I am a fan of Google too. FastSearch has been mentioned by a couple of people here and sounds good. I keep forgetting to try it though.

Re Forum vs chatroom, my own (probably incorrect)interpretation of the difference is that in a chatroom, the discussion/conversation takes place in more or less real time.

The main differences between Forum and Chatroom:
Forum: you put a message here and anyone can read it at any time. You have to refresh the message list to see new messages (in this forum, if you use the "Messages since last visit", the refreshing is done automatically every soandso seconds - you can configure it).
Chatroom: you put a message there and those people who are at the chatroom at that time, can read your message. If someone looks in later, he or she can't read your message.

I have probably confused John in Hull by saying that in some chat rooms your email address is on show and you can then receive junk email. To get round this I suggested getting one or more extra email addresses to use in those occasions so that your main address isn't cluttered with junk (my boss gets loads of unsolicited porn email after visiting a chat room - but I have since found out that this is a particular problem with the way AOL operates). I have a hotmail email address and a freeuk email address. The hotmail is web based and can be accessed from any computer but messages aren't saved on my computer for later reference . The FreeUk is a 'free' ISP account and I can receive email by using the same connection I normally use (btinternet) but if I want to send messages via that account I have to use the FreeUK dialup network which is charged at a local call rate.
This still isn't making much sense is it?

Main email address - for close friends and 'trusted' people or sites
Second address - most people and contact for companies I have bought stuff from
third (hotmail) anything else on the internet that wants an email address - guest books and the like. This is the email that is now filling with junk and luckily has a bulk folder that collects most of the crap
I check my main email every day, the next one every other day and the hotmail whenever I remember.

Most Free ISP's aren't very free either, the free bit is usually that you don't have to pay a subscription, you do have to pay for the connection time though. For a while I have been using BTInternet which has a monthly subscription charge but no call charges - the drawback is that the service seems to be very unreliable (last night impossible to connect) and much more sluggish than other ISP's I have used. No such thing as a free lunch !!

ISPs: I am using Freeserve Time. I think (it's my mothers account) it costs about £15 per month for 24/7 and the service is reasonable. I also have a FreeUK account which I have had for some time and I have been very happy with the service. The drawback is that you have to pay for the phone calls - Freeserve works out a LOT cheaper.

I wouldn't really worry about the cost of technical support. I think I've only used it once in about 4 years. I am perhaps a little more computer literate than a number of others who use Mudcat but as long as you can get an internet connection, there are plenty of other sources of help availible for most matters. It is perhaps a good idea to do something like I do and use one of the free accounts as a backup.

You have to send and receive on line but you don't have any trouble getting rid of the spam and can be completely incognito if you wish

I've not used technical support either, the only problems I really had were
using free discs to join an ISP, in both cases these overrode my existing dial up/ email settings. So now I use the manual set up option when connecting to a new ISP, it isn't that difficult and any problem you might be ringing the support line about can often be traced back to those settings. When my email is 'acting up' I often find that one of the settings has been corrupted somehow and it is easy to sort out if you have a list of the correct settings - I seem to think FreeUK had an easy to use explanation of how to manually set up an account.

I've never used the Help Forum Pene, it looks a bit sterile and impersonal? And having looked at it I am not sure how to use it!!
Gill was asking how to copy/paste something to include in a thread and I think I pointed out the Mudcat HTML Guide where it is explained, and said she could try copy/pasting to notepad or word or to one of these threads. I don't think that I explained that these threads are not permanent like the others

It looks like Gill could do with her own Mudcat Name too, is it possible to have more than one on the same computer without using another browswer or the 'identities' option?
oh am I in for it if it is explained in the FAQ, help,....

Roger, I'd guess one thing that may give that impression with the help forum is the policy that I and others often adopt when dealing with requests to fix threads or handle duplicates. As a general rule, I just post back to say the job has been done (mostly to save another Joe Clone from going back to try and fix again) and don't enter into conversation - I don't really see the point.

I don't know if the 2 members question is in the FAQ... so here goes. The way it works is that the Membership details are held at Mudcat and a cookie is used on a computer to log the current user. As long as Memberships have been created for each user (this could have been done on a different machine), all that is needed is to go to Membership and click on "Reset Cookie" (do not re-enter member details) to change the current user.

A way for 2 users to avoid the need to reset cookies is to run 2 browsers, e.g. Netscape and IE which have there own sets of cookies, once set up, the Membership will reflect the browser in use.

