People who can't be bothered to spell properly, or write intelligent posts, or contribute musically. People whose only interest in being here is to stir up trouble. The trolls, in other words. John from Hull, as a prime example...

That other Guest, noddy! The one who spells his name the same as mine, but he doesn't capitalize the "N". He has no business coming here. He is superfluous! I am the one and only Noddy who should be here on this forum.

And then there's Grab! That fellow's membername sums up his entire nasty existence in one ugly syllable. Like Martin said, Grab: "Grab this!"

And then there's Clinton H...the guy who is too smart to still be hanging around here, but he doesn't leave! He'd rather stay around and TELL us that he is too smart to be hanging around here. Is he a masochist or a sadist? I think it's the latter.

None of the above--it pisses when people call one or another sort of music "crap" because it doesn't correspond to their particular taste--and when someone is trying to figure out how to play something in a certain technique and style, others are trying to help, and some jerk-off pops in with "all this is bullshit, just play it"--or "there is no right or wrong way to do this"--

I am beginning to suspect that Martin Gibson is Clinton Hammond. It works this way: Like Doctor Jeckl and Mister Hyde, Clinton Hammond periodically undergoes a horrific personality change where he metamorphs from his normally snide and unpleasantly opinionated self into something far more chaotic and terrifying...Martin Gibson! Martin Gibson is Clinton Hammond without even a shred of self-control or human decency left. I think it happens every time Clinton has his second bottle of Guinness. That's my theory.

Me

I get really pissed off with myself when I:

  • make judgements about people that I've never met

  • jump to conclusions about what these people mean

  • reply in haste

  • fail to make my point clearly enough

  • mess up my punctuation, spelling or links

  • post utter crap after too many beers

  • There really is no contest.

Even I admit that I don't really exist.

The thing is, "Martin Gibson" does exist--he is more "real" in cyberspace than the person who created him--and the person who created him doesn't realize that "Martin Gibson" has already taken over his "real" life in subtle ways--

If you don't believe me, "Creator-of-Martin", think about how much of your real life you give up to "Martin Gibson" every time you write a post, and then come back later to see how people responded to it-

You have already said that "he" isn't you, and that you walk away to be a very differerent sort of person in your "real" life, but the fact is, you keep coming back to be him, again and again--

The person who calls himself "Martin Gibson" probably sees himself as some sort of secret identity superhero. The chances are that, in the 3D world, he appears and acts normal. Maybe people even think he's a nice guy. He probably thinks he's a nice guy. But then—like the seizures that assail David Banner just before he turns into The Hulk—the person who becomes "Martin Gibson" ducks into the closet and puts on his form-fitting Lycra spandex body stocking (form-fitting—oh God, what a horrible thought! I can't look!), his mask, and his cape, then comes out, goes to his computer, and accesses Mudcat. There, he becomes the person we've all learned to love so much as he Hulks it up.

He thinks that, as "Martin Gibson," he's only a made-up persona, and that "Martin Gibson" doesn't really exist in the real world. That's not who he—the 3D person who becomes "Martin Gibson" really is. In fact, several times he has said as much.

AHA! BUT—you can't really separate the various aspects of what you do and what you are unless you're either schizophrenic or have multiple personality disorder. Every individual is the totality of all the personalities he or she assumes. When "Martin Gibson" leaves the computer, goes back into the closet, changes out of his costume, and assumes his 3D identity (what he likes to think of as the "real" him), he is still the same person. Whoever "Martin Gibson" is in the 3D world, whether he thinks so or not, whether he likes it or not, he IS Martin Gibson.

He probably really wanted to become Fartman, but Howard Stern beat him to it.

Some people deal with cyberspace as if it wasn't part of the real world--the apparent anonymity confuses people into thinking that they aren't being observed, so their actions have no "real world" consequences--many have found out the hard way that it isn't true--

Martin, you are so right! It's up to them. And that is the key to self-mastery right there. Talking and sometimes wrangling with people of many vastly different beliefs for the last 3 years on Mudcat Cafe has had an enormous effect in helping to teach me how not to give my power away pointlessly to other people by letting them push my buttons any old time they don't see something my way. I have learned to have more equanimity and good humour in the process. For that alone it's been worth it.

