Subject: RE: Honky Tonk Drinking Songs From: GUEST,Lillian Kay Smith Date: 16 Sep 07 - 02:32 PM Just in case any ones interested, this song was written by my father, Jack Kay. He played the fiddle in Webb Pierce's band in the early and mid 50's. I have the original paper he wrote the song on and the contract where he sold the rights to Webb. My Dad died in 1971. I have several songs that Dad wrote. Unfortunately, Dad had a drinking problem and most knew that so when he'd have a few too many and he's sell them for pennies. "Here I Am I'm Drunk Again", to my knowledge, was the only one that made the charts. I am always looking for memorbilia from the era that Dad played with Webb, especially any video's. If anyone has any I'd really appreciate it if you'd contact me. Thanks, Lillian lilliankaysmith@yahoo.com August, Georgia |

Subject: RE: Honky Tonk Drinking Songs From: Lonesome EJ Date: 15 Feb 05 - 02:05 AM Linn....just saw your post. I know the song from the Flying Burrito Brothers' Sleepless Nights lp from about 1974. The album was a collection of recording session outtakes, mainly by the Burritos featuring Gram Parsons, but it also has a couple of Gram Parsons/Emmy Lou Harris duets that are real classics. The album is for the most part a tribute to honky tonk music. It has the only version of "Your Angel" that I recollect ever hearing, although I don't think they wrote it. |

Liquor was the only love I've known, But you rescued me from reaching for the bottle, And you brought me back from being too far gone. CHORUS: You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey. You're as sweet as strawberry wine. You're as warm as a glass of brandy, And I stay stoned on your love all the time. I looked for love and all the same old places, Found the bottom of the bottle always dry, But when you poured out your heart, I didn't waste it, 'Cause there's nothing like your love to get me high. CHORUS [Recorded by David Allan Coe and George Jones.] |

Subject: Lyr Add: MISERY AND GIN (from Merle Haggard) From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Feb 05 - 11:17 PM Mentioned by GUEST,bds808 above: MISERY AND GIN Johnny Durrill, Tommy "Snuff" Garrett « © '80 Peso Music » Memories and drinks don't mix too well, And jukebox records don't play those wedding bells. Looking at the world through the bottom of a glass, All I see is a man who's fadin' fast. Tonight I need that woman again. What I'd give for my baby to just walk in, Sit down beside me, and say, "It's all right. Take me home and make sweet love to me tonight." CHORUS: But here I am again, mixing misery and gin, Sittin' with all my friends and talkin' to myself. I look like I'm havin' a good time, but any fool can tell That this honky tonk heaven really makes you feel like hell. I light a lonely woman's cigarette. We start talkin' 'bout what we want to forget. Her life story and mine are the same. We both lost someone and only have ourselves to blame. CHORUS [Recorded by Merle Haggard.] |
Subject: Lyr Add: MARGARITAVILLE (Jimmy Buffett) From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Feb 05 - 11:01 PM Mentioned by GUEST,Genie above: MARGARITAVILLE Jimmy Buffett Nibblin' on sponge cake, Watchin' the sun bake, All of those tourists covered with oil. Strummin' my six string, On my front porch swing. Smell those shrimp. They're beginnin' to boil. Wasted away again in Margaritaville, Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, But I know it's nobody's fault. Don't know the reason, Stayed here all season With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo. But it's a real beauty, A Mexican cutie, How it got here, I haven't a clue. Wasted away again in Margaritaville, Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, Now I think, hell, it could be my fault. I blew out my flip-flop, Stepped on a pop-top, Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home. But there's booze in the blender, And soon it will render That frozen concoction that helps me hang on. Wasted away again in Margaritaville, Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, But I know, it's my own damn fault. Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame, And I know it's my own damn fault. |

