Well, ain't this something. Looks like some one in the White House, very posssibly Carl Rove, leaked the name of a CIA undercover officer becuase the husband of the agent publicly called into question Bush's claims that Saddam was trying to purchase high grade uranium from Africa. Hmmmm? Now, this is a felony, in case anyone wonders about the severity.

Now, on the other side of the street, the Congressional Repubs are linin' up to blame the CIA for giving Bush bad intellegence and that's why Bush took the US into a war without any justification. Ahhh, the entire world was trying to tell Bush to make sure he had his i's dotted and t's crossed and he told the entire world to screw themselves.... Now we're supposed to believe that Junior was misled? Hmmmmm, Part 67,946?

This one is gonna get real intersting, especially since the Bush folks has been caought red handed and even the head of the CIA, George Tenent, has memos that were sent to the White House tellin' them not to play that *16 word card* in the State of the Union address...

Bush's lies are startin' to bite back...

The CIA gave Bush bad intelligence? We would have been inclined to blame his parents or maybe God but we never considered the CIA.

Anyone seen "The talented Mr. Ripley"? Well now... it is a very strange remake of an early sixties french film entitled "Purple Noon". What strikes me most about their differences (I watched them back to back this weekend) is the way they end...

In the talented one, Ripley remains an uncaught psycho threading lies, duplicity, identity theft, and cold hearted murders for his own disgusting needlepoint future... He just keeps getting away with it... Yikes! ...and he's still out there!

In the purple one, He is just on the verge of the 'somebody' he's always wanted to be... Got the girl, the money, the good life... after weaving deception, murder, and identity theft,... he sells the boat for the money... and when it is drydocked for inspection, the girl's late fiance and the 'real' owner, is two weeks dead in the prop...

Not that George is a psycho or anything... but I don't think he saw the purple one...

Don't you bet on it, Ebbie- the moronic voting public still loves him!- long as he keeps thumpin' them towelheads. Remember: close to 70 % of these eejits still think Saddam was responsible for the destruction of the Twin Towers.

I've recently heard a lot of otherwise intelligent folks commenting that even tho it may have been wrong to invade Iraq, now that we're there we've got to "Stay The Course". Jesus wept. Its as if View Nam never happened.

They re-elected that senile cretin Reagan, and he's STILL generally revered......

Then there's the example of the current California Clusterf$$k.

No way is it a foregone conclusion that Idiot Son won't have 'four more years'.

View Nam I'm sure that's a typo - but it's one of those typos that are actually spot on, when referring to the first real TV war. (And in a sense, perhaps the last one where the TV coverage was for real.)

Greg F. is sadly absolutely correct. spent a sunday brunch with people who consider themselves (and are widely considered by others) to be intelligent and well informed (and not the least bit smug or arrogant about it).

They were blissfully unaware of numerous Bush hypocricsies that to those who are tracking it are well known, thoroughly documented, and in several cases ADMITTED (albeit admitted late on Fridays or as a hurricane is bearing down on the capital so that the news is otherwise occupied...damn the Bush spinmeisters are good).

I am amazed almost daily at the level of ignorance and/or gullibility of many Americans.

Oops, gotta run, NASCAR is on.

I should tell you that I belong to another board, which is primarily concerned with US politics. The entire Blair-Campbell-Hoon-Kelly issue has been discussed very intelligently.

The average American, however, doesn't have much of a clue what goes on inside the US, much less outside. They are not to blame -- their school system fails to give them an international perspective, as does their media.

Absolutely correct, pdc. The only real purpose of the media is advertising...and entertainment designed to make you tune in to that advertising. The "news" is part of the entertainment. It is not intended to inform, but merely to distract the public and keep them tuned in to the ads...as well as keep them supporting official policy as dictated from those in power.

This is the direct result of a society that values only the dollar and will pursue any feasible means of persuading its glutted public to spend their dollars on the latest commercial products.

As for school, it is primarily designed to create compliant consumers who will dutifully conform to the established system of buy and sell.

For people to actually become well informed in such a situation demands that they be nonconformists who actually have a burning desire to know the truth and are willing to go to quite a bit of trouble to search it out.

Such people are relatively rare. Most people are just looking to satisfy their immediate needs and appetites.

