Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: GUEST Date: 03 May 03 - 06:28 PM Last Updated on May 4, 2003, 12:31 AM (GMT+02:00) State Department official reports shutdown of three Palestinian terrorist offices in Damascus: Hamas, Jihad Islami and PFLP-General Command. DEBKAfile's Counter-terror sources: Closing down information offices is a technicality. US ultimatum refers to operational commands, bases, training facilities left functioning by Syrian government and surrender of wanted terrorists. DEBKAfile reveals exclusively: Syria organized overland transfer of Iraq's WMD to Lebanese Beqaa Valley for burial in pits 30 meters deep. Saddam paid Assad and family $35m to cover expenses. In attempt to pacify Washington, Syria secretly turned over to US forces on April 28 two heads of Saddam's bio-warfare program Dr Rihab Taha, "Dr. Germ" and anthrax expert Huda Salih Ammash. |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: kendall Date: 05 May 03 - 07:17 AM Doug, where do you get the idea that Fox news is balanced? Do you know the real story behind Fox? Do you know why Rupert Murdock hates Ted Kennedy? Did you notice that ther Globe never misses a chance to smear the Kennedys? That they always referred to Mr. Skakel as "related to the Kennedys" when he is not in any way related? This is balance? The truth is not good enough for Mr. Murdock. Look it up and comment please. |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: TIA Date: 05 May 03 - 01:33 PM I watch enough Fox to know that they present the administrations side. Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: DougR Date: 05 May 03 - 06:21 PM Do any of you EVER listen to Fox News Sunday? Try calling Juan Williams or Mora Liason (sp?) a conservative to their faces. The same liberal representation can be found on Fox News Channel's Special Report with Brit Hume. Kendall: Rupert Murdoch owns the cable network, he doesn't host any show that I know of. CNN, too, never failed to link Skakel to the Kennedys when I was listening to their reports, and I'd venture to say so did all of the networks and other cable news shows. That was what made the trial newsworthy. Are you saying Skakel is NOT related to the Kennedy family, even by marriage? If not, why did Ted Kennedy attend some of the court sessions? Just interested in court trials? He has ample reason, in my opinion, to avoid them like the plague. You don't believe me? Ask Mary Jo Kopekne's parents. DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: Tweed Date: 05 May 03 - 07:53 PM Fox news seems to be on a par with Jerry Springer or Oprah or Jim and Tammy Faye or any other show that thrives on getting the audience pumped up to be very against or for something. There is no room for the audience to think about any facts that are presented there is only reaction and a "quick vote" on the computer. This ain't just Fox News that is doing this, the whole media seems bent on this new format. I think they all do a fairly crappy job but Fox seems the worst in this way. DougR you remember how blind liberals were to many things from 92 to 2000(and we were/are, there's no denying it) but have a look at yourself and make sure you ain't going gahgah over this parade of 'spin the bullshit'. It's just piss poor journalism....well it ain't journalism it's just a load of crap and half truths and breaking news that falls apart from one day to the next. The Clinton BJ news was like that but this situation is a little more important than that. The whole economy seems to be crumbling, public schools are cutting fine arts and sports to stay in the budget, loads of folks are losing their jobs daily and the President keeps ranting about 9-11, WMD, a deck of cards, and blowing smoke up our working class asses about how we should get to keep a hundred bucks a year so we can start a business or some horseshit. Come on Doug, don't tell me you're just as blind as Liberals are you? I ain't being a smartass or flaming you either, but do see anything at all going on with this administration that mebbe ain't kosher? 'spectfully Yerz, Tweed |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: Barry Finn Date: 05 May 03 - 09:16 PM Hi Tweed, & that's only the tip of it. Funding that was helping to curb child abuse has been slashed. The Head Start program's (a Bush favorite) funding has been slashed though they say it's on the same budget as the prior year except all the increases, raises, etc still have to be paid for by contract from the none existing funding. Special ed. is getting pissed on, around here their closing down facilities that house those (adults & kids) that can't survive without proper care & treatment & tossing them out into the street along with (not drunks or druggies) rest of the mentally challenged (again kids & adults). "Leave No Kid Behind", read my lips. It's one failure after another everywhere, SS, meds for the poor & eldery & now the Iraqis are getting the same raw deal that was offered us, a tax break that Bush says will jump start their economy. Damn I hope that they fair better than we are under this new occupation. The world's a stage? Wait till the curtain drops on this fias-show. The only cards in the deck that I see getting played are all coming fom the bottom. I'm just totally disgusted with what's happening to 'OUR' govgernment & how the snakes, who have balls but no backbone, are turning our nation into what our forefathers fought to free themselves from & fought to keep it from what it's becoming. Take Insurance companies, Drug manufactures, Arms manufacturers, Power companies/brokers, stock & money brokers, etc, etc, etc. The