I showed up in boots And ruined your black tie affair. The last one to know, The last one to show, I was the last one you thought you'd see there; And I saw the surprise And the fear in his eyes When I took his glass of champagne And I toasted you, Said, "Honey we may be through, But you'll never hear me complain." CHORUS: 'Cause I've got friends in low places, Where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases My blues away, And I'll be okay. I'm not big on social graces. Think I'll slip on down to the Oasis. Oh, I've got friends in low places. Well, I guess I was wrong. I just don't belong. But then, I've been there before. Everything's all right. I'll just say goodnight, And I'll show myself to the door. Hey, I didn't mean To cause a big scene. Just give me an hour and then, Well, I'll be as high As that ivory tower That you're livin' in. CHORUS Well, I guess I was wrong I just don't belong But then I've been there before Everything's all right. I'll just say goodnight, And I'll show myself to the door. Was the life of the party; I can't stop grinning, I had too much tequila last night. CHORUS: Jose Cuervo, you are a friend of mine. I like to drink you with a little salt and lime. Did I kiss all the cowboys? Did I shoot out the lights? Did I dance on the bar? Did I start any fights? Now wait a minute. Things don't look too familiar. And who is this cowboy who's sleepin' beside me? Well, he's awful cute, but how'd I get his shirt on? I had too much tequila last night. CHORUS Oh, those little shooters, how I love to drink 'em down. Come on, bartender, let's have another round. Well, the music's playing and my spirits are high. Tomorrow might be painful, but tonight we're gonna fly. CHORUS: Jose Cuervo, you are a friend of mine. I like to drink you with a little salt and lime. She's dancing where the music's loud and lights are low. In a crowded bar she likes to hang around, And as long as there's a honky tonk, she'll never settle down. CHORUS: So close up the honky tonks. Lock all the doors. Don't let the one I love go there anymore. Close up the honky tonks. Throw away the key. Then maybe the one I love will come back to me. I wish I had the power to turn back the time And live again the hours when she was all mine, But it hurts to see her running with that crowd downtown, And as long as there's a honky tonk, she'll never settle down. Subject: Lyr Add: PLEASE, MISTER, PLEASE From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Feb 05 - 02:17 PM Mentioned by Guest,Deda above: PLEASE, MISTER, PLEASE Bruce Welch, John Rostill In the corner of the bar, there stands a jukebox With the best of country music, old and new. You can hear your five selections for a quarter And somebody else's songs when yours are through. I got good Kentucky whiskey on the counter, And my friends around to help me ease the pain, 'Til some button-pushing cowboy plays that love song And here I am just missing you again. CHORUS: Please, mister, please, don't play B-17. It was our song; it was his song; but it's over. Please, mister, please, if you know what I mean, I don't ever wanna hear that song again. If I had a dime for every time I held you— Though you're far away, you've been so close to me— I could swear I'd be the richest girl in Nashville, Maybe even in the state of Tennessee. But I guess I'd better get myself together, 'Cause when you left, you didn't leave too much behind, Just a note that said "I'm sorry" by your picture, And a song that's weighing heavy on my mind. CHORUS [Recorded by Olivia Newton-John and a few others.] |

