Subject: BS: NEED HELP--Vote for Millard Filmore
From: catspaw49
Date: 04 May 04 - 04:00 PM

Awright Gang, let's have some fun! At another site I visit, the SPEED Boards, there are some fun folks around too. A couple of them are true Mudcat material if they just had any minor interest in folk or blues....not that it matters much around here anymore(:<))

My friend Scutwerker (gotta' love the handle huh?) likes Cletus and Paw and has a typically warped sense of humor. He has a few running gags over there that are funnier than hell. Bobertz, if you're reading this, you need to visit "Satan's Used Car Lot"....you and Scut would get along great! Anyway.........

That site allows you a "Signature" at the bottom where you can put sayings, pics, quotes, whatever. Scut has a picture of ol' Millard Filmore and daily he changes the captions which are generally something like, "If Millard Filmore, our 13th President, were alive today, he'd use the 50 cent coupons for Bush's Baked Beans."....or something equally stupid.

A toy company that makes presidential figurine things is taking a poll on what others to do so let's all help Scut get Millard immortalized. We haven't done anything this fuckin' stupid in a coon's age. Remember wwen we sent all those postcards for El Swanno? THIS is that dumb!! So go to THIS SITE and vote for Millard. You can actually cast three votes if you vote him once for first, once for second, and once for third. The other choices are up to you.

And here's Scut's thread at the SPEED boards... Dumbshit....Let's get on this and make Millard our man!!!

Millard Filmore was a native of Buffalo. His home in East Aurora is a stone's throw from my brother's home and a mandatory class trip for every true blue Buffalonian grade school student. I will see if I can recruit some more votes.
SINS

Millard! Millard! He's my man.
If he can't do it, he can't.

Why is Martin Van Buren beating out millard fillmore? And was Pierce really president? I missed that.

GB Jr. comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Bet it's forged.

I have fulfilled my civic duty. I am so proud I think I'll be shittin' red, white & blue fer a week.

BTW, don't fergit to cast yer vote fer First Lady as well. I almost voted a split ticket and went fer Barbara Bush 'cause she looks so much like th' Quaker Oats guy an' my wife Susan really likes oatmeal, but then I remembered that she gave birth t' Dubya an' voted fer Mrs. Filmore instead.

Have PM'd the Buffalo and East Aurora Chambers of Commerce as well as the EA JAycees. My nephew has been recruited to get his cronies from Johns Hopkins in the vote. Millard may win after all.

Sadly Fillmore only has 99 votes. We catters are going to have to do a little more. I voted for Warren G. Harding too, because great grandfather won a dollar from him playin poker. I voted for Rachel Jackson. Her husband was the kind of man who gives rat bastards a bad name, but I've always been fond of her.
For some reason Mrs. Martin Van Buren is high on the list of first ladies. I wonder if they shouldn't have Rose Greenhow. She was James Buchanan's unofficial first lady. (Buchanan wasn't married. Mrs. Greenhow hosted parties at the White House. She was a Confederate spy. So it was very convenient.)

Mallard Fillmore is the only thing on my local editorials page that makes sense much anymore. (Of course, they do publish quite a lot of quotes from "local intellectuals.")

Tough competition for Bush as it is though. Of course, most who vote won't actually look at the candidates' records.

LadyJean,

Buchanan's official first lady was his niece, Harriet Lane. When Buchanan was young, he was engaged to a woman named Anne Coleman--they had a quarrel of some sort, and broke up, and she went home to the folks, where she immediately died(it is generally believed that she committed suicide). Buchanan never got over it, and never married(though he dated a lot).

I like Buchanan, partly because he was from Pennsylvania, and partly because he is regarded as the one of worst presidents we ever had (right along with his predecessor, Franklin Pierce). When Lincoln was inaugurated, he is supposed to have told him, "If you are as happy about coming into this office as I am about leaving it, you area a happy man indeed."

Even still, as a favor to Pat, I voted for Fillmore. He was the only President ever who actually admitted to being a "Know-Nothing"--

OK, I voted for Millard, followed by Rutherford B. Hayes, who along with F. Pierce is the other president no one remembers and also has the distinction of having the only first name that will never be shared by another president. You may ask "what about Grover Cleveland?", well, his full name was Stephen Grover Cleveland, and being both a Steve and from New Jersey, he got my third vote. Mrs. Van Buren gets my vote as first lady, since she got a raw deal - Martin, in his autobiography, never refers to her once. He claimed it was not something a gentleman does.

Hey Steve - I'd say it's unlikely that another president is going to have the name Rutherford, but you never to. Plus, theres a few other as well - I doubt that Abraham has much of a chance. And who would have thought that we have had 2 1/2 Georges? George isn't exactly the most common of names. Ronald, Gerald, Dwight and Franklin may come back as popular baby names some day, but how many boys get those names today? And those were presidents within the last 60 years.

Happen to be reading (because I like history) a 1200-page tome called The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party. Fillmore, against all expectations, turns out to be not another cipher like some other 19th century (and 20th?)--perhaps somebody even closer? US presidents, but actually an interesting guy. (I suspect the others may be also if you find enough info on them)

As you know, he took over from Zachary Taylor when Taylor died in 1850. In fact he took over at a particularly tense time in US history. There was a border dispute between Texas and New Mexico which had heated up so much it could easily have started the Civil War in 1850, especially since slavery was an issue between the 2. New Mexico was not yet a state, but had declared its intention to come into the Union as a free state; Texas of course was a slave state. Texas had sent troops to the Santa Fe area to claim all the territory up to Santa Fe. Taylor, despite being a slaveholder himself, had sent US Army troops to the area (just before his death, as it turned out) to prevent the land grab by Texas.

