Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: GUEST,Marion Date: 29 Aug 02 - 06:15 PM Clarification to question 3: Not that I'm contemplating bootlegging Jed's CD myself. But my initial reaction when I read his liner notes was that he was giving his blessing to copying the CD, and I'm wondering if that's the interpretation he was going for. 4. What is the connection that Rick is making between Jed and Lisa Simpson? Is it just the fact that they look so much alike? Marion |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Rick Fielding Date: 29 Aug 02 - 07:18 PM Jed! Answer yer friggin' thread!! WHAT connection am I making with Lisa Simpson? I'm too lazy to read back all my posts in this thread....please clarify. Cheers Rick |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Jeri Date: 29 Aug 02 - 08:31 PM Rick, you said "Picture Tex Ritter meets The Chieftans meets Ozzie Osbourne meets Yma Sumach meets Lisa Simpson meets meatloaf." I got the Lisa Simpson reference just fine. I don't understand Ozzie though. Might have had something to do with the way he was eating shrimp in the Chinese restaurant. I'd hate to see what he does with crawdads in Louisianna. ("NO, Jed - first the ass, THEN the head!") |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Rick Fielding Date: 30 Aug 02 - 09:48 AM Ahhhh yes......in a political thread from several months ago, Jed said "I don't need LISA SIMPSON to tell me about morality!" (or something like that) Cheers Rick (c'mon Jed we're talkin' about ya behind yer back!) |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Marion Date: 30 Aug 02 - 07:24 PM Jeez Rick, did you have your memory surgically removed as well? I don't begrudge having to footnote one of your statements when it's from a different thread and a long time back (as I did in the "Do you need a car..." thread which you've no doubt totally forgotten), but I'm not going to footnote something you wrote in this thread a month ago. However, in the interests of full disclosure... my curiousity about the Jed-Lisa link is not that profound. Really, I just wanted another question to ask so that I could refresh this in a more subtle way than saying "Answer yer friggin' thread!*" Marion * Quote from Fielding, 29-Aug-02 - 07:18 PM |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Liam's Brother Date: 30 Aug 02 - 08:09 PM Best of luck with the new recording. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole CD. All the best, Dan |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Jeri Date: 31 Aug 02 - 09:05 AM Well, it's later and Jed's still elsewhere. Let me just say that Jed's rendition of "My Boyfriend's Back" - done completely in falsetto - is beyond belief! I wasn't sure it would work, especially not with Rick & Mick doing the "Hey la" bits, but they were fine. |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Rick Fielding Date: 31 Aug 02 - 11:09 AM Hmmmmmmm.....ok, how about this plan? We'll just keep refreshing this bit of free "Jedvertising" until he DOES notice it!

Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Big Mick Date: 31 Aug 02 - 11:25 AM I didn't mind singing the "hey la" bits, but the damn bouffant blonde wig, pink chiffon mini, and the gold lame pumps were a bit much, don'cha think, Jeri? Mick |

Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 31 Aug 02 - 08:57 PM Sorry - been outta town! Just got back and got a real belly laugh out of a couple of these comments - but first to the questions! marion - the CD is recorded and mastered. I have made a very few copies for NON-published distribution purposes but expect to release at the end of Sept. I don't have any more detail then that, yet. "blood upon the rose" reference was made by the authors of the song, GRACE to a line from a poem written by the subject of the song, Joseph Plunkett. Joseph was a Catholic mystic a poet and scholar. He was executed for his leadership role in the failed Easter Rebellion of 1916 - but was allowed to marry his sweatheart, Grace Gifford on the eve of his death. He is said to have penned that poem on the walls of the jail cell. It is a lovely poem, and would have been widely known to his consituency before the song was written. Seamus Kennedy did a beautiful job of both the poem and the song on his album, A SMILE AND A TEAR. Share the music - please with as many of your friends as wish. But I must admit, I would prefer you did so legally! ;-) Art - I would be honored to send you a copy! Please PM me with your mailing addr and I'll make that right ASAP! Jeri - I laughed my ass off! Mick you too! Now I lost my place ... where was I? |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 31 Aug 02 - 09:09 PM Dan - you know I've been telling my friends about the great time I had in Toronto making the record with Paul, picking and visiting quite a bit with Rick and seeing Marion, Mick, Jeri and others ... one of the real treats for me was being steeped in the "spirits" of the place - and sleeping in Paul's studio, I was right next to Stan Roger's beautiful Laskin 12 string guitar. I think Paul left it next to the bed on purpose, case open ... and it would talk to me every night! "Hey Jed, come and play me!" it would say ... so over course I did. Every time I walked near it! Paul and I put a lot of thought into which song would be best for using that guitar - and we chose yours; The Sons of Liberty. Paul played it on the track, and we arranged the complimentary guitar parts so that Paul was using Stan's typical DADGAD tuning. I hope you like our treatment of your song. I love it. And LISA SIMPSON???? |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 01 Sep 02 - 12:13 AM oh, and polyp? Well - my doctor said I had a nodule on my left chord, shrugged it off and said "I'm not worried about it, I've seen a lot worse." I'm not sure what the hell that means, but I've been managing, though I've definately lost some ability and need to be very careful about how I use my voice, these days. I figure the nodule on my left chord is to balance me out for the spermatocil I have on my right testical! My doctor was equally flip about that, saying; "it'll probably only get bigger. If it bothers you we can do a bit of surgury but it's doing no harm." Since I've developed he nodule at least I can walk a straight line again. |

Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 01 Sep 02 - 12:23 PM Sure Amos - what's the schedule for the MC CD? |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Marion Date: 01 Sep 02 - 01:18 PM Thanks for the update, Jed. Naturally I intend to spread the word about you legally... just wanted to let you know of a highly possible misinterpretation of your words. I searched for that poem and found that it was the one I had seen before. That's a great song and story.
I see His Blood Upon the Rose Marion

Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 01 Sep 02 - 06:04 PM Marion - I hope you hear Seamus's treatment of the song/poem one day. He did a fine job. I heard about the song before I ever heard it, because I had been reading some history about the Black and Tan era, about Michael Collns and the about the Irish Civil War. All three of those histories mentioned the story about Plunkett, the poem and the O'Meara brother's song (GRACE) - so I went looking for a recording of it. I am asked to sing the song pretty regularly, and often by folks who have no interest in Irish history. They are moved by the story and the beauty of the song. |

Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 30 Sep 02 - 08:00 PM I believe we'll be in manufacturing this week, so soon; very soon! |

Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: GUEST,Jim Hanlon Date: 01 Nov 02 - 04:30 AM Hello Jed, I started a new project with Paul following yours. Paul played me a few tracks of your CD and they were brilliant. I'd love to to get a copy when it's released. Regards, Jim Hanlon |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: GUEST,Cookieless Big Mick Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:49 AM You won't regret working with Paul, Jim. He has that gift of getting the best out of you. It is why he is such a great producer. "Soul of a Wanderer" is, indeed, a brilliant piece of work. The Mills/Marum collaboration was a stroke of genius on the part of Rick Fielding. Rick heard Jed's first CD and just had a feeling that Paul and Jed would click. This CD is a testament to Rick's intuition in these matters, as well as to Jed's superb talent at creating lyrical imagery and then interpreting those images vocally. Couple this all up with Paul and Bev's ability to make you feel comfortable and then pull the very best you have to give, and you have a CD that will entertain while making some profound observations. In short, buy it folks. You will be very glad you did. Mick |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:33 AM Hello Jim - best of luck on your project with Paul and thanks for your comments. The album is just this week going out. It will be available on-line as early as next week, but probably mid-Nov. If you send me an mail at music@jedmarum.com we can exhange info - and I can get you a CD. Thanks for asking! As Mick said (thanks Mick) Paul is a treat to work with. Very professional, very helpful, very objective and diplomatic at telling you when you're wrong (not that you ever will be. of course) and very gracious about being over ruled if you think you need to do so - these were important qualities to me on my project. On top of that, he's just damn good at what he does! He's a great guy, and that's a good thing because you'll spend a lot of time with him!! And Bev (his wife and soul mate) is a peach - a sweeet and interested woman with a fine sense of fun and humor. I am sure you'll be happy with the results of your project. |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Tinker Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:02 AM Okay, I'm not a professional and as much as I enjoy the results don't quite get the tecnical end of all this..... but I brought a copy home from Getaway.... one of the signed advanced copies Jed was nice enought to donate to the auction.... and It has me dancing through the kitchen. Now understand I hate housework... this is no mean feat. .. Thanks Jed.. Missed you at Getaway..... |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:18 AM I enjoyed Streets of Fall River, I'll have to get hold of this one too, I guess. Will it be carried by CDBaby? RtS |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: GUEST Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:19 AM Thanks Jed, I'll send you off an email. I've been a fan of Paul for a long time through his work with Stan. I first met him four years ago at the Stan Rogers festival. We did a few slots together and it was the buzz of a lifetime. We'd been talking about recording together since then. Wish I hadn't waited so long but really happy we've started. The recording session at his studio was a thrill. Fantastic people and a superb place to work on a project. I wish I'd met him before I recorded my earlier music. First class all the way both as a person and musician/producer. Bev was wonderful and I can't wait to get back and finish the CD. I look forward to hearing all of your project. Thanks for the reply. Very best regards, Jim Hanlon |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Art Thieme Date: 01 Nov 02 - 11:49 AM YES, this is a wonderful piece of work. Completely genuine and musically fantastic backup from Curly Boy Mills and everyone else to boot. And this album is all JED MARUM !!!! The wonderfully tasteful yet very present backup helps with the lovely flow of the whole creation, but this is all, as I said, Jed's record. His voice and presentation are up front, just about perfect, and still, doesn't get in the way of the story he is telling with the fine words he has put together. For me, the story in a song has always been paramount----and the poem has a tune to help in it's telling. Here, though, both tune and tale make this entire creation more than the sum of it's marvelous parts. And the listener is the winner here. You all are taking no chance at all when you pick up this CD. Jed was grand enough to send me this before the fact of it's manufacture, so I feel a bit like I've been there in Toronto with you all for what sounds to me, from all I have read in this thread, like these were times you all want to hold and preserve in your mind's ear and eye. Folks, there are so many here at Mudcat that I have come to know and TRUST. Mick and Rick, Kat and Kendall, Dan Milner and Amos and Harpgirl ---- and of course the friends for years like Jean and George, Sandy and Caroline, Frank and Mary Hamilton, Roy and Elaine Harris-----------so many others from around the various scenes who have told me they lurk here. (My Canadian experiences were mostly in Winnipeg.) But from one folkie to another, I think you can believe what you read here. Jed Marum has made this project a real labor of love. I do think you'll enjoy what you will hear on this CD. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: JedMarum Date: 06 Nov 02 - 12:49 PM Thanks Art and all for the kind words! I've been away from MudCat for a bit and haven't seen this thread in a while. I have released the album last week to the US and Canada. It has begun to get just a tiny bit of airplay here and there, so if you listen to your favorite radio show, you may hear it - especially if you request something from it! ;-) It will be going out to Ireland and elsewhere later his week. Please let me know if you do hear tracks from the record on-air. Many DJs don't bother with playlists, so it's really hard for me to know where the album is playing. Soul of a Wanderer is available on Amazon.com or CDBaby.com (CDBaby is probably the beter deal) or you can send me a PM through Mudcat. Thanks again. |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Rick Fielding Date: 06 Nov 02 - 02:43 PM I can't say too much about this 'cause my involvement makes for a bit of a conflict of interest......BUT.....IT'S GREAT! Cheers Rick |
Subject: RE: Jed's new CD, Toronto, Friends From: Glen Reid Date: 06 Nov 02 - 04:55 PM Just got a copy of Jed's new CD and was really impressed. I love the qaulity of this guys voice and his choice of material. I especially enjoyed "The Banks Of The MObile" Hats of to Paul MIlls for the engineering and production values. Congradulations, Jed All the best, Glen |
