I am trying to learn the guitar part for this one, but it is giving me some trouble. Can anyone help me out with the chords? I would also like to know some of the other verses that are out there.

Thanks for the help Andrew

Hi Andrew S -

This site has words to a version by Tampa Red (one of my favorite bluesmen), and a lot of other good lyrics:

DuckYasYasYas

Can't help you with the chords though.

Mary

Missed that one...

Well, I just listen to my tape, and the guitar part is perfect DVR: I could work on this fancy fingerpicking all my life time, and of course never get it. It's that trick on the bass notes I can't figure out. BUT, here's the chords, with capo on the first fret:

(A)Mama bought a rooster, (F#m) she thought it was a duck.
(B7)She brought him to the table with his legs straight up.
(E)In came the children with the cup and a glass,
(A)To catch the liquor from his yas yas yas.

The turn around on the last line goes like this (single notes, add half tone with the capo, and alternate bass A/E): A, C#, D, D#,E, D, C#, A.
Singing over this will give you hours of happiness!

SP

Lyrics copied from http://www.luckymojo.com/bluesduckyasyasyastampa.html:

THE DUCK YAS-YAS-YAS
By Tampa Red and Georgia Tom Dorsey

Mama bought a rooster, she thought it was a duck.
She brought him to the table with his legs straight up.
In came the children with the cup and a glass,
To catch the liquor from his yas yas yas.

Babe, oh, babe, have you ever been to Spain?
See those hoodoo women, shakin' that thing.
They got rings on their fingers, bells on their toes.
What they've got good, babe, nobody knows.

I'm goin' down Market Street,
Where the men and women all do meet.
That's where the men do the Georgia Rub,
Women fall in line with a big washtub.

Me and my gal walkin' down the street.
She caught the rheumatism in her feet.
She stooped over to pick some grass,
And the same thing struck her in the yas yas yas.

You catch the train you call Forty-Nine,
Carries you down to Caroline.
You catch the train you call Forty-Eight,
Takes you right in to the Golden Gate.

You shake your shoulders, you shake 'em fast.
You can't shake your shoulders, shake your yas yas yas.
Drink some rooster soup before going to bed.
Wake up in the mornin', find your own self dead.

Down on Morgan there's a good location,
Right there next to a gasoline station.
That's where you'll get your car's oil and grease.
Women cryin', "Honey, won't you come in, please."

I'm gonna sing this verse, ain't gonna sing no more.
Somebody's knockin' on my door.
The people upstairs have gone to bed.
I'd better stop that noise 'fore they crack my head.

[Black blues singer-songwriter "Georgia Tom" Dorsey (1899-1993) later got religion and, as Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey, wrote several classic gospel songs, notably "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "Peace in the Valley". Not to be confused with the white trombonist-bandleader Tommy Dorsey (1905-56).]

I found the Dave Van Ronk version here :

Yas Yas Yas

Mama bought a chicken; well, she thought it was a duck,
Put him on the table with his legs stickin' up.
Well, now, in comes sis with a spoon and a glass
And starts dishin' out the gravy from his yas-yas-yas.

Mama, mama, take a look at sis.
You know she's out on the levee and she's dancin' like this.
Well now, come on in here, sis, and come in here fast,
And stop that shakin' your yas-yas-yas.

Well, the old folks do it and the young folks, too,
And the old folks show the young folks just what to do.
Well now, you shake your shoulders, you shake 'em fast,
And if you can't shake your shoulders, shake your yas-yas-yas.

Well, Mr. Dillinger rode up to a gasoline station.
He says, "This looks like a pretty good location."
Well, the attendant says, "Do you want my gas?"
"Well, it's either your gas or your yas-yas-yas."

'Way down yonder in St. Augustine,
You know, a black cat sat down on a sewin' machine.
Well now, you know, that machine, it sewed so fast,
It sewed ninety-nine stitches in his yas-yas-yas.

'Twas the night before Christmas; all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
Well now, out on the lawn there rose a big crash.
It was Santa Claus slidin' on his yas-yas-yas.

As near as I can recall(I learned this almost 40 years ago off the record), the chords are;

C    A7    D7    G7
//    //    ////       ////

C(C7)   F(F#dim)    G7    C
/            /                     /       /

@simon-pierre - I have been searching for this particular version for a while! Unfortunately, that link is dead, if you ever read this, could you email it to me? Thanks!

Nevermind! It's on a Folkways compilation and I found it quite easily, it has been a while since I've looked for it!

Best,,

Diz Disley used to do the Dave Van Ronk version. I often wondered who wrote it.
