Subject: Summer Camp Songs From: RangerSteve Date: 11 Oct 01 - 09:26 AM While preparing for a 50 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail, my dad (and scout master) found a book of British Boy Scout camp songs. This one got us through some really grueling climbs through the Kittatinny Mountains in northern New Jersey, sung to the tune of "Rally 'Round the Flag". Anybody got any others to add? Mary had a little lamb and then she had some more, Shouting out the battle cry of freedom. The teacher said you've had enough, you'd better hold your jaw, Shouting out the battle cry of freedom. CHORUS: Hurrah for Mary, Hurrah for the lamb, Hurrah for the little girl who didn't care a little bit. And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go, Shouting out the battle cry of freedom 'Twas the Schooner Hesperus that sailed the stormy sea, Mary took her lamb along to keep her company She sat it on the binnacle, the fishes danced with glee, Shouting out the battle cry of freedom CHORUS Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard to satisfy her needs, She opened the lock and Oh, what a shock, the dog began to sneeze For waltzing around the cupboard was a gorganzola cheese, Shouting out the battle cry of freedom. CHORUS |

Subject: RE: Summer Camp Songs From: Mark Cohen Date: 11 Oct 01 - 01:55 PM Steve, I learned the chorus from Ed Silberman as: Hurrah for Mary, hurrah for the lamb Hurrah for the Fenian boys who did not give a damn And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go Shouting the battle cry of freedom I have a suspicion that this song may come from the Civil War, and that "Fenian" may have originally been "Union". I'd be interested if anyone could confirm or deny that. It's been so long ago that I can't remember any of the verses that Ed sang. Of course, this is not to be confused with: Mary had a little lamb, the doctors were surprised But when Old MacDonald had a farm, they couldn't believe their eyes Aloha, Mark |