I just think it can be quite intimidating for new people coming along if they don't get a 'personal' response from someone. It would be a terrible thing to accidently exclude people simply because they haven't yet learned some basics. So is it OK for me to keep refering people here? They get a quick response and the threads will be deleted so they are not taking up space.

Roger, the Help Forum would be the best place to refer people for questions about how Mudcat works. The FAQ is also very good. I don't read the HTML threads very often, and I do read the Help Forum several times a day. I suspect others are the same.

There isn't much discussion on the Help Forum because we tend to focus on answering questions or fixing things. If we need to work something out, we will. It's more business-like, but hopefully still friendly.

Roger, that's how they do it. It would be good if they checked the FAQ for their answers first. The same people who are answering questions here are the ones who do it in the Help Forum. None of us (that I'm aware of) dress up in monster suits on the Help Forum. :-)

Re two users, I just read through the FAQ, and yes, it's there. Under "Benefits of Membership" see "Duplicate Membership."

If Gill has a separate e-mail address from Sam (and Graham - I think he still has a cookie here), it's no problem. She can just log out, then click on "Membership" and register herself with her own e-mail address.

If she has the same e-mail address, the only solution I know of is for her to use a different brower.

about cookies, browsers and multiple users...my Netscape (4.7x) will allow multiple users with different cookies, bookmarks, settings, fonts...etc..My wife, son & I all have our own setup with one 'basic' program...it is great!...I also have IE5...but the last time I used it, it messed up my Agent newsreader settings!...and I have a copy of the Opera browser...just in case

neither blink nor marquee are HTML. blink is a netscape extension, marquee is a Microsoft extension. Both are non-standard and only understood by browsers of the inventors.

Jeri, I'm not sure what you are saying about email addresses. It is the Mudcat Membership system that sets the rule that duplictate email addresses are not allowed. Using different browsers will make no difference.

If an additional email address is required, one solution is to go to Yahoo or Hotmail and get a free account.

Bill, how do you do that? Netscape refer me to some Profile Manager but I can't find it on my installation of 4.73.

Bill, I use MSIE5 and Agent and have had no problems. Just gotta tell IE that Agent is your preferred e-mail and news reader. I had Netscape, but it was a bit too assertive for my taste. It kept taking over for other programs without asking.

John, if you go to the "Filter" block on the main forum page and type "banana" then set the age to 7 days, the thread pops right up - here.

When you post a response in a thread that has nothing to do with the initial question, there's a slim chance whoever asked will see it. Of course, there's a real good chance someone will help you find the original thread. :-)

Noreen, I can't see your little hearts at all in the thread. When I go to "view source" they show up just fine. I have no idea why they work in text but not in a thread...

It's my understanding that the "descriptive" codes are specifically designed to be cross-platform, while number codes are always specific to a particular browser.

Numeric character codes are Unicodes which is standardized (platform-independant).

The symbolic character codes are just synonyms for some of the numeric character codes for people who can't remember numbers. Most people can remember &quot; easier than &#34; (or was it &#35; ;-)

Exceptions: the codes from &#128; to &#255;. These are taken from the current codepage (which can be set for each webpage).

Can't resist one more
There are 8 hyphens after the character and only 7 in front of it.(This was actually on purpose)
In your word processor, if you replace "--------" (that's 8 dashes) with "tab" (again, it's "^t" in Word) you'll get one column tabbed out, withe the dashes removed.
Next replace "-------" (thats 7 dashes) with ";^t" it should put the ";" where needed and tab out the other column.

Yes, I've found it pretty handy a couple of times. I followed the "Appendix E" table in the O'Reilly "HTML: the Definitive Guide," which I've found to be a pretty good reference.
One of the things that the O'Reilly guide does a good job on is pointing out things that work in Netscape but not in IE, & what works in newer viewers (or doesn't) that is different for older ones.
The table would be a lot handier to use if you could put it into multi-column format, but the only simple way to do that would be to use a "TABLE."
I need to go back to the Mudcat HTML guide before I do any more with it, because I seem to recall a comment about tables having, or causing, a problem with Mudcat's HTML handling.
A shorter table, with just characters from about number 191 through 255 would probably be the most help to people, since those characters cover most of the accents, breves, tildes, etc that would help clarify some of the non-English references that people put into threads.
We probably need some comment from people that know more about the data base before encouraging the use of "extended" characters there. If you're searching for "O'Henry" and someone put it in as "Ó Henry" it might make life more difficult instead of better.