Fillmore followed in Taylor's path by telling the Texans that if they invaded US territory by marching on Santa Fe, he would have no choice but to call out the militia and the regular army. The border question was settled as part of the Compromise of 1850. Each side thought it had been cheated (what's new?) but, as Fillmore pointed out, Congress and no other body had the power to determine the border between Texas and the terrritory of New Mexico (and to do it fast enough--neither a boundary commission nor the Supreme Court could be quick enough.) Texas thought it should have all of New Mexico east of of the Rio Grande; New Mexico and many northerners thought 1/3 of New Mexico had been surrendered (to get the present day border).

Fillmore pushed for passage of the entire package of the Compromise (including the Fugitive Slave Act). You could make the case that the Compromise was in fact necessary, since it prevented the clash of Texan and US arms (and southern states had promised to back Texas-Southerners were ready to fight. In the decade of the 1850's the North expanded considerably both in industrial power and population. As it was, the Civil War was a near thing-- a la Vietnam and the American Revolution, all the South had to do was persuade enough Northerners that it was not   worth the blood and treasure to keep prosecuting the war. In 1850, the South might well have won (if generalship had been similar to what it was 11 years later)---- (I know, pure speculation, but intriguing, at least I think so.)

Anyway, by 1855 it was obvious to Fillmore, who was a Whig, that the Know-Nothings were making big inroads into the Whigs--by saying what Whig leaders didn't, but quite a few rank-and-file believed--the Irish were undercutting wage scales, Catholics were a danger to the Protestant republic, and the Irish and Germans together were bringing down the morals of "good Americans" by drinking and running taverns. It was a delicate situation for Fillmore, who knew that lots of Whigs reviled nativism (and the secrecy of the Know-Nothings), but Fillmore wanted election in 1856.

In 1852, the Whigs ran Winfield Scott ("Old Fuss and Feathers") (a far cry from "Old Rough and Ready" (Taylor), though both had been prominent in the Mexican War, which the Whigs opposed. The Whigs lost in 1852, against a political pigmy, Franklin Pierce, "the hero of many a well-fought bottle". ---(who else could this describe?) This author seems to believe the Whigs lost, ironically, because of their extremely clumsy attempt to win the immigrant vote. Scott, in a speech in Cleveland in the rain to a shouted response from the crowd: "I love to hear the Irish brogue, I have heard it before on many battlefields and I wish to hear it many times more" But the Irish and German Catholics knew there were lots of bigots in the Whig party, and so Scott did not get their vote and lost the bigot vote also (turnout was also way down).

Sorry to ramble--I just thought it's an interesting story---OK--by 1855 Fillmore was trying to co-opt the Know-Nothings into the Whig party. He sent out feelers to them. He hoped he would not have to lower himself by actually joining the Know-Nothings, but eventually it became obvious he would have to, and he did. This book says he did it because of genuine concern that the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the agitation caused by it was endangering the Union, and he was the best hope for a nationwide Union party. (No ambition on his part--well--OK-- if you say so) In the end Fillmore was never elected President.

Re: Fillmore as a Unitarian--not sure --have no info on this. But, if I were Unitarian, I wouldn't necessarily be so enthusiastic to claim Unitarian forbears. Unitarians didn't always wear white hats. (Fillmore--Fugitive Slave Act). Also, another book I'm reading, The Age of Jackson--Arthur Schlesinger Jr. ( won the Pulitzer for this one) quotes an extremely prominent Unitarian preacher, William Ellery Channing, as claiming that the rich had worse problems than the poor: The poor may be sometimes be overworked but "how many of our daughters are victims of ennui, a misery unknown to the poor and more intolerable than the weariness of excessive toil!"

Say Ron, I believe for Millard Fillimore and Grover Cleveland were back-to-back peresidents, both former sheriffs of Erie County. From what you wrote, Cleveland must have followed Fillmore. Do you know how Buffalo was able to send two boys in a row to the Whitehouse? Or am I wrong on the back-to-back?

Thanks for your interest, Jim. I have to say I'm not even tempted to read fiction---history is just too fascinating

Flattop--Buchanan (said by some, including a Smithsonian article I read, to a be a strong candidate for the all-time worst US president), followed Pierce, who was the political pygmy elected in 1852. So it was Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan. (I don't know why I put that in--just wanted to mention Buchanan, I suppose.)

Cleveland was elected in 1884--- "Ma, Ma, Where's my pa? Gone to the White House, Ha Ha Ha.". Cleveland also has the distinction of being the only president to ever have been elected to two terms separated by somebody else's presidency; in this case Benjamin Harrison. This is all asssuming my memory is accurate.

You know, looking at the list, me thinks we should try to get Reagan knocked off the top of the list. He was such a scary piece of crap, and any "reward" he gets is so competely undeserved.

Maybe we need to take this to next level - tell your friends (if you have them) outside the Mudcat. I'll send the link to my Unitarian Universalist friends and ask them to vote for Filmore the Unitarian.