I think there's plenty of method in your particular brand of "madness".

Perhaps, Little Hawk. But the old WASPs here with their devout and totally hypocritical political correctness are by far my favorite target.

As I have said, that clique is the one that looks down their noses at many in their pseudo-sophisticated manner. They are about as fun as diarhrea at a party and to me never enlightening.

do you really think calling me "buster" can possibly upset me? It's about as lame as a man with 2 broken legs.

You have to be tough to live in Chicago, tough to work in the corporate world, tough to make life work to your advantage in general. These little old men in front of their keyboards, plotting and seething very seldom really push my buttons. My posts are purely impromptu to them. They squirm like little girls that have a worm dangled in front of them. I really don't mean them any harm, but I will always push back when pushed at and expose their brand of complete bullshit. For me, it's as I have been saying all along, just entertainment.

As for being Martin Gibson, I would rather be him here. If we don't have other lives than what goes on here, then I would say, I would not want to be one so pathetic.

I'm with GUEST, catter up there.

There are ratbags in every forum, every community, office, family... everywhere. Some attempt to piss everyone off with such dedication that it seems desperate. We have these here. My guess is that they can succeed in little else, interpersonally, and at least they get noticed when they act like assholes. The desperation, however, is just too blatant for me to take them seriously.

Other folks, who come down to some nasty level to play, bother me more. I guess it's just that the threatening, rude, easily goaded, egotistical, whatever, plonker, was always lurking behind the public 'face'. Those qualities lurk behind most of our masks, in varying degrees. What I can't figure out is what makes people, who obviously CAN be nice, decide they can justify (to themselves) letting their 'inner asshole' come out and hurt people. I suppose what bothers me more than them just showing who they really are is the realisation that I'd misjudged them.

    AHA, Doug!

We may not see eye to eye on things political, but when comes to wines, we are in complete agreement! My wife, Barbara, who often haunts our local Trader Joe's (actual, they have several stores in Seattle), discovered Charles Shaw wines and we've been buying it ever since, both for our own enjoyment and for when we entertain. Here's a pretty informative web site about it (BLICKY). I lift a glass and drink to your health.

Well, well, well. Judging from the posts above, Marty, you seem to be the primary off-pisser around here.

    Commercial offering possible therapy follows:

Follow Doug's recommendation and give Charles Shaw wines a try, Marty. They're sold exclusively at Trader Joe's, but there are Trader Joe's stores in Chicago. They are excellent, and startlingly inexpensive, considering how good they are. Apparently there is nothing about them that is inconsistent with kosher laws, because I have a number of Jewish friends and acquaintances (sophisticated, well-educated, and cosmopolitan, all) who are also very fond of them. One friend (who hosted frequent song-fests in his home for years and, although he is gone now, his wife continues to do so) said once that he will not have Mogen David in the house. He told me that he drank it when he was younger and didn't know any better. According to him, it tastes like grape flavored syrup.

Now, don't say that Doug and I never did anything for you, Marty. Enjoy. Mellow out a little.

So "Martin Gibson" presents as a middle-aged Jewish man living in Chicago, who might be expected to have heard the story of the Golem at some time. But for all we know the real person could be, for example, a Presbyterian granny living in Billericay, who very likely wouldn't have...

Sweet wine!?? Fruity in nose and flavor, yes, but sweet??

Yeah, Doug, I don't think I've had a drink of hard liquor for years (other than a dram of Drambuie from time to time, and an occasional beer on a hot afternoon, which is nowhere near hard liquor). Barbara and I have a glass from the stock of Charles Shaw that we keep on hand maybe two or three times a week with dinner and, of course, when we have guests. A moderate amount of red wine is supposed to Roto-Rooter the plaque out of one's veins and arteries. At last!! Something you enjoy that's actually good for you!

But remember "Martin Gibson" is a fictitious character, who has only been in existence since December 2002. So that kind of playground stuff is pretty advanced for someone of that age, even if he'd hardly qualify as being a "good insulter".

McGrath, what is your definition of a good insulter? what qualifies to you?

