Just wondering if anyone has the lyrics (and maybe chords --though they're easy, if you rememember the tune) to Kate Wolf's song "Weaverville."

Every time I drive by Weaverville, I think of this song.

Darn, I thought that was written by Kate Wolf, but it's in the Digital Tradition (click), and shown as written by Jim Ringer/Mary McCaslin. I guess it does sound like a Ringer/McCaslin song.
Can't find the chords, though.
I used to think of it every time I drove by Weaverville, too; but I don't get up there very often any more.

I can't believe I actually started this thread without checking the DT. (Despite what some of you may think, I am in the habit of checking the Filter and the DT/Forum search first. But this time, I don't recall looking under "W" first.) And it was only 12:10 AM PDT, too!

Anyway, thanks for the tip, Joe. I think I originally thought that Kate didn't write it but folks had convinced me I was wrong. The song always seemed different from her the songs she sang that I knew she had written.

HI Genie. I wrote this song in frank imitation of "Weaverville." I admire Mary and she has been ill with pneumonia and has lots of medical bills.

The Downieville Nugget by harpgirl

Come gather round people I've a story to tell
About a gambler from Reno that I know so well
In a card game in Reno he bragged he could steal
A nugget of gold in old Downieville

Eleven pounds weighed that nugget
Makin Downieville's name
A subject of interest
In a thousand card games

Then a bushwhacker challenged him
To show proof of his claim
Bring the Downieville Nugget
Back here to this game

Oh a gambler loves a challenge
He lives for a thrill
No woman could hold him
With a dare to fulfill

He rode into our city that very next day
And from his bold purpose he could not be swayed
Down into the valley in the old mining town
Tin roofs on the houses shown bright in the sun

We met by the river and he spun his bold tale
He thrilled me with stories till tremblin I fell
Oh a gambler is charmin I fear that I'm right
He takes what he wishes don't put up a fight

He saw that huge nugget in the old courthouse safe
In Judge Downie's chambers that very same night

He showed back in Reno
One week to the day
Smilin a wide smile the bushwhackers say

Boys I didn't get it, I lied for the thrill
But I got me a lady in old Downieville
I'm gonna get rich boys and straight way go round
To stake my claim on that lady I found

Well the boys had their laugh
But the gambler laughed to
Sayin deal me a hand boys I've gamblin to do

Next spring he went a courtin in Downieville town
It was Judge Downie's daughter
Who finally came round

He married her proper where they met by the shore
Laughin and lovin e'r after and more
Oh a gambler loves a challenge I know awfully well
I'm the old judges's daughter

A gambler myself

ha that's a good one harp girl... not sure if the chords will line up where i typed themmm...but .... here are the chords for Kate's song book/// key F# minor

WEAVERVILLE (Jim Ringer/Mary McCaslin) A I'll tell you 'bout a gambler, folks, F#m Jim Weaver was his name D A I don't know where he came from; F#m gambling was his trade D A Ride in here close be-side me; E I'll tell you 'bout a game D A Damndest game in all my years D E F#m I ever did see played A Some said they'd seen him play before, F#m down on the Barbary Coast D A He said it might be true enough; E he'd gambled all around D A Lost his stake to a Jack-high straight, D E down at Sutter's Post D A But he'd kept a little poke, D E in case of a game within our town A And a lady loves a gambler, running loose, F#m D roaming free And I felt my heart beat A F#M faster when I turned around to see D E F#m He was looking hard at me

The game was held in Daddy's tent --

an honest man, you know

And all the boys in town were set

to take Jim Weaver's poke

For digging gold is hard as Hell,

and panning is too slow

And I saw Jim Weaver smiling, small,

at some little private joke

By midnight he had all the gold

the boys in town had saved

And they never caught him cheating,

though they watched him all the while

And he never lost a single hand

in any game he played

And he never lost a dollar,

and he never lost his smile

And a lady loves a gambler, smiling free, smiling wide And I knew I'd never rest 'til I was smiling by his side Smiling as we ride

When all the gold they'd got was gone, they wanted still to play So they asked Jim Weaver what was left to gamble in the game He said he'd cut high cards, one time, and if he lost, he'd pay But if he won, they had to swear to give the town his name

And he told my Daddy he would bet ten dollars on the side And I could be my Daddy's stake, if I did so agree And I rode out of Weaverville next morning as his bride And left the town that bears the name of the gambling man -- and me (last chorus: spoken) For a lady loves a gambler; if he cheats it's just the same And no one saw me slip to him the ace that won the game And gave the town our name And gave the town our name
