The Basic Folk Library thread has got long and rather unmanageable. Recently, we appear to have been making some attempts to summarise, notable by John in Kansas and by myself.

As you can see, I have set up a temporary site

HERE

which contains, in a slightly more organised form, all the information to date (except John's recent addition which is largely complementary) from the thread.

If people want, I'm happy to upkeep my site above and improve it to provide more accurate and detailed information as well as a more friendly HTML setup. This with the aim of providing it as a permanent Mudcat resource.

Do people want this?

I'd be happy for any suggestions as to content, format or anything else (at least anything not relating to my arse, which is sacred to me). Just let me know on THIS THREAD or PM me as appropriate.

Hi, Ian - that's a nice piece of work. I don't like MMario's idea of making QuickLinks longer because it won't be very quick, but I'm wondering if you'd like to work with me to maintain it as a PermaThread. There are a number of Permathreads that need regular maintenance, and I'm looking for volunteers. Let me know.

An excellent beginning, IanC, and thank you heartily for the effort!

A suggestion: Will you welcome "annotations" for books from the masses? The more info one can get about each book, methinks, the better a resource your site will be for making purchase decisions.

Anyone lookin for The Oxford Book of Ballads will find a link to the online version at Bartleby.Com.

Ian C. I am sure Bob Bolton will be along to rise to your challenge, but a couple of standards to begin with are:

Ron Edwards 'The Big Book of Australian Folk Song' Rigby 1976
Bill Scott 'The Complete Book of Australian Folk Lore' Ure Smith 1976.

There are probably later editions of these, but those are the editions I have.

Ian, I've been watching this build and your latest version is really looking good on format. Much easier to read and use! Congrats!!!

Here's a couple suggestions on basic books. I think any basic library would be incomplete on Appalachian Dulcimer without Jean Ritchie's "The Dulcimer Book." She is the "mother" of the instrument and there is simple instruction here, but a wealth of folklore and stories about the instrument.

For Hammered Dulcimer, IMHO, the best single text/instruction book on the market is "Striking Out ... And Winning" by Lucille Reilly. It is a very thorough and well written book with excellent diagrams and photographs. As a single entry, it's hard to beat.

And here's one for some category or another which has proven useful at times. The book is "Mountain Range:A Dictionary of Expressions from Appalachia to the Ozarks" by Robert Hendrickson......Mebbee this'n ain't sumpin' ya holt with tho, but it's morrin a mite fair...........It's pretty good really!!!

Jeff Todd Titon 'Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes' University Press of Kentucky 2001.

Titon's collection gives music and notes for 170 fiddle tunes from Kentucky's rich folk heritage. It contains an excellent introductory essay and capsule biographies of significant Kentucky fiddlers. The book comes with a 26-track CD of fiddle recordings by Luther Strong, John Salyer, William H. Stepp etc, many of which have not been previously available.

Thanks Stewie. At the moment, I'm not working on the site (gonna have to get it off Cable & Wireless by 30th Nov. anyway). I'll add this one when I am back on it.

BTW, you may have noticed I haven't been on Mudcat much this last 2-3 weeks, that's due to a change in my working patterns which means I get less chance!