One essential for a "good insulter" would be the ability to nose out some characteristic of the person being insulted, preferably one about which they feel a bit insecure, and use that as the basis for the insult, rather than just throwing out random off-the-shelf abuse. If an insult isn't in some way accurate, it's got no real force.

So, for exmple, to get back to the playground, there'd be no sense in calling someone who didn't wear glasses "old four-eyes".

Being a "good insulter" isn't something of which I'd pride myself.

The problem is that there are some people (and I use that term with reservations) who hide behind anonymity, or an equally anonymous "handle," and say things that, were they to make such remarks to someone in person, the next thing they'd be doing is crawling around on the floor looking for their teeth.

That kind of anonymity brings out the true nature of some people (once again, the term with reservations):   foul-minded, foul-mouthed bullies who are much too cowardly to face the consequences of their utterances, so they make them anonymously in places like this. It's obvious that these—well—people (although I really hesitate to classify them has human beings) have managed to find their level. Right about crotch height.

The Mudcat seems to have become infested lately with some particularly nasty parasites.

It is rather frustrating tryng to follow what could be an interesting discussion only to have it spoilt by this type of thing.

Believe it or not, I do draw the line. Using a fake name or a handle seems to be what most do here. I would never use my real name in this or in any forum as Don Firth does. Good or bad, why would anyone want to expose their real self to the world as someone who even remotely associates with all of this quirkiness.

Don, I've not done it, but wouldn't it make you feel weird if someone did a Google or Yahoo search on your name and it took someone here to Mudcat or wherever else you post and everyone saw all of YOUR very real self co-habitating with many usual Internet varmints?

Marty, it doesn't worry me to use my real name because, unlike some others, I don't post anything that I would be ashamed of.

And as far as anyone looking me up is concern, it happened just a few weeks ago. An old friend did a google search on my name and found me here on Mudcat. He registered as a member here solely to use the PM facility and sent me a PM with his e-mail address. I e-mailed him and we got together for the first time since 1985. He's a former guitar student of mine and a very good friend.

Perhaps I'm gullible and foolhardy, but I can't see any reason why anyone would want to do me any harm. And if it were to ever happen, I'm perfectly capable of protecting myself.

In fact, Marty, although you say you find my writing boring, it seems that there are others who don't. A few people have read things I've posted here and apparently liked what they read because they offered me opportunities to write for print publications they're associated with. I have over a dozen magazine articles published. Some for pay.

So you see, there are certain advantages to using one's real name. And, of course, to writing things that you're not ashamed of.

Also, I don't at all mind "co-habitating" (don't you mean "cohabiting"?) with the "usual Internet varmints" who frequent Mudcat. With the exception of a few "varmints" (variant of the word "vermin"), I find most Mudcat habitués to be interesting, knowledgeable, informative, and friendly. Not only that, where else could I converse with people all over the world? Amos in San Diego, McGrath in England, Wolfgang in Germany, CarolC in Alabama, DougR in Arizona, Bobert in West Virginia, Foolestroupe in Australia, etc. Even converse a bit with Jean Ritchie and old friend from decades ago, Sandy Paton. Rather than a collection of "varmints," I find Mudcat to be one of the real miracles that modern technology makes possible.

You know, Marty, I think there is a remote possibility that you might actually have something to offer if you ever gave yourself permission. And if it's really true that you're "fed up with the things people say about me" and "I do not mean most of the things I say here so please start being nice to me," then there is a very easy way of bringing that about. If it's really true, that is, and you're not just trying to jerk people around. Wouldn't it be nice if people actually liked you and valued your comments and opinions? All you need to do is stop acting like a pubescent barbarian who has recently discovered his and other people's crotches and start acting like a mature, happy human being that you claim to be "in real life."

    It's that simple.

there are people here who like what I write also. Have more friends than you or many could ever realize. Some of them encourage me to say things to you and I don't really always mind being their mouthpiece. I respond to plenty of PMs from my friends here all of the time.

Some have found my pull no punches, total lack of political correctness quite refreshing and I hear it all of the time. Others I know feel that some of the old guard psuedo intellectuals have gone stale and really are quite boring and full of themselves amongst other types of fecal matter.