This doesn't mean that most people are bad or stupid. What it does mean is that the prevailing social system in America, which should provide inspired leadership and encourage its citizens to become imaginative and independent people is in truth failing them miserably and brainwashing them into being stupid as a matter of course.

When the leaders actually want and NEED their public to be ignorant is it any surprise that most of the public ends up that way?

What would happen in a family whose parents wanted their kids to be greedy and ignorant, after all? Such things have probably happened...

No, just lazy, ignorant, and self-absorbed. They need to get off their arses and do something for themselves instead of blaming the schools, the pols, the media, the whatever-you-will & etc., just as long the blame doesn't rest on themselves.

There are certain responsibilities that come with citizenship-
one of which is being informed.

Bush and his cronies have no loyalty to anyone--the CIA is the closest thing to a private army, or palace guard, that the president has, and he's turned on them, with a particularly despicable and traditionally unforgivable act--curious to see how loyal they remain in the future--

consider the old saw .."Power is much too important to be entrusted to those who seek it"

and in these times, the process of seeking power has been refined by media tricks and Gerrymandering etc., fueled by money, and that those with the most nefarious schemes are the hungriest for power to promote them.... therefore power is most often acquired by those who combine the most dangerous combining of cleverness with self interest.

Is there a solution? Not exactly...but most of those reading this live in societies which DO have some system for public participation thru voting. So, like Greg F said right above here..^ "They need to get off their arses and do something for themselves ..."

Karl Rove is not only a scary man, but a brilliant and ruthless one as well. If he has been "caught," which I doubt, it would not change too much -- even if he lost his position and went to prison, I think he would still direct matters from behind the scenes.

"often"? Surely "occasionally" is closer to the truth.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: Bush Declares War on CIA and Vice-versa
From: Wolfgang
Date: 01 Oct 03 - 06:46 AM

Occasionally is closer to the truth than often? You make me smile. How can you know?
(1) What is the truth (in percentages), if 'often' does not fit it?
(2) The mapping of expressions like 'often' 'occasionally' 'sometimes' 'rarely' to percentages is far from interindividually fixed. For some of these expressions the range of individually accepted percentages goes from 5 % to 85 %. Only very few expressions like 'never' 'certain' or 'toss-up' had a narrow range of accepted meanings.

For the same percentage, in surveys, people used vastly different verbal expressions. That even depends on context. 'Often', in the context of accidents means to most people a completely different percentage than 'often' in the context of wins of a football team.

So, the claim that any of these expressions is closer to the truth is rather silly. For Bill, 'often' could mean a higher, lower or even the same percentage as 'occasionally' for you.

Wolfgang

Don't think I'd want to be George Tenent in this tag team.

And, as a sidebar, the White House has allready let it be known that Karl Rove didn't do it so no reason fir Johnny's boys to sniff 'round him. No, sir, he didn't do it. Sniff elsewhere.

Well, Iz sure that very careful consideration is going on within the White House as to who can easily be sacrificed so this thing doesn't drag on. Oh, sure, it will take a few days of PR folks workin' 'round the clock (on our tax bucks, incidently) to come up with a good story for everyone to tell, but look for a sacrifical lamb to be thrown out of the second floor window at the White House within the next week or two...

Could be either way Wolfgang - maybe the hatchet-men employed by politicians don't overstep the mark very often, and when they do they normally get caught; or perhaps they do it much of the time and get away with it except on rare ocasions.

The second option just seems more likely to me, in the light of how people seem to behave in most settings. I'm not assuming politicians and their agents are worse than the rest of us, just very reluctant to assume they are better.

With Ashcroft doing the investigating, it's a foregone conclusion that Rove won't be nailed. Rove worked on Ashcroft's campaign for governor and senator and when Ashcroft lost (to a dead man, we might add), Rove lobbied hard to make him Attorney General. When W was condidering withdrawing Ashcroft's name after he came under so much criticism in congress, Rove convinced him not to.

So, they'll have to find someone else to hang this on.