I'm not encouraging you to vote for Clinton as well as Filmore (to knock Reagan of the top) but something must be done.

Ok, I finally read this posting just to see what the heck it was about, and consequently went to the website and indeed voted for Fillmore (I had a very bad feeling that if I didn't, the ghost of Fillmore in the guise of blackcatter would come to haunt me.)

Now, if it's alright with everybody, what I'm going to do at this point is vote for all the names of Presidents I really know nothing about...not even what they looked like. I figure this is as good a reason as any to want to see a doll of them made.

But I PROMISE...first choice will always go to Millard..xx..e

FROM: http://nene.essortment.com/millarfillmore_ppq.htm

President Zachary Taylor had opposed the Compromise of 1850, which would allow the spread of Slavery to the new states. Now, President Fillmore supported the Compromise because he felt it was the only way to prevent a Civil War. When Fillmore became President that was his main agenda, to sign the five documents that made up the Compromise of 1850. The compromise would allow the spread of slavery into the free states and also what is known as the Fugitive Slave Act. This Act allowed slave owners to go north and recapture blacks that were thought to be runaways back to the south without a trial. The northern states hated that law. They would try to protect the blacks by offering free legal advice and also posted warnings of known slave hunters in the area. The slave hunters would not only kidnap the runaway slaves but would sometimes kidnap blacks that were free and bring them to the south and make them slaves. This cost Millard Fillmore any political future.

By signing the Compromise of 1850, Fillmore lost any future nominations from the Whig party they did not want anything to do with him. At this point they despised him. During the Campaign of 1852, the Whigs would not support him, so Millard Fillmore chose to retire.

----

So no campaign songs. He never ran for the Presidency. Any Zachary Taylor/Millard Fillmore campaign songs?

For Fillmore (no lyrics):

1        Fillmore schottisch, op. 28 /
2        American quadrille /
3        Fillmore grand waltz, op. 253 /

For Taylor:

Hurrah for Rough and Ready
(sung to the tune of Old Dan Tucker)

When Washington and Jackson fled,
Folks thought our race of heroes dead,
But Freedom to her soil still steady,
Sent gallant Taylor, "the Rough and Ready."

Hurrah, hurrah,
Hurrah, hurrah,
Both night and day with voices steady,
Shout for our gallant "Rough and Ready."

A noble son of old Kentuck,
With a heart like a lion, an eye like a buck,
A head as clear as her skies so free,
And frame as tough as her hickory tree.

Hurrah, hurrah, &c.

In eighteen "12" 'gainst twelve to one,
He bravely saved Fort Harrison,
And made Miami's red skins fly,
From the lead of his guns, and the fire of his eye.

Hurrah, hurrah, &c.

At Florida in '37,
With five hundred men --- the foe eleven,
He burnt "red alligators" Toby,
And conquered at Lake Okeechobee.

Hurrah, hurrah, &c.

There Thompson, Brooke, and a hundred fell,
'Mid the roar of the storm and the Indian yell,
But Taylor gave the cats such cracks,
That they flew from the field like the fur from their backs.

Hurrah, hurrah, &c.
At last against the lurking foe,
The pride of Bandit, Mexico,
He met them five to one quite handy,
And gave them Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Hurrah, hurrah, &c.

He covered Palo Alto's grass,
And Resaca de la Palma's Pass,
With heads and limbs and being winner,
He fed his troops on Arista's dinner.

Hurrah, hurrah, &c.

Then hail to Zach., the first of men,
With sword or word, or with the pen,
To the people ever true and steady,
We'll find him still "Old Rough and Ready."

Hurrah, hurrah,
Hurrah, hurrah,
Both night and day with voices steady,
Shout for the gallant "Rough and Ready."

Come fall in boys, eyes right and steady.
And raise the shout for Rough and Ready,
He licked Old Peg Leg with his Pass
And now he'll use up Lewis Cass.*

All of the preceding verses are from the Rough and Ready Songster except for this one.
This verse was found in an article in Fort Scott's files.

Millard Fillmore "chose to retire". Not exactly. He ran again in 1856. By 1855 he was trying to inveigle Know-Nothings into the Whig party, since he realized they were in fact the only booming party at the time, and signing up many former Whigs. After trying to get Know-Nothing support without actually joining them, he realized it wouldn't work and did join them. Still didn't work for him--he was never elected president.

There's a lot more to the story--regarding the Fugitive Slave Act, election of 1852 (Whigs decided to run Winfield Scott, since they had won with William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor--in fact they only won with generals--- and the third time was not lucky)--- and other topics. I have more of the story in my post of 8 May 2004 10:36 PM, but there's yet more.

Ronald Reagan                2637         1215         697         4549
William J. Clinton         3393         491         636         4520

Harry Truman                161        269        320        750
Martin Van Buren        464         147         129         740
John Adams                214         218         205         637
Millard Fillmore        370         116         117         603

It'd be great if we could get him up past Truman - that would definately put him in the same group with some of the best and most popular (which can be mutually exclusive).

Millard Fillmore

Religious Affiliation: Unitarian

(From: http://user.ksni.net/~uuquincy/projects/stamps/6millardfillmore.htm) We know nothing of Millard Fillmore's religious life as a child. He and Abigail Powers were married by the Reverend H. H. Smith in Moravia, New York. They lived in East Aurora, New York where Millard practiced law.

