde is the musical equivalent of the military bombard - particularly after a long night of pan-celtic revels. [[ooo, me 'ead]] Oh, yeh. And the Bretons express their celtic contrariness by playing them in duets. sian Hi, Sian - I had to change your angle brackets to square ones - you had swallowed part of the subsequent post. In Mudcat messages, please use angle brackets only for HTML tags. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: Matt_R Date: 08 May 01 - 11:14 AM Well, LH, Bombarde & Biniou are the two instruments that always play together in Breton dance music, (an dros, hanter dros, dance plinns, etc.). The Bombarde is somewhat like an oboe and has a high-pitched reedy sound. The Biniou is the Breton form of the bagpipe, played by such folks as Patrick Molard. The Biniou is also very high pitched. Together, they should not listened to at high volumes, as they would probably rupture your eardrums. But I think they are awesome. Breton bands such as Bagad Breig and Bagad Kemper are massed Biniou bands, that play like massed Highland Pipe Bands, except for the higher pitched instrument. There is a lot of it on Dan Ar Braz's album Héritage des Celtes that has folks from Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, England, and Galicia playing together. "Call To The Dance" features a Biniou massed band (with harmony!) along with Dan Ar Braz playing the traditional melody on his electric guitar. --Matt |

Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: lady penelope Date: 09 May 01 - 02:37 PM An accurate description of a bombard is, that it is like listening to a finely tuned Elk dying in an overly 'hammed up' amature dramatics version of Hamlet. It's loud, painful and seems never to stop. I actually quite like them. I am of the opinion that they should be listened to in large numbers ( it's the rock child in me ) though not necessarily indoors. Welcome to the cafe, Mistress Teacup. Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: Little Hawk Date: 09 May 01 - 04:32 PM Har! Har! The silliness goes on... I think LTS meant Celine Dion's throat...or Britney Spears'...not mine. Some would categorize my hair as "long", depending on where they think "short" ends and "long" begins. It is longer than that of most males these days, but shorter than MMario's. However, he ties his long hair back most of the time, thus making it look shorter than mine, IMO. I once had hair as long as Mario's, but eventually went for the bushy Dylan look instead. It's the dragged-backwards-through-a-barbed-wire-fence look. I like it. Sometimes I get an urge to go for a shorter cut, but only occasionally. Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: CarolC Date: 16 May 01 - 01:05 AM Nah. If they had been guys with long hair, I would have had to fend them off. ;-) |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: Amergin Date: 16 May 01 - 01:25 AM Well, if you had been carrying that lovely squeeze box of yours on your chest I could see why... |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: CarolC Date: 16 May 01 - 02:16 AM Yeah. But it would have been ok, though. I had flattop there to protect me, too. He's a very powerfull and intimidating looking guy. People don't mess with him too much. |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: Little Hawk Date: 16 May 01 - 02:46 PM Yes, he is one brutal piece of work, isn't he, Carol? If the massive muscles and the towering stature weren't enough to put someone off, his acid tongue is more than sufficient to reduce them to a quivering heap! I make it a point to take flattop along whenever I am required to play acoustic music in the seedier types of bars, such as those frequented by local biker gangs. He just curls his lip in a slight sneer and they shove off right fast! - LH y'know, I think this thread has about run its course.... |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: gnu Date: 16 May 01 - 03:50 PM flattop is big as well as being a Caper ? What a combo !!! |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: CarolC Date: 16 May 01 - 06:08 PM Well, gnu, lets just say you don't want to meet him in a dark alley without your pepper spray... |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: hesperis Date: 16 May 01 - 07:04 PM Carol - LH hoards young ladies? I never knew that! LH - um, you have just described flattop as "towering" after we've spent considerable effort to persuade 'catters that he is only a foot tall... and blue-skinned. And as for people being scared of him... well, it could be his size, I suppose. After all, short people can hit you *very easily* where it hurts. Not having to stoop to a low blow can be a frightening advantage over more unfortunate, taller people. |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: CarolC Date: 16 May 01 - 07:34 PM Not to worry, hesperis. Little Hawk was a perfect gentleman, and he remained steadfast and true to his beautiful sweetheart. Things looked pretty desperate for a little while there, but Little Hawk took out his guitar and started singing 'Elvis Loves Me', and they quieted right down. That's when we made good our escape. |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: Mark Cohen Date: 16 May 01 - 10:52 PM I noticed it, too, hesperis... Mark |
Subject: RE: mwahahahaha! From: CarolC Date: 16 May 01 - 11:39 PM I know there is quite a bit of controversy raging over flattop's actual stature. Sometimes people get the impression that he's taller than he is because of his amazingly impressive build. I hope these pictures of flattop in his role of professional body builder, 'Professor Atilla' will set the record straight. |
