Subject: RE: Public Domain - Jimmie Rodgers stuff? From: Richie Date: 10 Jan 03 - 10:01 PM Hey Chance, With regard to old songs that are copyrighted it's best to check and make sure that the song was written solely by the artist (in this case Jimmy Rodgers) Some of Jimmy Rodgers are rewrites and adaptations. In the case of a rewrite, you could not directly copy his arrangement but the song would be OK to use. Many songs are copyrighted that are OK to use but you have to prove prior exsistance. Generally, songs before 1925 (or 1923) are good. -Richie |

Subject: RE: Public Domain - Jimmie Rodgers stuff? From: katlaughing Date: 10 Jan 03 - 06:47 PM Thanks a bunch. I wonder how it is effected if I only do the chorus? It's not going to be for sale or for the radio, as far as I know. The only part I ever learned was the chorus, so that's what they get. My mom and dad used to sing us to sleep with it. Anyway, I'll do some more investigating. I really appreciate your help, Chance. kat |
Subject: RE: Public Domain - Jimmie Rodgers stuff? From: Fortunato Date: 10 Jan 03 - 02:16 PM Sorry about that link. Just do the paste thing, SRs. Kat, the deal is if you look up your song title there and you find only one reference to the song by the original writer then you go through the licensing process. If you do not find the song or you find several listings by various writers, meaning that their 'arrangements' have been copyrighted, then you are free to do your own without licensing. |

Subject: RE: Public Domain - Jimmie Rodgers stuff? From: Fortunato Date: 10 Jan 03 - 02:05 PM kat' paste this in your brower address window. http://www.songfile.com/ then search for song titles. I don't know if it's me or the songfile but the cliky isn't working |
Subject: RE: Public Domain - Jimmie Rodgers stuff? From: Fortunato Date: 10 Jan 03 - 02:01 PM Harry Fox Agency: Here are the copyrights for Prairie Lullaby Looks like you need to license it if you're going to sell the CD or if it will be played on the radio. Link fixed - there was a stray "<br>" in there. --JoeClone |
Subject: Public Domain - Jimmie Rodgers stuff? From: katlaughing Date: 10 Jan 03 - 01:20 PM Thinking ahead here, I want to record Jimmie Rodgers' Prairie Lullaby on a CD for my grandsons, sometime, and am wondering if any of you know what the copyright law might be on it. According to other discussions we've had on the lyrics, it came out in 1932. Is it 75 years? Or was any of his stuff copyrighted? Thanks a bunch. kat |