Sometime after they moved to Buffalo, they joined the First Unitarian Society (they were actually charter members). The pew rental assignment from the original church shows the pew which belonged to the Fillmore family. The church building, where they worshipped was burned around the year 1870, and most of the church records were burned too.

While Mr. Fillmore was in Washington, D. C. he attended the Unitarian Church. One minister, the Rev. Joseph Henry Allen, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, was minister here from 1847-1850. Allen's sermons dealt with many of the perplexing problems of the time. Foremost among them was, of course, slavery. Though many preachers were avoiding discussion of this matter, he, like Longfellow and Channing, never hesitated to express himself on the side of freedom. However, his ministry lasted only three years.

It has been written, that the years between 1827-1854 were "Years of Struggle" for the Unitarian Society in Washington, D.C. "It was misunderstood and misrepresented in the community and at times political dissensions threatened its existence. But the families of .... John Adams .... John Quincy Adams....and Millard Fillmore during his presidency stood together in the old church edifice as in a strong fortress. It was important to them and to those who were to come after that a Unitarian Church in the capital of the nation be maintained. And thanks to them, it was."

Abraham Lincoln attended the Unitarian Church in Buffalo with Millard Fillmore on Lincoln's way to the inauguration. Lincoln was Fillmore's overnight guest. Former president (and fellow Unitarian) John Quincy Adams attended the Buffalo church with Fillmore in 1843)

Fillmore showed his interest in education by helping to found the University of Buffalo, now the State University of New York.

Summary of Religious Views:

Fillmore had no formal religious ties, and indeed had shown relatively little interest in religion, until he joined the Unitarian church in about 1831.

Views on Religion & Politics:

Fillmore strongly supported the separation of church and state. In the early 1830s, he labored to overturn the New York test law that required all witnesses in New York courts to swear an oath affirming their belief in God and the hereafter. Among other actions, Fillmore wrote a series of public letters opposing the the test law.

Quotations:

"In my opinion, Church and State should be separate, not only in form, but fact -- religion and politics should not be mingled." -- from a series of campaign speeches, Summer of 1856

I had not the advantage of a classical education and no man should, in my judgement, accept a degree he cannot read. (on why Fillmore declined an honorary degree from Oxford University)

Well with the number of fairly liberal religious people around here, I figured it be nice to see that Fillmore was a "stand up" kind of guy. Nice to see that he was serious about his faith too - so many of our recent presidents have been religious just because the were supposed to.

Jaysus, Spaw! I Knew I shoulda opened this thread a long time ago. Spent the better part of last night reading it and your gol-danged links..now I am so sleepy I can hardly type!

I did my part...I voted for him for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and I nicely paired him up with his wife. He does sound as though he was a decent fellow. *Warning: shameless plug* If I'd gotten a sixth of the hits he's had, well...paid hits, that is, my book would be going to the printer's today!

Glad to do my part For Fillmore!

Hmmmm, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore founded another very liberal religious society: Unity School of Christianity/Unity Church. I wonder if they were related descendants?

Fillmore is an interesting guy but no role model. He pushed the entire Compromise of 1850 including the Fugitive Slave Law. (It is of course possible that had not the entire Compromise package been passed, the Civil War would have started 11 years earlier, but we'll never know). As president he strongly enforced the Fugitive Slave Law, with its retroactive provisions which threatened blacks long resident in the North, and with its lack of jury trials. By the end of 1851, alleged runaways had been captured in New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana,, Illinois and Massachusetts and returned to the South. If he had heard abolitionist sermons in his church in the 1830's and 1840's, as president he did not let that influence him. His friend John Quincy Adams would have been very disappointed if he had lived to see Fillmore president.

In 1856 he was the candidate of the Know-Nothing party, basically a fraternal order against Catholics (papal plot to topple the Protestant state), particularly against Irish (threatened to bring wage scales down for everybody since they'd take jobs at virtually any pay) and/or against immigrants in general, depending on what would play in a given area. Whether or not he believed all this, in 1856 he was their standard-bearer. There is also evidence that he ascribed an early loss in his career to abolitionists and immigrants.

Millard Fillmore         446         129         118         693

Ron - certainly he wasn't the perfect person. One thing is that the Unitarians who were abolitionists at that time were mainly in New England and not in the other parts of the country. Buffalo in the 1830s was not a place to be an abolitionist and a successful politician.

don't that the fugitive slave act was part of a parcel that also included banning slavery in the district of columbia - admitting a state as a "free" state - establishing various territories as "free" territories and several other abolitionist measures.

Fillmore enforced the Fugitive slave law because it was the law of the land, and a result of the Dred Scott decision, which in some ways blurred the distinction between slave and free states.

If anything, the enforcement of the fugitive slave act actually advanced the abolitionist cause. It forced the so-called free states to face the fact that this country's laws allowed slavery to exist. Citizens in free states could no longer take comfort in thinking that slavery was a regional issue. A slave in America was a slave anywhere they went. If slavey was to be abolished, it would have to be on a national scale.

Whether as Whig or a Know Nothing, I would just like to see a president recognized, that neither of our current ruling duopoly of politcal parties can claim as their own.

I don't think Jefferson or Jackson would fall in line with today's Democrats, not do I think that Lincoln would identify with the current Republican Party.