So Don, I'm in it for the long haul to keep in check just how off the wall that the world could be, to show that polital correctness is out of control, and to continue with another angle on life. One that could give you sometimes a nice dose of what life in the big city is like.

    Thanks, Fred!

I would also rather talk about favorite mudcatters than people who piss me off. But on the other hand, some of my favorite mudcatters often DO piss me off, like DougR. And Martin Gibson himself.   I mean, who could not be amused by some of MG's comments, and pissed off by others?

By the way, as to whether Martin Gibson is "Real" or not, there's a classic of sociology by Erving Goffman, called "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life." His essential argument is that we are all acting roles most of the time. The version of us that most other people see is not the "real" us or the "complete" us, but a role. Martin Gibson is one of the roles acted by his creator. He is not "completely unreal" (whatever that may mean), but he is only a projection, a role, being acted by his creator.

Certain things MG certainly has in common with his creator. I believe the creator of MG is really Jewish, for example, from sentences like

Don, what I forgot, you haven't even imagined.

But of course, it's possible that MG is just a very well-created role.

In either case, I long ago decided that MG just says what he says to be funny and yank our chains, and since then he's gone from being someone who pissed me off to one of my favorite mudcatters--because it's usually amusing to read a thread he's in!

Other favorites: Bobert, Fred Miller, Wolfgang (who keeps both sides honest on the political threads), Sandy Paton, Kytrad, and the late lamented Rick Fielding, among others.

'Catters who piss me off? Life's too short

(er, that's too short to be pissed off, not too short to list the 'Catters who piss me off!)

I wouldn't put it in quite those terms, but Martin is being sensible. The point you could draw from Goffman is that there is no sense wondering if you're just seeing a projection: you are. You are ALWAYS seeing a projection, not "the real person," even if you're talking in real life, let alone on the internet. Furthermore, I would say this has to be a dialogic performance. It's even more true on the internet (which did not exist in Goffman's day) because you experience so much less: no facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, quality of voice, etc. So all you see are words made up by a person. Well Gs, I like some of Martin's posts when he has something to say, but don't enjoy his routine postings(I KNOW, Martin, You don't care, don't give a whatever, yes, I get it, done got it, am watching re-runs, thanks).
Except I always do enjoy the part of the routine where he tells people he doesn't care what they think of his routine, online persona, manners, style, humor, whatever. I think I like it because it's a question he keeps answering that nobody keeps asking him.
When you or I ask a question like you have, correct me if I'm wrong, we are not asking Martin, or "Martin" whether he cares what we think, or even really addressing him at all. Why would we? It's more like an open question to absolutely anyone else--even anonymous guests--and addressing a dismal, recurring phenomenae, like say, We're getting some bleak weather here aren't we? One isn't asking the dull grey skies if they care what we think about them, or addressing the question to them.
That's why I enjoy the way Martin always and very predictably butts in right there to answer, always naively supposing anyone cares WHETHER he cares what we think. Different people find different things funny, that's the side of MG that amuses me. That, and his other, genuinely interesting posts, his take on folk music in general, and his musical knowledge and tastes.

well, Mr. Nerd, sir...you are, of course, technically correct. We see textual representations of some 'person'.....but some represent themselves in a pretty real approximation of what they are in reality.

I have MET a whole bunch of Mudcat folks RT, and it is my observation that those who are willing to be known RT are pretty much like their online personas. (there are several who are a 'bit' more bashful RT, and who actually express themselves better with time to think and type)

Now, it might be that Martin Gibson, aka ******** *. ************ in his supposed 'real' persona as a Jewish bluegrass musician from Chicago, is a well-liked and friendly fellow, but I sure wonder at the inner self that thinks it a great experiment and good fun to foment the amount of rancor he persists in spreading around this forum!

Everyone views these words on a screen a bit differently...some treat every 'persona' seriously, and *some* act as though none of these characters are really real, and assume their Don Rickles shtick of gratuitous insults is only a play-party game. They are so dead wrong it is scary! There are REAL people on the end of every post, whether you ever expect to meet them or not. It IS possible to do real damage with insults and put-downs, and no amount of laughing & shrugging is going to change that.

