I didn't know what "table d'hôte" (from "The Lonely Goatherd") means, so I looked it up. Here's the definition from this page – http://www.foodtv.com/terms/tt-r2/0,4474,423,00.html:

Definition: [tah-buhl DOHT] This French term literally means "the table of the host." On restaurant menus, however, table d'hôte refers to a complete meal of several courses for the price of the entrée. See also à la carte; prix fixe.

I have "Edelweiss" on my web page, and sometimes people ask me for the 'original' Austrian folk version.

Snicker.

Moonbeam, here are the Edelweiss lyrics in the DT, including a German translation.

Also, here is a previous thread " Lyr/Chords Req: My Favorite Things." It gives the RUS version of the chords.

Gargoyle, a lot of people have access to Rise Up Singing without owning it. (When I go to jams and song circles, there are usually several copies there.) Also, I'm continually finding things in my Rise Up Singing book that I did not know were there. (There are so many songs in it that it's easy to overlook or forget what's there.)

Anyway, this would hardly be the first time a Lyr/Chords Req. thread has yielded a reference to a songbook.

But, dear Garg, bless you for posting the lyrics and chords to so many of the SOM songs! Profuse thanks!

And thanks to you for the links, too, George.

FWIW, as usual, the RUS chords are a little simpler than the ones you'll find in most sheet music (and the ones Gargoyle posted). E.g., "My Favorite Things," per RUS, uses only the Em chord for the first line and only the Cmaj7 chord for the second line. I play it that way all the time and it sounds fine to me (although I can 'hear' it with the E9, too).

And if you are missing any of the lyrics you want (Gargoyle's looks pretty complete), you can check these two sites. They don't have chords however.

SOUND OF MUSIC
Copyright 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein

Edelweiss

(Bb)Edel(F7)weiss, (Bb)Edel (Eb)weiss
(Bb)Every (Gm7)morning you (Cm7)greet (F7)me
(Bb)Small and (F7)white, (Bb)clean and bright
(Bb)You look (F7)happy to (Bb)meet me

(F7)Blossom of snow may you (Bb)bloom and grow
(Eb)Bloom and (C7)grow for(F)ev(F7)er

(Bb)Edel(Fm6)weiss, (Eb)Edelweiss
(Bb)Bless my (F7)homeland (Bb)forever

The Sound of Music

(F6) The hills are alive (Fmaj7) with the sound of (E)music
(F6/9)With songs they have (F6)sung for a thousand (Bb)years
(C)The (F6)hills fill my (Fmaj7)heart with the sound of(E) music
(F)My heart wants to (Bb)sing every (C)song (C7)it (F)hears

(F)My heart wants to (Bb)beat like the (Bbdim)wings of the (F)birds
that rise from the (Bb)lake to the (F)trees
(F)My (Bb)heart wants to sigh like a (F)chime that flies
from a (G7)church on a (C)breeze
(F)To (Bb)laugh like a brook when it (F)trips and falls over
(Bb)stones on its (F)way
(F)To (Dm)sing through the(Am)night like a (Dm)lark who is (G7)learning to (C)pray

I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
And I'll sing once more

Maria

She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee
Her dress has got a tear
She waltzes on her way to Mass
And whistles on the stair
And underneath her wimple
She has curlers in her hair
I even heard her singing in the abbey

She's always late for chapel
But her penitence is real
She's always late for everything
Except for every meal
I hate to have to say it
But I very firmly feel
Maria's not an asset to the abbey

I'd like to say a word in her behalf
Maria makes me laugh

(C)How do you solve a problem like Ma(G7)ria?
(C)How do you catch a cloud and pin it (G) (G7)down?
(C)How do you find a word that means (F)Maria?
A (D7)flibbertijibbet! A (Fm)will-o'-the wisp! A (Em)clown!

(C)Many a thing you know you'd like to (G7)tell her
(C)Many a thing she ought to under(Dm)stand
(Cm)But how do you make her stay
And (G7)listen to all you say
(Cm)How do you keep a wave upon the (G7)sand

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

When I'm with her I'm confused
Out of focus and bemused
And I never know exactly where I am
Unpredictable as weather
She's as flighty as a feather
She's a darling! She's a demon! She's a lamb!

She'd outpester any pest
Drive a hornet from its nest
She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle! She is wild!
She's a riddle! She's a child!
She's a headache! She's an angel!
She's a girl!

How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!

Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay
And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

My Favorite Things

(Em) Raindrops on (Em9) roses and (Em) whiskers on (Em9)kittens
(Cmaj7)Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
(Am7)Brown paper (D9)packages (G)tied up with (C)strings
(G)These are a (C)few of my (Am6)favorite (B7)things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

(Repeat all verses)

So Long, Farewell

Children:
There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say "cuckoo"
Marta, Gretl, Brigitta:
Cuckoo, cuckoo

Children:
Marta, Gretl, Brigitta:
Regretfully they tell us Cuckoo, cuckoo
But firmly they compel us Cuckoo, cuckoo
To say goodbye . . .
Marta, Gretl, Brigitta:

Cuckoo!
Children:
. . . to you

Children:
(C)So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night
Marta:

Something Good

Maria:
Perhaps I had a wicked childhood
Perhaps I had a miserable youth
But somwhere in my wicked, miserable past
There must have been a moment of truth

For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good

Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good

Captain:
For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should

Maria:
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good

Maria and the Captain:
Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could

Maria:
So somewhere in my youth
Captain:
Or childhood
Maria:
I must have done something . . .
Maria and the Captain:
Something good

Sixteen Going on Seventeen

Rolf: You wait, little girl, on an empty stage
For fate to turn the light on
Your life, little girl, is an empty page
That men will want to write on
Liesl: To write on

Rolf: (F)You are sixteen (C7)going on seventeen
(F)Baby, it's time to (Dm)think
(C9)Better beware, (F)be canny and careful
(Gm7)Baby, (G7)you're on the (C7) brink

You are sixteen going on seventeen
Fellows will fall in line
Eager young lads and rogues and cads
Will offer you food and wine

Totally unprepared are you
To face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared are you
Of things beyond your ken

You need someone older an wiser
Telling you what to do
I am seventeen going on eighteen
I'll take care of you

Liesl: I am sixteen going on seventeen
I know that I'm naive
Fellows I meet may tell me I'm sweet
And willingly I believe

I am sixteen going on seventeen
Innocent as a rose
Bachelor dandies, drinkers of brandies
What do I know of those

Totally unprepared am I
To face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared am I
Of things beyond my ken

I need someone older and wiser
Telling me what to do
You are seventeen going on eighteen
I'll depend on you

Sixteen Going on Seventeen

Maria: You are sixteen going on seventeen
Waiting for life to start
Somebody kind who touches your mind
Will suddenly touch your heart

Liesl:
When that happens, after it happens
Nothing is quite the same
Somehow I know I'll jump up and go
If ever he calls my name

Maria:
Gone are your old ideas of life The old ideas grow dim
Lo and behold you're someone's wife
And you belong to him

You may think this kind of adventure
Never may come to you
Darling sixteen going on seventeen

Wait a year . . .
Liesl:
I'll wait a year . . .
Maria:
Just wait a year . . .
Maria and Liesl:
Or two

I Have Confidence

What will this day be like? I wonder.
What will my future be? I wonder.
It could be so exciting to be out in the world, to be free
My heart should be wildly rejoicing
Oh, what's the matter with me?

I've always longed for adventure
To do the things I've never dared
And here I'm facing adventure
Then why am I so scared

A captain with seven children
What's so fearsome about that?

Oh, I must stop these doubts, all these worries
If I don't I just know I'll turn back
I must dream of the things I am seeking
I am seeking the courage I lack

The courage to serve them with reliance
Face my mistakes without defiance
Show them I'm worthy
And while I show them
I'll show me

So, let them bring on all their problems
I'll do better than my best
I have confidence they'll put me to the test
But I'll make them see I have confidence in me

Somehow I will impress them
I will be firm but kind
And all those children (Heaven bless them!)
They will look up to me

And mind me with each step I am more certain
Everything will turn out fine
I have confidence the world can all be mine
They'll have to agree I have confidence in me

I have confidence in sunshine
I have confidence in rain
I have confidence that spring will come again
Besides which you see I have confidence in me

Strength doesn't lie in numbers
Strength doesn't lie in wealth
Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumbers
When you wake up -- Wake Up!

It tells me all I trust I lead my heart to
All I trust becomes my own
I have confidence in confidence alone

(Oh help!)

I have confidence in confidence alone
Besides which you see I have confidence in me!

moonbeam, if you have "Rise Up Singing," the lyrics and chords to "The Sound Of Music," "Do Re Mi," and "My Favorite Things" (and maybe "Edelweiss") are there. I have chords and lyrics to those four songs, and if no one posts a link to a "Sound Of Music" website soon, I'll post them or email them to you. You can reach me at geniesings@yahoo.com.

Genie

PS, did you try the "Filter" box (using key words from the songs or song titles) and/or a DT/Forum search?
