Subject: Dave Van Ronk's last concert From: Backstage Manager(inactive) Date: 22 Jun 04 - 08:38 AM ...and the tin pan bended, and the story ended... is the title of the CD of Dave Van Ronk's final concert, recorded on October 22, 2001. Dave had received his cancer diagnosis the day before and knew it would be his last gig before beginning treatment. As heard on the CD, it is a magnificent performance filled with 14 songs and lots of stories. The playing, and singing, are superb, and Dave's stories, about old blues masters like Clarence Williams, Mississippi John Hurt and Josh White, about his early years in Greenwich Village, etc. are riveting. I've been listening to the CD constantly since receiving my advance copy. It'll be released for sale next Tuesday June 29, the day before the naming ceremony for Dave Van Ronk Street on Sheridan Square in the Village. Dave was a good friend for many, many years. He was one of my favorite people to sit up with all night, alternately listening to music and talking books and politics. Never both at the same time. One of the things that I learned from Dave, maybe 30 years ago, is that if the music is worth listening to, you give it your total attention. This new CD demands that total attention. |

Subject: RE: Dave Van Ronk's last concert From: DonMeixner Date: 22 Jun 04 - 06:26 PM I sat in an audience Happy Endings in Syracuse, NY with about 25 other lucky people to hear two sets of Dave on his big old Guild guitar. He mentioned people he knew, knows, and misses and played beyond amazing for about 1 1/2 hours. Any time you could have heard the names John Hurt, Gary Davis, Danny Kalb and Snaker Dave Ray mentioned in the same show by someone who knows or knew them, it's a show that you should have attended. He played all their songs and all of his. It was a magical evening for me. When we left I said to Dave, "I finally got to see you live. Great show." He said, "What took you so long?" I said , "No excuses." And he said, "Well we'll see you next tine around then." He died with that year. Don |

Subject: RE: Dave Van Ronk's last concert From: Mark Cohen Date: 23 Jun 04 - 02:13 AM I remember seeing him at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, Pa., around 1970 or '71. One of many unforgettable moments at that magical place. I remember him talking about how he learned "Candy Man" from Rev. Gary Davis, and asking him what some of the lyrics meant. Rev. Davis replied, "You'll understand when you're older!" Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Dave Van Ronk's last concert From: Backstage Manager(inactive) Date: 29 Jun 04 - 08:02 AM Just one correction to my original post at the head of this thread. I said that Dave had received his cancer diagnosis the day before it was recorded. In fact, Dave received his diagnosis the day before leaving to do several gigs that culminated with the concert recording four days later. |