"Martin Gibson" is clever, bright, fast with the quip and has a thick skin....but I suspect that he is not a guy I'd care to be stranded with on a desert island.....not that he cares, anwyay...

    Good one, Blackcatter!

Goffman would answer BillD by saying that we have no way of knowing whether anyone on Mudcat is anything like the "real person," even if we know them outside of Mudcat. All we see are performative presentations of self, here or in the real world. All we would know for sure is that the person gives very consistent performances.

The part I really don't get is this:

Everyone views these words on a screen a bit differently...some treat every 'persona' seriously, and *some* act as though none of these characters are really real, and assume their Don Rickles shtick of gratuitous insults is only a play-party game. I could understand you saying it's wrong, but "so dead wrong it is scary?" It sounds as though you're saying there are people here so fragile that an insult from someone who is essentially a stranger is likely to have serious psychological consequences. This may be the case, but such a person is an accident waiting to happen and should probably stay away from anonymous internet forums!

Nerd- if it is difficult to tell what really lies behind each screen persona, it is equally difficult to imagine how the 'banter' affects some of them who are trying to learn to find their way in the online forum world. Saying that fragile people should avoid this world is a cop-out...it's like saying that fair-skinned people should avoid going outside when the sun is shining. To operate in this new system, sometimes they have little choice.

Or...maybe a better example...when students are teased, hassled and otherwise bothered by school bullies, the usual reply of the bully, is "awww...I was just havin' a little fun. He needs to learn to take it, or get some backbone..."...various forms of that....

Why is the answer NOT that "bullies need to be re-educated and reigned in" ?

Why are some posters here totally open about who and where they really are? (You could find out who Bill D is in 2 minutes of searching and drive right to my fron door....but I don't think I have ever seen anything which tells me ANY details about Nerd. I know it is intelligent and can spell and usually has reasonable things to say...but I am not even sure about gender) Is this important?...No, as Nerd doesn't seem to cause the polarization that some here do.

This internet business is pretty new in the human experience. Many of our ways of communicating are being altered more rapidly than our psyches find comfortable...and some adapt more slowly, and 'maybe' some shouldn't try online forums at all....and perhaps some are borderline. That's what bell-shaped curves are about! I STILL see no need to make the online experience akin to a college fraternity hazing ritual, as Martin Gibson seems to take delight in. In many ways, he is a bigger problem than old .gargoyle, who gets so weird that it becomes a joke. Marin Gibson does not sound like he is joking, and if his 'projection' is merely an elaborate put-on, pardon me if I don't laugh at its wit.

Like I say....I tend to aim towards MEETING as many nice people thru Mudcat as possible and enjoying music & talk with them...but I have my reservations about some.

oh...and by the way....I try VERY hard to add little bits to my posts to make my 'projection' as clear as possible. *grins* and emphasis and pauses and OTHER forms of emphasis are my feeble attempt to sound like I am talking. Smiley faces are used by some for the same purpose. ;>), but they are limited, and not even understood by everyone. I would prefer that everyone have a camera so that facial expressions could be added to the information during a discussion like this...and even an audio connection for certain times....and with technology, it is, of course possible, though not yet 'easy'....

    one old farts opinion...

What really bothers me is when a guest starts a thread and asks a perfectly reasonable question (even if it is one answered 1000 times here before) and the first response is a nasty thing, usually posted by another "GUEST" who is some idiot trying to be funny (I assume, but could be wrong).

It is one thing to be "funny," "combative," whatever in the BS realm as well as in a music thead once the person has been helped to some extent, but it really gives the Mudcat a bad reputation when innocent people come here looking for help and get grief.

I got into a fight with an idiot a few months back who did that and he/she followed me around to all the threads and tried to slam me all the time, because I told him/her to f-off after posting a mean response to a perfectly good question by a "newbie." I also thied to answer the question and tell the newbie we're not all like the idiot.

The other thing that bothers me is those new to Mudcat who make themselves at home so quickly. This is my problem, not theirs, of course and honestly is part of why Georgiansilver irks me. It probably took me 6 or more months of membership before I started a thread (nearly 5 years ago), yet GS has started a few having only been a mmeber for a few mnths. Like I said, that's my problem but it's not the only thing that frustrates me about him (sorrry to speak like you're not here GS).