I swore my ways that would mend; But you cheated, dear, and that's a sin. Here I am; I'm drunk again. CHORUS: I'm drunk because that you are gone. At the bar I'm standing all alone, Drownding my sorrows deep within. Here I am; I'm drunk again. Now, I don't like this life of mine, Drinking whiskey, beer, and wine. Dear, I know this is the end. You say you got troubles. My friend, listen here: If you'd look around you, I'm sure you would find There's folks who got troubles worse that yours and mine. CHORUS: I'm fresh out of prison. Six years in the pen. Lost my wife and family, no one to call friend. Don't tell me your troubles, 'cause you're not alone. Be thankful you're living. Drink up and go home. Now there stands a blind man, a man who can't see. Yet he's not complaining. Why should you or me? Don't tell me your troubles. Got enough of my own. Be thankful you're living. Drink up and go home. I've just got time for one more round. Set 'em up, my friend, then I'll be gone, And you can let some other fool sit down. I'd like for you to listen to a joke I heard today, From a woman who said she was through and calmly walked away. I tried to smile, and did awhile, but it felt so out of place. Did you ever hear of a clown with teardrops streaming down his face? CHORUS Home for me is misery and here I'm wasting time, 'Cause a row of fools on a row of stools is not what's on my mind, But then, you see, her leaving me is not what I prefer, So it's either here just drinking beer or home rememberin' her. Softly in the dark we cling together And I never wanted any woman more. Your eyes tell me that it would be so easy And I tell myself no-one will ever know Here we are so close to love it scares me And here I am a long long way from home. Chorus And I know that we could spend the night together I can see the love light in your eyes And I know that it would feel so good to love you But just because it feels good, that don't make it right. It's closing time, the place is almost empty And we walk towards the door side by side. I can almost feel you lying warm beside me As I kiss your lips, should I say goodnight? Repeat Chorus. BLACKBOARD OF MY HEART (Hank Thompson - Lyle Gaston) « © '56 Brazos Valley Music » When I was young and I went to school, they taught me how to write, To take the chalk and make a mark and hope it turns out right. Well that's the way it is with love and what you did to me. I wrote it so you'd know that I was yours eternally. CHORUS: But my tears have washed "I love you" from the blackboard of my heart. It's too late to clean the slate and make another start. I'm satisfied the way things are although we're far apart. My tears have washed "I love you" from the blackboard of my heart. If you'd been true the way you should, and not have gone astray, Those tears would not have fallen down and washed the words away. No need to talk, for if the chalk should write those words again, It will be for someone else, not things that might have been. CHORUS [Recorded by Hank Thompson.] |

You've shamed me till I feel about one inch tall. But I thought I loved you, and I hoped you would change, So I gritted my teeth and didn't complain. Now you've come to me with a simple goodbye. You tell me you're leaving, but you won't tell me why. We're here at the station and you're getting on. And all I can think of is... Thank God and Greyhound you're gone! Thank God and Greyhound you're gone! I didn't know how much longer I could go on, Watching you take the respect out of me, Watching you make a total wreck out of me. That big diesel motor is a playing my song. Thank God and Greyhound you're gone! Thank God and Greyhound you're gone! That load on my mind got lighter when you got on. That shiny old bus is a beautiful sight, With the black smoke rolling up around the tail lights. It may sound kinda cruel, but I've been silent too long: Thank God and Greyhound you're gone! Thank God and Greyhound you're gone! [Recorded by Roy Clark.] |

Subject: Lyr Add: SHE'S GOT YOU (Hank Cochran) From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Feb 05 - 08:22 PM Mentioned by GUEST,Russ above: SHE'S GOT YOU (Hank Cochran) I've got your picture that you gave to me, And it's signed "with love," just like it used to be. The only thing different, the only thing new: I've got your picture; she's got you. I've got the records that we used to share, And they still sound the same as when you were here. The only thing different, the only thing new: I've got the records; she's got you. I've got your memory, or has it got me? I really don't know, but I know it won't let me be. I've got your class ring that proved you cared, And it still looks that same as when you gave it, dear. The only thing different, the only thing new: I've got these little things; she's got you. [Recorded by Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, LeAnn Rimes, Dottie West, Lee Ann Womack, and several others.] |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHY DON'T WE GET DRUNK (AND SCREW) From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Feb 05 - 08:09 PM Mentioned by Sean M. above: WHY DON'T WE GET DRUNK (AND SCREW) by "Marvin Gardens"—[pseudonym of Jimmy Buffett?] I really do, appreciate the fact you're sittin' here. Your voice sounds so wonderful, but your face don't look too clear. So barmaid, bring a pitcher, another round of brew. Honey, why don't we get drunk and screw? Why don't we get drunk and screw? I just bought a waterbed. It's filled up for me and you. They say you are a snuff queen. Honey, I don't think that's true, So why don't we get drunk and screw? [Recorded by Jimmy Buffett on "You Had to Be There," 1978; and "Hits of Jimmy Buffett," 1994.] |

