Where I live, flying the flag has become a symbol of extremism; it has been co-opted by those who still think of African Americans as niggers, who call Chinese "chinks" and who think gay men make great target practise. As we live in a fairly quiet cul-de-sac community, there was no real way to know how far reaching this was to be. We saw another 3 people in our little row of townhomes out with their candles as well. We went in at about 7:30. Then, we had to run some errands. Videos from the 2 days my daughter was out of school, food to get for dinner. And I rounded a corner and saw a crowd the likes of which I never thought I would all gathered at night here in my fairly smallish suburban Washington, DC community. They stood along the road, waving flags shining their candles, and calling out to the passing cars. We all honked and waved back as we went by. And later on, a sole teenage girl with a candle and a flag, weeping on a busy corner. Gargoyle, what you have listed might be what that flag holds for you, but why not try to understand that yours is not the only perception? I was again deeply touched by my fellow Americans. I am proud of my flag right now, not because of the awful things that may have been done under it (and no nation is perfect anymore than her people are perfect), but for the times when this country has shown it's strength not in acts of bullying, but in acts of quiet resolve and loving, compassionate support. |

There was nothing in our local paper that I knew of, so word must have spread through the internet, on tv, or somehow. I then hastened to the local college campus for the last night of a 4-day vigil where the remnant that remained stayed until their candles were burned to their ends. |

I ran into a couple of session regulars making their way toward Market Square holding not-yet-lit candles. I followed, and people stood around in a circle and sang. I mentioned We Shall Overcome to a friend, and she began singing. When she came to the end of the first verse, a woman across the circle started singing a second, and I came in with a third. We held hands, smiled sadly at one another, and some cried. |

I joined a couple of kids for a moment, having no candle to hand, and they shared. Gargoyle, I guess I have always had rugged feelings about flag flying, but this week has made me realize that this is my home. I'm mad at its leadership, economic policies, foreign policies, militarism, race relztions and more, much of the time, but it's the place where most of the people I love in any sort of personal way live. Having spent the better part of Tuesday trying to find three cousins, my brother and his family (successfully, I might add) I now have a deeper understanding of the lives of innocent bystanders, and I also have a deeper sense of this as home. I probably won't put out a flag, but I did come home and put out a candle on my porch (we're due for a frost tonight, so I didn't stay out with it.) I talk to a lot of just plain folks, the guys who deliver the produce, paper products and dry goods to my kitchen, the mail man, customers, kids along Barre st, and there's none of the boast and brag I heard around the Gulf War. People are troubled and angry and sad, but they all want to se if we can possibly get it right. Some of 'em fly flags, and perhaps before Tuesday, that would have meant the usual to them and to me, but I know I see things differently now, and they may as well. Lots of light out there tonight. Let's hope we can find a way to do this right. Susan

I would guess that over 200 people came. Songs were sung, A hospice minister gave a talk, and people came up and made brief statements on how the disaster has touched them. The individual statements focused overwhelmingly on the personal sense of loss and the need to come together without regards to racial cultural or religous differences to show what America and Freedom really are. It truly was a moment that I will remember for the rest of my life. JAB GRIEVE for those that are gone, and PRAY for the living and those that are lost that they may be found and brought out of the rubble alive into the light. PRAY for our future. |

People lit up at 7 pm because the first emails said 7 pm and peole did not think about the time zone thing. I stood with a friend in a small group, in front of a restaurant which apparently encouraged the waitstaff to take part. When people who passed on the sidewalk saw the vigil they decided to stop and stand in silence...they also passed their candles along to others as they moved on. One guy tried to give my candle back and thanked me when I told him to light it again at 10 pm when the rest of thecountry joined in! |

After a couple of Irish whiskies I wandered back up the Downtown Mall to where there would normally have been a Zydeco band for this week's Fridays After Five, and came upon a rather impromptu-looking candlelight vigil. There were boxes and boxes of candles around with a note saying Take one if you need one. Someone looked at me and said those exact words and I gave up trying not to weep, took one, and went and sat down next to a beautiful, big dog. I asked the guardian's permission and then sat there, leaking brain chemicals, patting the dog and being mightily comforted. There were groups of people, individuals, holding candles, some singing, many children playing in the amphitheater for poignant contrast. At one point as I sat there staring at my candle and trying not to wax my fingers some feet came over from a group that I think was the one that had been singing America the Beautiful. I just sat and got wetter, tears streaming down my face as they had been for most of the candle by then; eventually a knee appeared on the grass and a voice said If you need a hug, I've got an extra one… I turned and just let go, sobbing uninhibitedly for a while. Eventually I stopped actually sobbing, gave my Samaritan a hug back without ever looking up, and went back to quietly leaking brain chemicals. The dog's kind guardian then nudged the big animal back to me (whom I think had left for the noise), and let me pat the dog for a while longer. They stayed till I started looking around for kleenex and a second candle, a nice, nice pair. |

The wind was 30mph, but we all huddled around the candle so the wind would not touch the flame. We all (20 or so) shared a prayer and a group hug around the candle. We then decided to move away from the candle and let the wind blow it out. We did so, and the flame grew longer, but did not extinguish. Even when held on the windiest side of the house. We brought it inside and placed it in a glass full of beach sand. The door next to the candle was open all night, but the flame did not go out, but rather burned till it descended into the sand... |