list just gets longer & more unbelievable day by day. Who the hell's fighting our war, the war against Aids, drugs, poverty, poor education, child abuse, violence, job loss, infant mortality, civil rights abuses, government corruption, human rights violations, medical non coverage, media coverage control, etc, etc, etc. Who the f$%k do they think we are to swallow such shit, we're in the toilet here & at least some of us know it & I know this, that this ruling dictatorship couldn't give a damn about those that they say they're serving. This country could've been the greatest ever, we could've been the only contender, now it's just a ugly interntional disgrace. When history recordes this dark era, MaCarthy will look like Mother Theresa. God help us all. Barry |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: Peg Date: 05 May 03 - 10:01 PM go Barry! You always tell it just like it is... I for one am sick of being lied to by this government, and not only that but lied to AS IF WE'RE ALL STUPID. We're not. But what can we do? It's so absurd to think that this bozo is going to have to turn his attention to what's wrong on our own soil now, because the only thing he has ever done in his presidency to make anyone sit up and take notice was to declare this illogical and useless and cruel war on Iraq. But I don't think he'll do a damn thing to help our economy or any of the sinking social programs Barry mentioned. He will immediately find another country to invade and bully into submission. Because he is a frat boy and a coward and likes to play "dress up like the Army guys!" The next administration will have one whopping mess to clean up. Assuming China, North Korea or Pakistan haven't bombed us off the map before then. |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: Don Firth Date: 06 May 03 - 02:37 AM The kind of unbiased "news" you get from the likes of Rupert Murdock: Fox News Channel displayed a photograph of the heads of state of France, Germany, and Russia and captioned it "The Axis of Weasel." This sort of thing shows their editorial slant. Pure Bush Administration propaganda, and, of course, it masquerades as a "news channel." How do I know this, Doug? I do watch it. To see what the official line is. I don't like to be told what I'm supposed to believe, so I don't rely on any U. S. news service. Fortunately the internet provides access to news services in other countries, so I get a fairly panoramic view of what's really going on by reading a wide variety of sources. Readily available to anyone who wants to go to the effort, judge the veracity of the sources, and learn to think for themselves. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: DougR Date: 07 May 03 - 01:38 AM Don: you want to rely on news sources from countries other than our own. Good on. Baghdad Bob was a pretty reliable source of information during the recent conflict in Iraq, right? Your propensity for foreign news certainly explains your viewpoint on current events I guess. Peg: Barry's "telling it what it is," would have nothing at all to do with the fact that he tells it as YOU think it is, right? I have an idea! Why don't you lefty folks on the Mudcat get together and start your own network! I'm sure you would have multiple advertisers lining up to sponsor your views, and an instant success for the network would be assured! Most of you are probably too young to remember the Andy Rooney, Judy Garland movies when they would get together, find a barn and do a show! You could do that, and who knows, you might out poll the Rush Lumbaughs in listeners in just a few short days! A caution though: with the unemployment rate at 6% it would not be advisable to quit day jobs. :>) DougR DougR DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: Don Firth Date: 07 May 03 - 03:53 PM Doug, who's Baghdad Bob? I'm quite sure that you think I watch Al Jazeera and believe every word. Not so. Al Jazeera is this-a-way and Fox News Channel is that-a-way. Equally propagandistic. No, I get my news from a wide variety of sources, including American news services. Then I sift and make up my own mind. I've worked in the broadcast media, part of that time as a news reporter and part of that time as a news director, so I'm used to ferreting out what's real, what's unreliable, and what's just plain BS. I'm quite sure you would like to think of me as naïve, but 'taint so. There's nothing quite like having been in the media to know how it operates. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: DougR Date: 07 May 03 - 04:26 PM Don: I was kidding, of course, about Mudcatters starting their own network, but since you were in the media business, I'd be interested in your opinion about why the liberal talk show hosts have not been successful (Mario Cuomo, Donohue, and there may have been others but these are the ones with the highest profile). Thread creep, I know, but I suppose sources of news is too. DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: Don Firth Date: 07 May 03 - 06:39 PM Doug, I'm afraid I couldn't venture an opinion on this particular brand of talk show host. I listened to a few talk shows when they first became popular some years back, but it soon became obvious that they were not a reliable source of news, or even reasonable discussions of the news. The host invariably has a viewpoint that he wants his audiences to buy, and rather than reasoned discussion, he relies heavily on heated confrontation with guests or callers. When someone with an opposing view calls in, instead of being able to participate in a rational discussion, he or she gets thoroughly