Subject: RE: Honky Tonk Drinking Songs From: Bill D Date: 09 Feb 05 - 11:01 PM you gotta read the dates on these threads, folks... all those songs I noted above are still there...but at the new site noted by Lin....you go in the front door, then look for the list of authors or titles... and if you use JetAudio or Real Alternative, you don't have to see Real Player in order to hear them. |
Subject: RE: Honky Tonk Drinking Songs From: Lin in Kansas Date: 09 Feb 05 - 10:07 PM Hey, how come no one has given a link to the Record Lady's site? She's got scads of this old good stuff! Anything George Jones does is a cryin' in my beer song--the man could sing the telephone book and make you sob. Thanks for starting this thread, Guest Frankie. I'd forgotten about some of these. Another good one to listen to (and relatively new to the country scene) is Gary Allen. He's the guy who did "Don't Tell Mama I Was Drinking," "Smoke Rings in the Dark" and "Bourbon Borderline," just to mention three of his songs that would fit this thread. Keep on boot-scootin'! Lin |
Subject: RE: Honky Tonk Drinking Songs From: Once Famous Date: 09 Feb 05 - 09:39 PM Jim I didn't read the whole thread, just kind of came in where you started listing some of these great country tunes. How about: Pop-a-Top by Jim Ed Brown If you've Got the Money by Lefty Frizzell My Bucket's Got a Hole In it by Hank Williams |
Subject: Lyr Add: SWINGING DOORS (Merle Haggard) From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Feb 05 - 09:06 PM I was unable to find a song called CLOSING TIME recorded by Merle Haggard, but he did record a song called SWINGING DOORS that repeats the line "I'm always here till closing time," so I assume that's the one that Armen Tanzerian had in mind. At any rate, Frogmore also recommended SWINGING DOORS. SWINGING DOORS Merle Haggard G CCHORUS: And I've got swinging doors, a jukebox, and a barstool, And my new home has got a flashing neon sign. Stop by and see me anytime you want to, 'Cause I'm always here at home till closing time. I've got everything I need to drive me crazy. I've got everything it takes to lose my mind; And in here, the atmosphere's just right for heartaches, And, thanks to you, I'm always here till closing time. CHORUS Yeah, I'm always here at home till closing time. |
Subject: RE: Honky Tonk Drinking Songs From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Feb 05 - 08:51 PM This was also mentioned by Armen Tanzerian above, but I was unable to find the lyrics on the Internet, so I transcribed a bit from a sound sample. Looks like it would be a good addition to our collection: WALLS OF THIS OLD HONKY-TONK (excerpt) Red Steagall, G. Sutton If ever'thing that goes on in this place was ever known, Well, I hope I'm in Alaska, just a little southeast o' Nome, 'Cause the one I love'd snap my neck just like a piece of chalk If the walls of this ol' honky-tonk ever learned to talk. They're watchin' me cheat on you. They hear ever'thing I say…. [Recorded by Red Steagall on an LP, "Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music," 1976; which was reissued in 2000 as a CD combined with another album "For All Our Cowboy Friends."] |

Subject: Lyr Add: WURLITZER PRIZE (I DON'T WANT TO GET...) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Feb 05 - 07:08 PM Mentioned by Mark Clark back near the beginning of this thread. THE WURLITZER PRIZE (I DON'T WANT TO GET OVER YOU) (Chips Moman, Bobby Emmons) I'm not here to forget you. I'm here to recall The things we used to say and do. I don't want to get over you. I don't want to get over you. I haunt the same places we used to go, Alone at a table for two. I don't want to get over you. I don't want to get over you. They ought to give me the Wurlitzer prize For all the silver I let slide down the slot Playing those songs sung blue. They help me remember you. I don't want to get over you. A fresh roll of quarters‚ same old song, Missing you through and through. I don't want to get over you. I don't want to get over you. They ought to give me the Wurlitzer prize For all the silver I let slide down the slot Playing those songs sung blue. They help me remember you. I don't want to get over you. I don't want to get over you. I don't want to get over you. [Recorded by Waylon Jennings, Norah Jones, and Willie Nelson.] |