Most important to remember that this issue has the appearance of a careless diseregard for national security, for an administration whose credibility hinges on it's ability to defend the national security--It has the potential for taking Bush down, and everyone knows it--

Karl Rove is usually the one who engineers Bush's escape from this sort of thing, and Bob Novack is the cheerleader, and now, they are the problem instead of the solution--

I'll be damned, there may be some cause for hope, as long as the GOP doesn't come up claiming to smell like roses because they dump Bush et alia and run on that in the next election. Look at what conservative Sen. Arlen Specter said:

Asked whether Rove's history as a political advisor to Ashcroft during his gubernatorial and Senate campaigns were grounds for him to step away from the case, Specter said "recusal is something Ashcroft ought to consider."

Arlen Specter is a good one to listen to, because he has a lot of clout--However, as a former Philadelphian, let me assure you, Arlen is not a conservative--he is a liberal, at least by the Republican definition--he was also a "go for blood" prosecutor, and, given that he is no friend of either Rove or Ashcroft, would probably like nothing better than to chair a senate investigation himself--

Second that opinion about Spector. He is not a conservative by any definition I have ever seen. Remember Ira Einhorn? Check your history. Spector was Einhorn's attorney and used inside connections to get bail for an obvious murderer. My have helped him skip to Europe and join the Leftist underground. The first thread of many, started when the shrub first came to office was entitled, "Bushwhacked." Seems to me something along those lines might be appropriate, i.e. Bushwhackedonassonwayout!

M.Ted, thanks for your take on Specter.

I'm also fed up with the "gate" thing, but if that's what the news hounds need to get them motivated, I'll sigh deeply and accept it.

How about "Give'em-the-Gate?"

The Tower of London has a real water gate, opens on to the Thames for boats - and it's called "Traitor's Gate". That might do.

The Ira Einhorn business is food for thought for those who are trying to make sense out of the whole Ira Einhorn, because it reflected the kind of connections that Einhorn really had--it is important to remember that had the timing been different, Arlen would have been the one who prosecuted Ira--This is a whole other discussion, though--

Thanks, M.Ted. I was just trying to put some "teeth" in the statement that Spector is no conservative.

It seems he may have grown less moderate than he used to be. I am not that well-versed on what you have both referred to, but the following sure makes him a conservative in my view.(Please note, I am NOT responding as a means to incite a debate about Specter; only defending my use of "conservative.")

Specter: March 18, 2003, sided with the Republican wing of his party and voted against the "Patriotic Pause" amendment which would have delayed tax cuts in favor debt reduction protecting Social Security and spending on the war, homeland security and economic stimulus [Vote 57, March 18, 2003].

Specter: March 18, 2003 sided with the conservative wing of his party and voted against an amendment that would have eliminated most of the tax cuts in favor of shoring up the Social Security Trust Fund [Vote 58, March 18, 2003].

Specter: March 25, 2003 Specter sided with the conservative wing of his party and voted - against his moderate leanings - to support Bush's irresponsible tax plan. Specter voted against an amendment to reduce the Bush tax cut to $350 billion and dedicate the difference to a reserve fund to strengthen Social Security. [Vote 93, March 25, 2003]

Arlen has generally tended to support progressive social legislation, and, with the notable exception of his prosecutorial questioning of Anita Hill, has tended to be a big supporter of equal and human rights --As with all politicians, he is expedient rather than ethically or morally consistant when supporting things--

When you review his career, you will find that he cemented himself to the fast track to political power when he was a young lawyer involved in the official investigation of a rather famous crime by devising something called the "Single Bullet Theory"--

Please keep in mind that I never said whether I liked him, or even voted for him--his son is one of my attorneys, though, and about as sharp as you can find--

If they have declared war on each other, I'll back Bush. He might be dumb, but he should be smarter than the CIA.

Then again, wet cement is smarter than both of them, so it's not much of a contest.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted a link to a 9/29/03 The Nation article entitled "CIA Leak Is Big Trouble For Bush" by David Corn on this topic:Corn Article

I found it particularly informative and gratifying.

M.Ted, it's certainly true that Specter was a liberal in his younger days. (My first girlfriend's mother was active in his campaign in the late 60s, and she was a local Philadelphia politico and a card-carrying liberal.) But don't forget, so was Ronald Reagan!

I'm not all that sure that this episode, as heinous as it is, will "bring Bush down." After all, don't something like 70% of the American people still believe that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11? And that's even after Bush and Rumsfeld said, "Oh, no, we never said that."

Aloha,
Mark

Of course some of them might be thinking "If Bush says it isnt so, then it probably is so..."