insulted, abused, and generally trashed. When the host stomps someone into the ground with a load of invective, people who share the host's views get a little thrill of satisfaction, i.e. "Boy! He sure told him!" That's where the entertainment comes in. These shows generate much more heat than light (that's the whole point), often spreading a lot of factual misinformation in the process. They've been around for a long time, but the dean of the right-wing talk show hosts is Rush Limbaugh. As far as Conservatives are concerned, I would rather hear someone like William F. Buckley or the late Barry Goldwater. They have brains, their beliefs are sincere, and much of what they say deserves serious consideration. Limbaugh, on the other hand, is a non-intellectual (who takes pride in the fact) and a blow-hard. His commercial success predictably spawned a whole bunch of clones. I guess it was inevitable that liberals, feeling that those such as Rush Limbaugh seemed to have a monopoly on talk shows, would try to come up with some sort of counterbalance. I've heard Cuomo a couple of times on the evening news, and I'm familiar with Donahue's old television program (which I didn't watch regularly), and, frankly, I tremble for the liberal point of view if it has to rely on this sort of thing. I've heard several liberals who can match wits with Buckley and Goldwater any day, but as far as the usual run of political talk shows are concerned, I have no idea who I'd nominate to host a liberal talk show. Honest political debate should be on a higher level. Which is why I don't think you'll ever find Buckley indulging in this sort of thing. My point is that these programs are primarily intended as entertainment (granted, with a message); they were never intended to be a source of reliable information or rational debate. What I would like to see are a fewliberal politicians who have the guts to stand up for a genuine liberal point of view and offer the American voter a genuine alternative instead of a watered-down version of the current consevative view. Then we'd see where things really stand. I hear faint rumblings in the far distance, but I'm still waiting. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: Barry Finn Date: 07 May 03 - 09:58 PM Sorry about hitting the submit buttom before completing my rave above Hi DougR, I don't want to start a network nor am I looking for multiple advertisers or sponsors nor do I want to do a show. What kind of reply is this, shame. It seems to me, though I'm not sure & hopefully I'm reading you wrong, that you might be telling me because you're in disagreement with my views to go piss up a tree. If so, again not an informative reply. I am old enough to recall Judy & Andy, I'm also old enough to remember protesting the Viet Nam action along with my sister & my father (who earned a purple heart at Guadalcanal) while my brother hunted in Laos & Cambodia & later mined the harbors of Nicaragua. You may be old enough yourself to remember the Dirty Tricks Dept & the plumbers that they hired, all doing pretty well today within government circles. I belive none of what I hear & only half of what I see without going to find more than just 2 sides of the coin. I have no reason to look at the present any differently now. The tanker they claimed today as a WMS manufacturing PLANT? on wheels is the 4th time they've found hard evidence which may or may not pan out. I've spent half a life time living in places most people don't want to hear exists & heard the constant vote mongers commitment to wage war against all & more that of what I've posted above & all have gone the way of Saddam, Osama, Afghanistan & we always move on to the next grand topic & design. We hold teens in Cuba between the ages of 13-16 for a year & a half under the guise on "non combatments" against the Geneva Convention & we are the first to do this. I don't need to rant on, there's so much wrong at this point with our government & evey move now seems so questionably shady (weither or not it actually is?) that nothing short of a complete overhaul will help to pull us out of the tailspin we've created for ourselves. Please don't tell me that there's nothing that you've seen or heard lately that you haven't seriously questioned with good cause & if you have questioned, why & should you need to feel that every move needs inspection before moving on to the next question? Hopefully that should be done as a given not because of suspicion. Good night, Barry |

Subject: RE: BS: The WMD Are Currently Unavailable From: DougR Date: 08 May 03 - 02:29 AM Barry: Nope. You misread my message. I have never questioned the right of anyone to express their opinion of anything. I might not agree with it, but it is their opinion, and is as good as mine. Don: Good post. The reason I posed the question is I had heard that some of the leaders of the Democratic Party were concerned that there was not a liberal counterpoint to Limbaugh, and they hoped to find someone to fill the bill. I haven't heard anything about it recently though. I watched Donohue several times and I think the problem he had was he tried to use the same format with his new show that was so successful back in the 70s. It just didn't work. I would have thought that Cuomo would have been a good possibility but for some reason that just didn't work out. I never heard him when he had his own show, but I think he is an excellent spokesperson for the liberal point of view. I agree that Buckley and Goldwater were good spokespersons for the conservative POV. Goldwater is gone, of course, and I rarely hear anything about Buckley. DougR |
