Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Naemanson Date: 05 May 03 - 09:32 AM Hi, I'm here! I've just been so busy at home and at work I haven't taken the time to cruise the threads or be available for my friends. Sorry about that. I've been trying to figure out how and what I have to do to move to a small island in the South Pacific. It ain't easy! Plus I've been visiting Guam sites to see where I am headed. And talking with my sponsor out there. This weekend I got Fred & Julia's guitar crate. It's large enough to carry four guitars in their cases. That will go with the unaccompanied baggage. I need to find large duffel bags for packing my clothes and linens. Then I have to decide how to pack the 10' spear and horned helmet.... I counted it out this morning. I have 33 days till my last day at work and 37 days till I fly out on my 25 hour flight to Guam. Believe it or not none of the flights go through California or Hawaii. I went to Orbitz.Com to see what a flight to Guam might cost and ran into one of those paradoxes (paradice?) that dominate the airline industry. A one way ticket to Guam is $1,433 and a round trip ticket (for my kids) is $1,438! Brett |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Naemanson Date: 06 May 03 - 09:39 AM I just got my travel orders for Guam! I guess I really am going. I don't know if I should be excited or scared. Consider this passage from an email from my sponsor: "To answer your final question, have to say that our experience has been any location close to the water (eastern or western side) is breezier than it is further inland. Given the humditity, I can't say that there is any part of Guam that is warmer or cooler than any other - one will sweat profusely no matter where you are! The power situation isn't as bad as it used to be - generally, the outages of long duration have been as a result of strong storms. With the typhoons we had last year, it was windy and comfortable a day or two after storm passage since the storm was still in the area - however, as it pulled away from Guam and power had yet to be restored, the next few days seemed to be windless, still days/nights where no breeze was evident anywhere (the kind where you can hear yourself sweat)." |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 May 03 - 01:34 AM You've settled right in to this move emotionally!
Take along a little crank/solar radio and a few of those garden lights that charge all day. You can bring them inside to read by in the evening as you listen to a little music. Better make that a shortwave radio. :) SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: CarolC Date: 07 May 03 - 08:06 AM Hey Brett. I didn't know about this Guam thing. How long will you be there, and will you still be able to visit us here in the Mudcat? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Naemanson Date: 07 May 03 - 08:41 AM Carol - I am moving to Guam for at least the next two years. I leave the second week of June. I expect to be able to visit fellow Mudcats in Australia and New Zealand as well as Hawaii and maybe even California. I will be learning a whole new field of folk music, the indigenous music of the Chamorro on Guam. And I will be introducing folk music to a hitherto barren wasteland of rock and roll and conservatism. Stilly - the majority of my last post was a quote from my sponsor. The "my" wasn't mine but give me time. I do like to settle into an area. Interestingly there are crank up radios available on the island. They are very used to dealing with typhoons. One of the comments I read was that the lease agreement for a rental needs to include typhoon shutters. I hadn't thought of those garden lights. I was figuring on kerosene lanterns. Good thought! Same light, no extra heat. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: CarolC Date: 07 May 03 - 08:48 AM Very cool, Brett (in a hot and humid sort of way). Be safe on your trip out there, and in your island (and small continent) hopping travels. I assume, if you're going to Hawaii, you'll be visiting Mark Cohen. Please pass along one of the hugs I gave you when you were in Shepherdstown to Mark for me, ok? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 May 03 - 09:50 AM Wasn't someone going to send Mark Cohen some Maple syrup, or maple sugar? Now would be a good time to make those arrangments! SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Naemanson Date: 07 May 03 - 01:27 PM Good point, Stilly. Unfortunately I don't have a clue when I'll actually get to see him. Could be months away. None of the flights to Guam go through Hawaii. They all go to Tokyo and than back to Guam. Thanks, Carol, I will be careful. I'm looking forward to getting back into scuba diving. Plus I'm looking forward to living in a place where the sweater and jacket are unknown. Hell, even the long sleeve is a stranger to that place. I just hope I can cope with the heat and humidity. And, just so everyone knows, I will have extra space for visitors. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Jeri Date: 07 May 03 - 07:59 PM Stilly, I traded some maple syrup to Mark for some Kona coffee. I believe he got some more from his Secret Santa. He either has it coming out of his ears by now or he's main-lining the stuff. When a person is assigned to a military base, one gets a 'sponsor'. It's someone who's already there and who you'll probably be working with. It's their job to tell you helpful information about the place and answer questions. They also show you around and help you get settled when you show up. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Naemanson Date: 08 May 03 - 09:28 AM Sponsor - Jeri's right. In my case he has lived there for 8 years and loves it. I asked about folk music and that stumped him. He's been to several exhibits of traditional dance and song and he mentioned they have some traditional music at fiestas so I should get a good exposure to the traditional music of the Chomorro people. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 May 03 - 12:45 PM Well, maybe HE likes maple syrup! Jeri, I have now mopped up the Diet Coke I spit on my keyboard. . . All in all, it sounds like an exciting thing to be doing, moving to a new place like this. Mudcatters will be around (virtually) to chat with and tell snake stories to, and it sounds like the Pacific Ocean is dotted with several of our members. My only advice at this point: pack the sunscreen. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Peter Woodruff Date: 08 May 03 - 08:42 PM I saw him at Walmart. What was I doing at Walmart? Sorry I missed you when you came by last Saturday. Maggie and I had to check out some land here for her sister in Califonia. Peter |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 03 - 09:36 AM Some thoughts on things to take, Naes; just for fun: cheesecloth for covering things, ala mosquitto netting those little pop-up tents to put on picnic tables to keep flies out of your food lots of your own batteries, if they don't put you over your shipping weight limit, as they probably will be very expensive there cotton, cotton, cotton clothing - less irritation from the heat and humidity than synthetics, though you might be able to pick up some awesome island clothing! snake bite kit **BG** corn starch or baby powder for those really sweaty parts :-) hats Rog, who lived in the Philippines says the only thing he'd bring is a swimsuit! umbrella for those non-typhoon days:-) rubber boots for when you are tired of your feet being wet and growing webbing Have fun!! I am excited for you! kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Naemanson Date: 09 May 03 - 10:17 AM Oh! That would be a fun thread. "What should Brett take to Guam?" I ran into some funny regulations for shipping household goods. Of course you cannot ship anything flamable, that's just common sense. But you also cannot ship candles. I am sending a pickup truck to Guam with a hard shell tonneau cover but I cannot put anything in the truck, either in the back or the cab. And for personal transportation I need a passport because my flight will go through Japan however my regular tourist passport is not acceptable. I need an official "no fee" Government passport. And in this day of overwhelming fear and paranoia that would be like carrying a sign saying "I am a representative of the oppressors. Kill me!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 03 - 11:54 AM Holy cow! So whaddaya do? I almost started a thread called that. Shall I? I could jump start it with the above list, eh?**bg** |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 May 03 - 03:05 PM Why not just continue the discussion here? I read the thread because I recognized Brett's name--going in search of another one now seems redundant. I'd make that rechargable batteries and a couple of rechargers. Less weight overall and much more savings. Seeds for planting potted garden stuff from home. You can certainly mail order packets later, but why not tuck in some seeds for lettuce, tomatoes, green onions, and zuchini now? They're light. Or is Guam one of those biosphere reserve places where they're trying to eliminate non-native stuff? My guess is that the U.S. has been entrenched there too long and has polluted the place with bugs, birds, cats, rats, all of that by now. Pack the zinnias and salvia and live dangerously! SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: katlaughing Date: 09 May 03 - 03:25 PM Um, because the title could include his name, again, AND have some fun thrown in. Some may see the title of this one and figure he's already been found, so why bother opening it? Whatever... kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Where's Brett???? From: Naemanson Date: 09 May 03 - 04:23 PM One of the questions I asked my sponsor was about the availability of fruits and vegetables. He says the usual tropical fruits are easily available at roadside stands and in the supermarkets. Standard North American fruits have to be trucked in. I am not much of a gardener, Stilly, so taking seeds along would only be a form of cruelty to the vegetable world. Besides, the whole purpose of this trip is to break out of the old mold and fly free in new air. I hope to have a house with bougainvillia and mangoes growing in the yard. I want to see a carabao wander in to munch on the grass. I want to sit in the morning on a patio and drink my coffee while the fruit bats wing their way home. Re: new thread - I think it might be fun if we think a lot of people would join in. Not many are here on this one. Will one more thread hurt anything? I doubt it. Is it needed? Once again, I doubt it. But it's a fun thought and appreciated, Kat. Thanks. |
