Subject: fishing blues and sunday street

Hello all I was wondering if someone could assist me with the lyrics for two old blues songs. Fishing Blues (from the Harry Smith Anthology) and Sunday Street (I know Dave Van Ronk performed it) aren't in the database, i would appreciate any assistance. Thanks

There's a version of the lyrics to "Fishin' Blues" here in the Forum. Great tune.

The "Sunday Street" that Pene Azul posted links to isn't the same song that Dave Van Ronk recorded.

At Yahoo! Music I found sound samples of 2 different recordings by Dave Van Ronk and one by Choo Choo Charlie Williams. Piecing them together, I was able to come up with this much of a transcription:

...Sunday Street.
I'll get a pair o' dice that makes me seven all the time.
Gonna be livin' on chicken an' wine.
I want caviar, four-star, Johnnie Walker Black,
Six pretty women in my gold Cadillac.
I wanta move where the livin' is ...

Anybody else discover a tab or some playing hints for Sunday Street?
I kind of think Dave played it in dropped D, but I'm not the real expert.
Any offers?
Thanks
Mark

Van Ronk actually wrote Sunday Street - at least the Sunday Street that he recorded. I will transcribe and post the lyrics over the next day or two. Stefan Grossman (www.guitarvideos.com) sells some tape lessons (audio & video, both) of Van Ronk. I particularly like the audio tape series (6 cassettes) both for the lessons and for listening to Van Ronk speak in a way only he could. The audio lessons are so detailed, that you simply cannot miss learning Sunday Street or any of the other 15-20 songs.

Thanks. I will be very much obliged. I have been to many Van Ronk shows, and even heard him lecture once at a local college. He really continues to be missed.

SUNDAY STREET
Written by Dave Van Ronk
As sung by Dave Van Ronk in a live performance on YouTube

1. Not a dollar, not a nickel, not a penny to my name,
The king o' Tap City an' I'm out o' the game.
A nickel up, a nickel down, another nickel gone,
Ain't got a nickel left to carry me on.
If I ever get back on my feet,
I'll move from Saturday Alley up to Sunday Street.

2. I'll get a pair o' dice that makes me seven all the time.
Gonna be livin' on chicken an' wine.
I want caviar, four-star, an' Johnny Walker Black,
Six pretty women in my gold Cadillac.
I'm gonna move where the livin' is sweet
From Saturday Alley up to Sunday Street.

3. My hands are shakin' an' I ain't feelin' well
From drinkin' King Kong liquor, cheap muscatel,
But a little taste o' bourbon an' breakfast in bed,
An' six pretty women [would raise] the dead.
Ah, me an' the other elite
Raisin' high-class hell up on Sunday Street.

4. Ev'rybody says I'm talkin' out o' my head,
But nobody bad-mouths the man with the bread,
An' all the whores are gonna drop their drawers
An' say, "There goes the man who mugged Santa Claus."
It pays to be discreet
When you're talkin' to the king of Sunday Street.

REPEAT VERSE 1.

[Also sung by Choo Choo Charlie Williams & Baltimore Red Jones on "Gutbucket Blues" (1999).]