Our exhalted icons are every bit as flawed as those left in obscurity.

A vote for Fillmore is the act of an iconoclast. Go ahead, smash those idols!

OK, here we go:

Revolutionary War:
Washington: General & Commander of the Continental Army
Monroe: Continental Army lieutenant colonel

Indian Wars:
Wm. Harrison: ensign in the First Infantry of the Regular Army, rose to vice captaincy
Jackson: General in Creek and Seminole Indian Wars as well as War of 1812
Lincoln: captain in the Black Hawk War

Mexican War:
Taylor: General
Pierce: brigadier general

Civil War:
Grant: General-in-Chief of the Union Forces
Garfield: major general of volunteers.
Hayes: brevet major general
McKinley: Enlisted as a private in the Union Army, mustered out at the end of the war as a brevet major
B. Harrison: Colonel of the 70th Volunteer Infantry
Arthur: Quartermaster General of the State of New York

Spanish-American War:
T. Roosevelt: lieutenant colonel of the Rough Rider Regiment

World War I
Truman: captain in the Field Artillery

World War II
Eisenhower: General, Commander of the Allied Forces
Kennedy: Navy lieutenant & commander of a PT boat
L. Johnson: Navy lieutenant commander
Nixon: Navy lieutenant commander
Ford: Navy lieutenant commander
G.H.W. Bush: Navy lieutenant pilot

Carter: Navy lieutenant & senior officer on one of the first nuclear submarines (1946-1953) Carter is the only president to serve in the military without being involved in combat situations, though he attended the Naval Academy during WWII.

So, 8 president were generals. Interestingly, all recent presidents which served, did so in the Navy (Eisenhower being the last Army man). Of course, our current pretender was in the Air National Guard.

Fugitive Slave Law was law in large part because Fillmore pushed hard for it himself, in order to try to satisfy the South. Obviously it's a matter of perspective--as a black, how would you have felt about it?   Also, Dred Scott decision was not under Fillmore.

At his time in history, being anti-slavery was not very common in the U.S. As I stated before, even though many Unitarians were abolitionists (such as Robert Shaws family - the Broderick charachter in Glory) the majority of them wer in New England, not our on the "frontier" in Buffalo.

Most people didn't bother to think to much about the issue until the war pushed it down their throats unless they were in one of the border states.

The way I look at it is this - ifrst of all who cares (though them coming out with a Fillmore doll would be really funny. I'd probably buy one just to remember this whole thing). And on top of that there are some really bad presidents who deserve to be at the bottom of the list. Our current pretender is fairly low on the list, but I'd like to see him on the bottom, so I'm voting for J. Q. Addams to pass him. And frankly, it's sad that Reagan is #2 (but thanks to some of us he's not #1 any more). And I'm voting for Washingtom to pass him.

Once both those things happen I'll start voting for others, too.

I'm pretty laid back about this, but I'm slowly trying to reorder the list to the way I think it should be.

Now go out and vote damn you!

A few vote counts - since thins is an election year we might as well get used to hearing them repeatedly...

George Washington needs 106 votes to pass Reagan and clinch the number two spot.

Fillmore is 369 voites out of the number 11 spot - which would bump George H. Bush to 12th.

Dubya is currenlty only 9 votes ahead of John Quincy Adams - and Andrew Johnson is only another 21 behind Adams

Polk, Wilson and Hoover are all within shouting distance of Gerald Ford.

James Buchanan is dead last.

In the First Lady popularity constest Frances Cleveland has moved up several spots recently though still 2137 votes out of first place and 1038 out of placing in the top five.

No results yet posted in the First Pet catagory - though it is rumoured 'socks' is winning by a landslide.

Gotta vote for cats around here.

Here's some of the standing for those of you are more visually inclined.

William J. Clinton         3394         508         660         4562
Ronald Reagan                2637         1215         698         4550
George Washington         1496         1549         1413         4458

George H.W. Bush         312         528         441         1281
Millard Fillmore         617         182         130         929

George W. Bush         187         90         67         344
John Quincy Adams         53         128         156         337
Andrew Johnson                50         207         65         322
James Madison                34         95         145         274

Gerald Ford         34         80         127         241
James Polk         63         83         87         233

For those of you curious about Polk:

James K. Polk

Often referred to as the first "dark horse" President, James K. Polk was the last of the Jacksonians to sit in the White House, and the last strong President until the Civil War.

He was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1795. Studious and industrious, Polk was graduated with honors in 1818 from the University of North Carolina. As a young lawyer he entered politics, served in the Tennessee legislature, and became a friend of Andrew Jackson.

In the House of Representatives, Polk was a chief lieutenant of Jackson in his Bank war. He served as Speaker between 1835 and 1839, leaving to become Governor of Tennessee.

Until circumstances raised Polk's ambitions, he was a leading contender for the Democratic nomination for Vice President in 1844. Both Martin Van Buren, who had been expected to win the Democratic nomination for President, and Henry Clay, who was to be the Whig nominee, tried to take the expansionist issue out of the campaign by declaring themselves opposed to the annexation of Texas. Polk, however, publicly asserted that Texas should be "re-annexed" and all of Oregon "re-occupied."

The aged Jackson, correctly sensing that the people favored expansion, urged the choice of a candidate committed to the Nation's "Manifest Destiny." This view prevailed at the Democratic Convention, where Polk was nominated on the ninth ballot.