It's an interesting thing you mention, Nerd. One could find my house, and my name is blandly just my name. But even Vladimir Nabokov who required all interview questions submitted in writing, and proofed the galleys of his replies, and always spoke of his persona an invention and an illusion, and was utterly aloof from public opinion in virtually all matters--even he hoped he achieved some sort of agreeable effect.

I don't object to insult and vulgarity, per se, it's just not as reliably funny as it was when I was say, nine. And it does derail some fun threads, and maybe kills one every now and then. I don't quite blame MG. His posts would be much more fun if followed by different sorts of replies, or sometimes none at all, by less consternated curliques and repeats, all turning out the same. at least to my taste.

It's true I did once have a thread about my kids' band that Martin started noodling with, throwing in blowjob jokes and whatnot. But the thing that bothered me is I had read the same joke in other posts of his twice before, that week. If you want to play around, well, what? Are your writers on strike? Do you know so few jokes that a thread about 8 yr olds seems right for the bj one-liner? Whether Martin cares or not, he's usually a lame-ass wit, and I'm as entitled to say so as he is to be one. I didn't mind it much, and it was all right, but I guess some people might. Still, the coolness of this open forum is priceless--let offended people go to guitarnotes or somewhere with it's churchy moderated forums, sit in their seats, face straight ahead.

Anyway, it's the interactions that often make a thread a fun and interesting event, not any one voice, or we could all just blog our own individual threads and follow our favorites.

I get what you're saying, BillD. I wasn't so much saying that people shouldn't be nicer, so much as saying it's unlikely they will be. Your analogy of the fair-skinned people is actually a good one: Fair-skinned people shouldn't go out in the sun, and if they do then it is up to them to protect themselves, because the sun isn't going to cool down for them. You can say anything you want about MG, he is a force of nature like the sun, consistent and thick-skinned. He isn't going to change just because people get mad at him.

Perhaps being a native New Yorker has had an effect on me: sure, in a perfect world the muggers wouldn't be there, but seeing as they ARE there I had to be responsible for my safety growing up. Sometimes I got mugged. I didn't think it was MY fault, but I simply had to take what I got. I had no choice if I wanted to live my life.

By the way, if you looked through all my posts, you'd find a lot that might identify me: I'm a folklorist, native New Yorker, now live in Philadelphia, have a wife (and thus am probably a man--in fact, I'll tell you now that I am) etc. So I'm not completely hiding. But there are many things you won't find out, including probably my name (though I have PMd it to a few people, so they could always spill the beans).

But as you know, you can't be SURE I'm telling the truth. Maybe I'm a little old lady in Leningrad making Nerd up! Anyway, it's kind of a fun little game, how much each of us chooses to reveal.

What you choose to reveal, and what you actually reveal are two different things--

On one hand, it seems as if cyberspace is a place where you have total control of what people know about you--however, as in the non-cyber world, the things that people notice are often things that you are totally unaware of--and, because nothing ever disappears in cyberspace, everything you've ever posted and everything that has ever been posted about you is there for anyone that cares to see it--often enough to put together a good picture--

well there's a difference between fun trouble, which I like as much as anyone, and nastiness. But we each are entitled to our own sense of which is which. When it isn't fun it would be a good idea to ignore it instead of drawing it out endlessly--why try to debate someone who's baiting you, except for sport? Even answering an annoyance is a wee bit fun, or vaguely satisfying, like swatting at a mosquito.

I presume this is directed at me, since I defended MG on this thread.

My real reson for enjoying MG is simply that I have a rather puerile sense of humor which I am too polite to let out very often. I admit it's my own hangup, but you're interpreting too much if you assume he has a "gang" or if anyone wants to be "in his gang." I personally am not afraid of anything and would welcome a tongue-lashing, provided it was funny. If MG merely said "fuck you" to me it would be disappointing (though even then it would not bother me), but if he somehow introduced rhinoceros semen into the equation (as he did on another thread) I'd be delighted.

