Okay, I probably oughtta just take the P-Vine to Dr. Phil fir fixin'and I might have to do it yet but.....

.... the danged ol' gal had gotten to repeating herself. No, not like tellin' the same story that she told me a couple years back. A couple years back. But like, after most sentences she will repeat either the entire sentence 'er part of it... yeah, she'll repeat the entire sentence 'er part of it. It's startin' to drive me crazy. Drive me crazy...

I've brought it to her attention and she blames me fir startin' it, which maybe I do now and then. Now and then... But she's got it bad. I mean, the girl has got it bad...

Anyone out there had, or been married to folks who had, repeatitis and what di ya' do the break it? What did ya' do to break it?

she's been listen to Jay Leno jokes too much? He's the worst offender I know.

well, anyway..it could be a simple habit like "ya know whad I mean?", or it could be stress coming out in funny ways...Not an easy thing to diagnose.

Bobert, about the time my daughter started puberty it seemed like she suddenly lost the ability to focus on anything that didn't particularly interest her. I had to repeat and repeat whatever I was saying. It got to the point I would say, OK! I'm going to talk now! Otherwise I would go through some longwinded spiel ending with a question- and she'd say, Huh? Warning her I was going to talk made her cue in.

Not to imply that you have selective hearing, but - do you?

Nah, the P-Vine sometimes things I'm not hearin' everything so she quizes me an' I'z always right there, like a tape recorder, recitin' word fir word what she said.... It ain't about me... Okay, I might have had something to do with it since I am a bluesman and tend to repeat the 1st verses twice but I don't think it ever seriously entered into my speech patterns but...

...sure got a hold of the P-Vine, sure did.... See, that's exactly what she does....exactly....

Sounds to me like she's engrossed in what she's saying, and is running the thought over again in her own head and verbalizing it while so doing.

What can you do about it? Danged if I know.

Anyone I've ever lived with had numerous little habits that started to drive me nuts after a while. My solution has been to live alone, but that's not most people's chosen solution.

I guess acceptance of people's oddities is a big part of learning humility and compassion...

Then again, you could fight back by repeating everything yourself...by repeating everything yourself. Maybe she'd notice, maybe she wouldn't. Maybe she'd notice, maybe she wouldn't. Maybe she wouldn't. If it started to bug her as much as it bugs you, if it started to bug her as much as it bugs you, then maybe she'd become more aware of the habit. Maybe she'd become more aware of the habit.

Or maybe she'd go for you with the frying pan. :-)

We just hope that when one of us gets to the stage of repeating things the other will have forgotten the first time round and we'll just happily go round and round together. No help though! Your problem sounds more like she's doing blues lines, Bobert, could you perhaps rhyme the third time around and turn the whole thing into a song routine. Or! I've just thought of a way out! Passionate kisses! Passionate kisses! Passionate kisses! Hard to talk if you're being smothered with kisses.

It's called hyperbole backlash.

It seems to me that we currently suffer from a lack of simple declarative sentences. They are just no longer enough. It seems that everything has to match the hyper culture through which we are spinning.

We are either...

1. Shouting to be heard
2. Acting out to be heard
3. Acquiring, alright, extra, alright, words, ok, to, ok, put, like, undo, allright, EMPHASIS on even the smallest, most trivial point we are trying to make...know-what-I-mean?.
4. Repeating what we think are our best lines....and any other line we think needs to be heard (and we're certain they all need to be heard........because opinion is king).

...or maybe you're just not listening.

Hm. My girl does the opposite. She never says things the first time. For awhile she used to have an odd habit of telling me things, but without most of the nouns and verbs I needed in order to know what she's talking about. I had to pry for them. It just went away. It was odd and frustrating, but then it was gone.

My wife told me about an interesting article she read in the paper. Seems that typical men use about 15000 words per day, while typical women use about 30000 words per day. According to my wife, that is because women need to say everything twice.
When she first told me this, I looked up and said "Huh?"

Bobert, if you don't talk much, she may be filling space. It may be a sort of invitation to a chorus. It would be polite to repeat it WITH her. Maybe, in a more bluesy tradition, you could interject comments in between the first time and the repeats.

Sort of like:
P-Vine: "I talked to Marge on the phone today, and she sounded pretty good. Yep..."
You: "TELL me how she sounded!"
P-Vine "She sounded pretty good. She said her cousin's boss got a milkshake from McD's. Yep, he..."
You: "SHAKE it, mama!"
P-Vine: "...got a milkshake from McD's and wouldn't you know, there was a big ol' dead fly in it. Can you believe it, there was..."
You: "TESTIFY, baby!"
P-Vine: "...a fly in it."

You get the picture.

I'm gonna try this fir a few days and see if it has any impact. I'll tell ya' one thing, pointin' out that she just did it again ain't worked...

And, I'z been accusercated of interruptin' her in the past so I don't dare interject a blues line in the middle of one of her monolouges.... But I'll keep an open mind on this idea if my latest cure from the "Acme Cure Co." fails....