"Who is James K. Polk?" Whigs jeered. Democrats replied Polk was the candidate who stood for expansion. He linked the Texas issue, popular in the South, with the Oregon question, attractive to the North. Polk also favored acquiring California.

Even before he could take office, Congress passed a joint resolution offering annexation to Texas. In so doing they bequeathed Polk the possibility of war with Mexico, which soon severed diplomatic relations.

In his stand on Oregon, the President seemed to be risking war with Great Britain also. The 1844 Democratic platform claimed the entire Oregon area, from the California boundary northward to a latitude of 54'40', the southern boundary of Russian Alaska. Extremists proclaimed "Fifty-four forty or fight," but Polk, aware of diplomatic realities, knew that no course short of war was likely to get all of Oregon. Happily, neither he nor the British wanted a war.

He offered to settle by extending the Canadian boundary, along the 49th parallel, from the Rockies to the Pacific. When the British minister declined, Polk reasserted the American claim to the entire area. Finally, the British settled for the 49th parallel, except for the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The treaty was signed in 1846.

Acquisition of California proved far more difficult. Polk sent an envoy to offer Mexico up to $20,000,000, plus settlement of damage claims owed to Americans, in return for California and the New Mexico country. Since no Mexican leader could cede half his country and still stay in power, Polk's envoy was not received. To bring pressure, Polk sent Gen. Zachary Taylor to the disputed area on the Rio Grande.

To Mexican troops this was aggression, and they attacked Taylor's forces.

Congress declared war and, despite much Northern opposition, supported the military operations. American forces won repeated victories and occupied Mexico City. Finally, in 1848, Mexico ceded New Mexico and California in return for $15,000,000 and American assumption of the damage claims.

President Polk added a vast area to the United States, but its acquisition precipitated a bitter quarrel between the North and the South over expansion of slavery.

Polk, leaving office with his health undermined from hard work, died in June 1849.

Though I started voting for Frances due to Hrothgar's influence - she is actually a pretty good choice for top "First Lady"

She was born in Buffalo, New York, only child of Emma C. Harmon and Oscar Folsom--who became a law partner of Cleveland's. As a devoted family friend Cleveland bought "Frank" her first baby carriage. As administrator of the Folsom estate after his partner's death, though never her legal guardian, he guided her education with sound advice. When she entered Wells College, he asked Mrs. Folsom's permission to correspond with her, and he kept her room bright with flowers. Though Frank and her mother missed his inauguration in 1885, they visited him at the White House that spring. There affection turned into romance--despite 27 years' difference in age--and there the wedding took place on June 2, 1886.

Cleveland's scholarly sister (Rose Elizabeth Cleveland) her bachelor brother's hostess in 15 months of his first term of office gladly gave up the duties of hostess for her own career in education; and with a bride as First Lady, state entertainments took on a new interest. Mrs. Cleveland's unaffected charm won her immediate popularity. She held two receptions a week--one on Saturday afternoons, when women with jobs were free to come.

After the President's defeat in 1888, the Clevelands lived in New York City, where baby Ruth was born. With his unprecedented re-election, the First Lady returned to the White House as if she had been gone but a day. Through the political storms of this term she always kept her place in public favor. People took keen interest in the birth of Esther at the mansion in 1893, and of Marion in 1895. When the family left the White House, Mrs. Cleveland had become one of the most popular women ever to serve as hostess for the nation

Fillmore had nothing to do with the Dred Scott decision. The Supreme court is independent of the President. The only way a President influences the Surpeme court is their role in nominating judges to fill vacancies. The Dred Scott decision interpreted the Constitution to allow an act like the Fugitive Slave law to be enacted.

Yes, Millard Fillmore carved a political career out of the petty fears and predjudices of his time. his first association was with the Anti-Masonic party, and his only run for the White House was with the American/Know Nothing party, who were pretty much against immigrants and Catholics.

In the light of today's attitudes about race, gender and ethnicity, few eighteenth or nineteenth century men stand up to close scrutiny. Even Mr Lincoln was a believer in the white supemist theories of his day. He just ddn't believe that theory supported the institutution of slavery.

James K. Polk was the hand-picked protege of Andrew Jackson to recapture the White House from the Whigs. Those Whigs had used Jackson's "log cabin" and "hard cider" approach to toss out Martin Van Buren, Jackson's previous protege, in favor of the ill-fated William Henry Harrison.

Polk used jingoistic expansionism concepts like, "Manifest Destiny" and "Fifty-four Forty or Fight" as the slogans to sweep himself into the White House. Britain compromised with Polk's territorial demands and we got Oregon.

Mexico did not capitulate, so we declared war on Mexico and took Texas and California as our prize. The Mexican war was not nation building. It was a land grab, which happened to make Texas safe for slaveowners.

Mexico had already prohibited slavery.

As our standards continue to change, many of our heroes lose their luster. We can choose to honor our past, or live in growing shame of our common heritage.

God bless Millard Fillmore, his friends, and his foes. They, like us were men of their times.

Some future standard will find us all lacking.

A summary of todays events in this great political race:

Frances Cleveland continues to gain popularity - Polk has surpassed Ford - George Washington continues to gain on Ronald Reagan and Clinton.

Jame Buchanan continues in last place.