Here's what I don't get: how can someone be seriously hurt/insulted by a guy they don't really know and who doesn't really know them? If my wife insults me, it hurts. If someone here insults me, it kinda rolls off, leaving only the humor of the insult behind. But we've been through this already...

Down here in the BS section, LH and Nerd have a point (sort of). But up in the music section, an intrusion into a serious music discussion by soneone who has no interest in discussing the subject of the thread, but is only looking to get their jollies at the expense of the others in the thread with puerile behavior and gutter language, is rude and in bad form. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular... just pointing out the fact that it does sometimes happen.

Yes, that's true, CarolC. It can get in the way of threads to which there is an actual purpose!

Oh, it's definitely rude and in bad form, all right, but there's still no use letting it mess up your head and put you in a bad mood. It's not like the person was invading your home, after all. You can just ignore them and continue enjoying yourself regardless. What can they do?

Someone needs to BRONZE this thread as a fine example of what Mudcat is really like!

It needs to be perma-threaded and all newbies should have to read it before they are allowed to post...

Think of the bandwidth this place WOULDN'T take up then....

Disillusioned guest--I enjoy a comparison that is overwhelmingly wrong. It's what I love about conservative pundits, and fondly remember from those golden Reagan years when he made us all feel good again by sheer force of sincere-sounding nonsense. So thanks for sharing. if you read what people have actually said, though, it's less like a bully's gang, more like people who extend some tolerance toward the stinky kid.

In defence of stinky kids everywhere, soap and water would not make MG smell any sweeter. A few sessions on a couch may do the trick.

Guest, please fuck yourself with an active blow torch. Or at least use a 2 day old burrito. Obviously you are the coward and have some big hang-ups.

    JacquiC are you:

    a) a nun
    b) a nun who owns a vibrator.
    c) a nun who owns a 2 way dildeaux (notice the correct French spelling)
    d) nun of the above, just a whiner, possibly a fundamentalist Christian from Nebraska.

To answer your query - nun of the above. I'm not even a Christian and I've never been to Nebraska.

Exactly, Little Hawk. No one can be a virtual bully unless you allow them to. Why would you?

I can only imagine that what Martin finds funny in his bit is how easy it is to mess with people--he seems to make a point never to try hard, never to be very sharp or interesting, in his routine. There are other posts when he is maybe just himself, has opinions, says things, but that's a different line.

I once had to review a couple of books of short-stories that were so awful I had trouble imagining they were written in any kind of earnest. It was a personal crisis in a weird way. I had to review them, I'd said I would, so I couldn't do the easy thing and ignore them. But as I dutifully plowed through them I began to imagine they were artfully contrived to be really terrible--they had to be. And I didn't know what to think of them, quite. Bad stuff can be as interesting as good stuff, in it's way. It's all the stuff in between that dulls our senses, makes us dull.

So, sincerely. Other mudcatters who piss me off are the ones who offer parroty-mediocre "observations" and never risk pissing anyone off by saying what they really think they think. Even those who we disagree with, violently, mean more to us than that. A bigot is better than a stealth-bigot, for example, I think. If your views make you sound wrong, it's still right to try to say them properly.

The problem with the Favourites thread is that it's hard to answer--you forget who all said what or whose name is which. I forgot Peg and McGrath and Bobert--although I have trouble with Bobert because I get drawn into his style but then can't do it, myself, I can't even bring myself to order a po'boy sandwich at the Hoka in Oxford MS so I have to order something other than what I really want--and John in Kansas who probably doesn't reciprocate it and others who I can't mention now because they've said nice things to me and so it's too late to bring it up.

This thread has gone a long ways without many real answers to the question, which is really a fair question to ask, I think, among grown-ups.

Glad you asked, John. William Shatner is Little Hawk's third cousin twice removed. He has had difficulty finding work lately, and L. H. has been trying to help him along to find ganefull employmement. Trouble is most of the outer-space jobs have been outsourced to India. That's why Shatner has been selling himself on motel commercials, and L. H. has been brushing up on his Indianese language.

Hope this clears things up for you.

He should send that hairpiece out to find work - it would probably stand a better chance. Maybe it could write a book - 'My Life Covering Shatner'.
