Subject: New Jersey towns
From: GUEST,Pete Dodenhoff
Date: 19 Mar 01 - 03:54 PM

I'm trying to remember (and get the music/lyrics to) a song, maybe 20 years old, whose lyrics were almost entirely made up of the names of cities and towns in New Jersey (like Hoboken, Ho-Ho-Kus, Whippany, Parsippany, Matawan, Manasquan, etc). The song might've been by Leon Redbone, maybe Dave Van Ronk, but I'm not really sure. Any help in tracking down the song and its authorship would sure be appreciated. Pete

It's the "Garden State Stomp" and I know that Dave Van Ronk recorded it. Not sure if he also wrote it.

Pete, there also was a discussion or digression about this song in a recent thread entitled RIVERS OF NEW JERSEY; set the filter box for this title and for 30 days ago.

It is Dave Van Ronk. Have never been able to figure out the chords, let alone the words. I don't think he wrote it. It is on his Going Back to Brooklyn CD. I heard him do it live once, after which someone yelled out, "What exit?"