Still no reults in on the pet popularity contest - a rumour has it the silkworms of John Quincy Adams will be pooling their votes for a landslide sweep of the polls.

I've been voting for Fillmore, Washingto and smetimes Madison or whoever is at the bottom of the list.

And of course, Frances

In the early years of the twenty-first century - a slightly eccentric man decided to encourage his fellows to vote for the Presidential Action figure most desired. And he called these fellows the "Iron Voters"...

whoops! - wrong flashback...

anyway - by my calculations with just a hair over 1900 votes we could have all 18 candidates currently BELOW Dubya ABOVE Dubya.

Well thanks Spaw.

It's fun and it's something that fits with my lifestyle. I'm online nearly the entire day from 10am to 2am. I work most afternoons in another office and don't typically use the Internet there and don't vote from there.

I work from home the rest of the day - managing websites, doing research and communicating with people so I'm online nearly all the time. I have a set up which reminds me about every 15 minutes or so to go and vote. Netscape Navigator has tabs so I can go back and forth. I don't vote every 15 minutes because I'm busy working too, but I've been averaging about 15 votes a day.

It's fun - and it's allowed me to learn about the presidents. Plus - just think about it, they may never know that we're doing this and some day they may have a Fillmore doll - all because of us. I sure as heck will buy one!

Do you all realize that Fillmore is ranked #4 in first place votes? And I've been voting for him in the 2nd or 3rd spot for quite a while now to sort of even it out (and hopefully make the company think that he has a broad level of supportamong hundreds of people - not just a few freaks).

And Vote for Madison he's close to passing "our current pretender."

They ALL lied about that one! It was equivalent to rolling an old drunk with his pockets full of valuable possessions (like Cuba, the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, etc...). Spain had no chance whatsoever in that war of national convenience. America even had "Butcher Wyler"...the Saddam of his day...with which to infuriate the righteous masses stateside. (He was the commanding Spanish general in Cuba, known for his ruthless counter-insurgencey efforts against the Cuban rebels...who were slowly winning anyway.)

Okay, I'm off to vote again for Millard!

Richard Nixon                659         834         774         2267
Franklin D. Roosevelt         495         610         1088         2193

Put FDR over Nixon!

Theodore Roosevelt         517         686         787         1990
Millard Fillmore         925         296         220         1441

The obvious one! Only 550 to go to pass Teddy.

George W. Bush         190         95         69         354
James Polk                  74         117         107         298

I don't care for Polk (although there's a fine county in Florida named after him), but let's put him pass Dumbya.

Gerald Ford         34         84         131         249
Herbert Hoover         86         62         81         229
Chester Arthur         43         67         107         217

And vote for Arthur - soon to pass Hoover And not that Ford was all that bad, but he pardoned Nixon!

Exactly. That is the political method. They also tell them really negative stuff about the opposing candidates, and they usually promise to lower your taxes or at least not raise them. Ha! How can a society that is overloading the natural environment and enlarging its greedy grasp on reality with every fiscal year and growing LARGER all the time POSSIBLY cut taxes?

Answer: It can't. One way or another the cost of such a society keeps going up. I refuse to vote for anyone who promises to cut my taxes, because I know a blatant lie when I hear it. They'll cut in one place, raise in another. They'll privatize public services, and those services will go to the private sector which will then do a worse job and charge you more for it. Lots more! After all, they want to make a profit, don't they? Duh. Where is their profit going to come from? From you, sucker!

The way to get ahead in life financially is to cut your own frivolous personal spending...but that would require a little restraint and maturity, wouldn't it? Naw...people would rather vote for some liar who says he's going to lower their taxes than be realistic themselves and lower their own spending.

A vote for Fillard Millmore will do nothing to alter any of the above, but it will certainly confuse the toy company... :-)

A vote for Fillmore is a vote for . . . Willmore. It doesn't get ANY CLEARER than that. We could be altering the course of world history . . . .

The year is 2048. The world is a shattered ruin. Liebowitz finds a doll. It is . . . YES, you guessed it, Millard Fillmore. Enscribed on the doll is a small plaque that reads, "Most popular President of the United States of America."

In the corner is a malodorous fellow who contents himself watching reruns of Nascar programs. He is alone, because no one wants to sit near him. He has a lower sphincter that no longer operates as a one-way valve. It is the sound of air rushing in followed by the squealing of air rushing out that drives folks away from him. He is a man with no name. History, in its manner, has forgotten that he led the campaign to have Fillmore achieve greatness. All folks knew was that June 8 held a special place in his heart.

Yeah. This whole thing that started as the sick suggestion of a guy who has a tenuous grasp on sanity could very well change the course of human events.

I can't believe I just wrote this shit. Nor can I believe I am posting it. Here's to Dillard Millfore, President par excellence.

Theodore Roosevelt         527         695         810         2032
Millard Fillmore         942         309         261         1512

Last time I listed it was:

Roosevelt: 1998
Fillmore: 1474

Checking the numbers, we've only put Fillmore 4 votes closer to Teddy overall. That's basically 34 votes that didn't count. A pretty crappy result. Maybe people are doing it as a joke - I dunno, I dunno.

Here's the tally

George Washington         1653         1909         1547         5109
Ronald Reagan                2783         1262         1059         5104

William J. Clinton         3505         545         711         4761
Thomas Jefferson         640         1949         1558         4147
Abraham Lincoln         550         1065         1146         2761

Richard Nixon                860         894         826         2580
John F. Kennedy         482         979         1061         2522

Theodore Roosevelt         746         851         840         2437
Franklin D. Roosevelt         544         652         1120         2316
Millard Fillmore         1521         390         316         2227

I've been voting for Fillmore, Washington and Kennedy. Got to keep Washington on top. I know that voting for Kennedy sort of infringes on Fillmore, but I want both of them on top of Nixon. It shows you just how screwed up some Republicans are - voting for a man who resigned in shame from being president.

I compared the presidents who are still ahead of our boy Millard and found that all but one are currently available or in production. That leaves only FDR as the one to beat to get Fillmore into production. Just think of it! A mere 76 votes will do that! Getting him on top of all of them would be fantastic, but getting him produced will be a victory also.

God, what a lunatic bunch we are! Isn't this fun?

How about a few more votes????

The group over at SPEED has kept the voting for Millard going and we are now in sixth place....believe it or not!!!!!!

Passing Tricky Dick is now only 50 or so votes away and that puts us waaaaay up there. The next jump becomes pretty big but taking fifth is not too far away. How about a little extra help from here where so many have voted in the past? We'll be passing 300 votes in just a very few votes and that in itself is a milestone. Vote Milly in the 1 spot and your coice for slots 2 and 3. Try to vote for Abby Fillmore for first lady if you would???? C'mon Gang....One more push!!!!

I wonder what a tallking Millard Fillmore doll would say, anyway. I wonder if, since nobody probably remembers what the old dude sounded like, you could maybe have him sing the hamster-dance song.

It is true, Mario, that our original intention was to produce action figures of all the Presidents of this great nation. However, we wanted to respond in a proper procedural fashion to the genuine desires of the American public and produce those figures according to popular demand, in a sequence that would be proportionate to that popular demand. What we have here is a conspiracy by a bunch of morons who have decided to stack the deck and vote for Millard Fillmore over and over again not because they actually believe he was a great President, but merely in order to play a pointless practical joke which lampoons our great traditions! This cannot be allowed to continue.

We are going to smoke out these scoundrels and put a stop to their shenanigans.

I think shennanigans has an extra "n". Maybe not. But isn't that the name of the South Park ritual during which culprits are beaten with brooms?

Anyway, as I see it, the real problem here is that you idiots are only voting 1st place for Millard. Had you voted him in all 3 slots, he would be winning.

And all you UKers and Canadians. You finally have a chance to voice your opinion in a US election and what do you do? Sit back and watch! Not acceptable. Vote now and vote often.

a vile calumny!

READ the thread. A great deal of information has been posted explaining WHY it would be a good thing to promote Millard.

Talk about stacking the deck - what about the 1000 plus votesz that came in the weekend of Reagan's death? That was entirely media driven!

They've changed the voting! We can no longer vote for presidents who's dolls the company already makes. They haven't changed the results to George Washington is effectively on top of Reagan forever. I wish I could have gotten Lincoln over Nixon though.

Keep voting for Fillmore though. It's just gotten a bit easier sicne Clinton, Reagan and Washington cannot be added to.

hey SPAW! need a ruling here...

technically Millard is now #1 of those who can be voted for - do we bring him up through the non-votable ranks - or do we switch to re-arranging the list according to random whim voter preference?

Subject: RE: BS: NEED HELP--Vote for Millard Fillmore

I don't think he gets to be in the nonvotable ranks unless they decide to produce an action figure of him. They would have to be very stupid to make that decision. :-) Hardly anyone would buy it, and tooling is expensive. This means that Millard Fillmore may eventually attain unheard-of voting totals if people keep voting for him! He could theoretically reach 10,000 votes! He could achieve notoriety for NOT having been released as an action figure, despite getting the most votes.

What will they do? The World waits with bated breath!

Well then, they are definitely not very bright. Why does that not surprise me? Man, I can see it, years from now...warehouses full to the rafters with millions of unsold little Millard Fillmores sitting sadly in their little packages!

That never happened with the James T. Kirk action figures. They sold out. If you can get hold of #0000001 James T. Kirk Action Figure, First Edition, you could sell it on Ebay for enough to buy an island in Tahiti.

A Millard Fillmore won't be worth the plastic it took to make it.

I'd buy a Millard Fillmore doll just so I could feel what it was like to own a President, just like those of the military-industrial complex. Of course, I'd like to add a few of my own additions to his vocabulary, but then, I wouldn't have to wonder what Millard Fillmore would say......so it would probably spoil the fun.

In the past month, Millard has moved past Thomas Jefferson to fourth place in the overall standings and is NUMBER ONE in first place votes. He only needs about 40 votes to pass Clinton in the overall standings.

www.toypresidents.com removed the names of the existing dolls from the voting list so that Reagan, Clinton, Dubya, TR, Lincoln and Kennedy, can no longer garner any more votes. First place overall is well within our grasp. Then Spaw and I can surely have a 12 inch Millard to dress in our daughter's Barbie clothes.

They are up for funding from American Express. VOTE! The Adventure is planned to be a travelling museum of nautical lore, law, music, whatever,

Millard would vote if he could.
Here's the link:

There are two threads on this one above and one below the line. SEARCH "shantyman" and you will find it.

VOTE and VOTE often.
